Judge's List
Judge's List | John Grisham
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer, and closes in on a shocking suspect--a sitting judge--in "one of the best crime reads of the year.... Bristling with high-tech detail and shivering with suspense.... Worth staying up all night to finish" (Wall Street Journal). In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate. She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later, and approaching forty, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change. Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby's father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims. Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law. He is a judge, in Florida--under Lacy's jurisdiction. He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list? The Judge's List is by any measure John Grisham's most surprising, chilling novel yet. Don't miss John Grisham's new book, THE EXCHANGE: AFTER THE FIRM, coming soon!

Second read of 2024 and I finished it in three days. This was a Christmas gift from my mom and I couldn't put it down. #booktwoof2024

I thought this was really good, a unique scenario. It got especially creepy once we started “following” from the judge‘s point of view about the middle of the book, but that, of course, ramped up the suspense a bit.

Wow, what a basis for a story! Grisham uses some of his characters from The Whistler. An anonymous complaint is filed with Lacy Stolz against the Honorable Bannick Ross for several murders that are cold cases in their various jurisdictions. He‘s been very clever and very careful.

I described this book as a "slow burn" until about page 200 where it progressively thawed into a bland piece of untenderized, raw chicken meat marinating in lukewarm water in a dirty sink. 3/10

Bren912 I totally giggled at this review 🫢 2y

A thriller about a smart, tech savvy sitting judge who is also a serial killer - patiently waiting years to murder those who have slighted, humiliated or harmed him. The premise is clever, but we neither get a legal showdown, nor is our heroine Lacy the one doing the investigating.
This one fell flat for me as the reader isn't along for the ride of piecing everything together nor in securing justice.

What can I say about John Grisham that hasn't already been said a hundred times over. He really is the master of the legal thriller and The Judge's List is just more evidence of that. His books always draw me in from the first few pages and leave me needing to read more.

A Grisham audiobook that‘s blowing me away and I want to read more about Lacy Stoltz! Halfway through and too bad I go to work soon…I‘d give it a 5 at this point~great characters and suspense.
I don‘t highlight or note, but I often do screenshots of words I want to remember

Perhaps it‘s because the lead is female in the often male dominant world of John Grisham books, but the Lacey Stoltz series has a different feel from Grisham‘s other legal thrillers. I liked it and hope there is more to come for Lacey.

lostinwords Thank you for this post and reminder of such a great writer. I haven‘t thought about reading any of his books since I read, The Client, many, many years ago. Maybe I‘ll have to read one. 3y
marleed @lostinwords Im in my third year of reading down the John Grisham collection in a haphazard publishing sequence. It‘s been fun and there is significant difference in his writing over the years - most notably the use of the N word. Except for 2 books gifted me by a sister, my JG collection is thrifted. That‘s a pile of fun because his books are easy to find out their in the wild! 3y

I‘m not a great fan but I heard him on the radio and thought I‘d give this a go. It was ok. I can see why he is popular.
I‘m going to read one more of his books. His only non fiction.
Not reading at my usual rate. Walking lots instead. I was thinking of listening to audio books but I like to think as I walk. A sort of meditation.

I love Grisham and this did not disappoint. The premise is this: A woman has spent 20 years investigating a man that is now a sitting judge. She believes that he has a hit list of people who wronged him in his life. How many murders will he get away with? Read and highly recommend.

Good plot, great pacing, intriguing mystery, Grisham is the best! Unfortunately the narration on the audiobook was horrible. 1.2x made us at least understandable, but she used the same voice for every character and lacked the necessary pauses between sections which made it very difficult to follow who was speaking.

Trying this on Audible, I‘ve never listened to an audiobook before! Disney bound!

mabell Have fun at Disney! 🏰🎉 You‘ve never tried an audiobook before? Enjoy! I love them! (But a lot depends on the narrator) 3y
BarkingMadRead @mabell we‘ve listened to most of it! The narrator is fine, not amazing but not bad, and once I figured out how to speed it up (thanks to something my daughter once told me, I knew it was possible) I was much happier. We have about an hour to go! 3y

I was riveted to this book until I finished it. My inquiring mind HAD to know what happened before darkness fell tonight. Jeri's father was murdered. She obsessively has spent 20 years tracking the person she suspects is the killer. She's positive she knows who it is, but she can't prove it. The killer is that smart. Finally she takes a chance, convinces someone to listen.
