Pickpick

How to you summarize a book that 1500+ p? Without spoiling anything? I went into this not knowing anything and I think that‘s a good idea.

One thing that‘s for sure, is that I won‘t look at a rake in the same way again. In romance novels/ movies that have this romantic air about them. After reading this, I know there‘s nothing romantic about them

And also, your true friends are the ones that stay with you in the hardest of times

AnneCecilie Of course this chi later was too long at times, but at the same time I don‘t think I have ever read about a character I have hated as much as I hated Mr Lovelace. Thank you for organizing and initiating this buddy read @Lcsmcat I‘m glad we set up the 50p a week read. I read this through Gutenberg and never had any idea of how far into the story I was and that worked for me. 13mo

#BookReport

I‘m still buddy reading Clarissa and we are no well into volume 6 of 9.

I‘ve just started a new buddy read, a chapter a day of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club

I‘m still reading Islands of Abandonment

I‘ve read The Enchanted April, volume 4 of Orange and Still Born

I‘m currently reading Blonde Roots

Cinfhen Do u watch the Tour de France??? Im very excited to watch this year!!! I watched a Netflix documentary and now I‘m hooked 😎🚴🏽‍♀️🚴🚴‍♂️🚵‍♀️🚵🚵‍♂️ 1y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen Yes, the part I was awake for. My afternoon nap was on the longer side. For the first time ever there‘s a Norwegian team participating. I haven‘t seen the documentary though. 1y
Cinfhen If you are able to watch Unchained on Netflix- it‘s so good! Israel has a team in the race this year too but I don‘t think they‘re expected to do much! I‘ll be looking out for the Norwegian team 😊 1y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen The Norwegian team is Uno X, their goal is to win one stage. I guess we‘ll find out if the do. They have Alexander Kristoff. Is the documentary on Netflix with previous cyclists or are there actors playing? 1y
Cinfhen The series was filmed last year during the 2022 race! Really good 😊 1y

Just bringing a little light reading to the roof deck for a sunset drink.

vivastory Those all look like 1,001 books 1y
Liz_M @vivastory The middle could be -- it's described as Joyce-like, but it's a Paraguayan novel I am reading for #FoodandLit. The other two are #1001Books 😊 1y
vivastory I've been curious about all 3 I hope they work for you! 1y

Amiable I'm reading “Clarissa“ on my e-reader so it's always startling to see just how giant it is in print! 1y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Has Liz ever told you how many of the 1001 she has read? She is absolutely killing that list! 1y
vivastory @BarbaraBB Isn't she almost finished? I felt proud of myself for having read 200 off the list lol 1y
Liz_M @Amiable I ended up buying it because in print it's easier to reference/look up the earlier letters which are mentioned in the footnotes. 😁 1y
Liz_M @BarbaraBB @vivastory I think I'm at 921 read. 😳 1y
BarbaraBB @vivastory @Liz_M That is incredible. You‘re almost there. Do you know of anyone having read more than you? I‘m at about 650 but I have slowed down enormously. I am more in the mood for contemporary literature lately 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1y
vivastory @BarbaraBB @liz_m I'm in awe of both of your numbers 📚📚📚 (edited) 1y

I got a little behind in my #clarissa reading by date, but I‘ll catch up by tomorrow. Struck by this quote - poor Clarissa, she seems to realize everyone‘s motives, but not be able to actually believe people can act that way. It‘s going to get her in trouble, I predict . . .

Lcsmcat I marked that quote too - and almost used it for this week‘s discussion. She seems doomed by her innocence, doesn‘t she? 2y
JenniferP @Lcsmcat she's definitely not stupid, she just seems to think that others will behave with her moral standards, and that is obviously not going to be the case! 2y

Reading #clarissa - each letter of the epistolary novel on the day it was written - for the first time.
This is the 1950 Modern Library edition. I collect the old MLs, because of course I do.

@Lcsmcat

LeahBergen I have this edition, too. It‘s abridged, isn‘t it? 2y
Tamra I‘m one of those weird people who usually like the smell of old books. 😜 2y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen It is abridged. I'm going back and forth between an unabridged ebook and the ML. Most of what was taken out seems to be Richardson's crazy long chapter/ letter summaries and his later "additions." Editorial choices are very interesting. 2y

Aimeesue @Tamra This one certainly does have that Olde Booke scent! I just love the old Modern Library editions. (edited) 2y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue Ah, that‘s interesting! 2y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I didn't think my arthritic wrists would be up to holding up an unabridged physical copy for a whole year. This seemed a suitable compromise. 😉 2y
LeahBergen Ha! These old wrists may be switching over to that edition, too. 😆 2y
Leftcoastzen I love them too! 2y
Aimeesue @Leftcoastzen They're the perfect size, and so well made! I get so excited when I find one that still has it's dust jacket 😂 2y
Lcsmcat I‘ve got the Modern Library edition too, but am reading from an unabridged eBook. I might have to join you in going back and forth. 2y
Aimeesue @Lcsmcat It'll be interesting to see what was cut! 2y

I'm pretty sure that I bought this #epistolary novel for the gorgeous pink of the old Modern Library cover. 😉 #ReadJanuary

LyndseyReads You are living right. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Have you read it? I've gone to start it a few times and have been daunted by its sheer enormity. 8y
RealLifeReading Pretty! 8y

LeahBergen @CherylDeFranceschi Not yet. This is a slightly abridged version (although still pretty big). I researched it after I bought this one and it seems like a Richardson scholar has pared the extraneous bits from it. (edited) 8y
CherylDeFranceschi So it's not just gorgeous, it's genius, too! 👏👏👏 8y
shawnmooney I have always been put off by the girth and what I assume would be old-fashioned prose. Let me know after you've read it. (edited) 8y
LeahBergen @shawnmooney The prose IS pretty old-fashioned (from the bits I've read). 8y
