In the sequel to New York Times bestselling A Curse So Dark and Lonely, Brigid Kemmerer returns to the world of Emberfall in a lush fantasy where friends become foes and love blooms in the darkest of places. Find the heir, win the crown. The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers. Win the crown, save the kingdom.Grey may be the heir, but he doesn't want anyone to know his secret. On the run since he destroyed Lilith, he has no desire to challenge Rhen--until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?

Although Grey is my favorite character and I loved having so much of his perspective in this book, I didn't enjoy this as much as book one. The pace felt like it was dragging a lot. I'm invested enough, though, that it's on to book 3 for me!

#serieslove2023 This sequel to the Beauty and the Beast retelling takes place after the curse is broken and the Prince is trying to rebuild and strengthen his failing Kingdom. This book doesn‘t focus on him anymore though. Instead it focuses on the other characters we met so the Beauty & the Beast aspect is gone but this new story was also really good! Lots of twists and magic, questions of loyalty and of course love. On to book 3! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I liked it. I went in knowing that this book was following different characters than the last, & I was ready for it because Rhen really Tamlin‘s up this whole thing. Looking forward to the next & how this will all come together!

I am behind on reviews because Litsy kept glitching on my phone and freezing every time I wanted to add an image!

I liked this book even more than the first one in the series, not only because of the greater focus on Grey (who I thought was the most interesting character), but also because Kemmerer was less constrained to fit the story into the Beauty and the Beast tropes. This one does have a Rapunzel bit, but it's more organic to the story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ ◼️ As much as I loved the first one…this one not so much. I mean I liked it but it didn‘t completely do it for me. I am a huge Rhen and Harper fan so I wish there could‘ve been more of them. The writing is spectacular and that twist at the end explained the parts that didn‘t jive with me. The entire time I was like “why can‘t y‘all just talk to each other???” (Continued in comments) #LitsyLove

Lollymya It would solve so much. Also, I am character driven reader and Grey and Lia Mara didn‘t do it for me. To be honest I am nervous where this is headed and I probably won‘t like it. 3y

Isn‘t that cover gorgeous? So, this is volume 2 in the Cursebreakers series by Brigid Kemmerer and returning to Emberfall seems like coming home. This one is focused on Gray and he has a problem with an unlikely set of companions to aid him. Lots of adventure, magic, treachery and romance. #100YEARS100BOOKS #56 #BookSpinBingo #23 #BFC21 #SERIES2021 #YApril #5 #DisabilityReadathon #ThankfulAthon #AwesomeApril

I tried to read this one when it was first released but immediately became grumpy, it reminds me a bit of a court of thorns and roses when the swoony guy from the first book ends up being... well. You know. Anyway picking this back up and sticking with it meant I did actually really like it. I‘m intrigued to know how the trilogy ends because ugh. Harper girl you need to catch a break. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AAARRGH this book?!!!

You KNOW it's a good series when book 2 flips everything in book 1 on its head.

There was a FANTASTIC introduction to Shyl Shadow and how different it is from Emberfall. So many times reading this I gasped or swore or fist-pumped (I now am banned from reading on the couch next to my husband, lol) and I can't not wait for book 3 to come in... #cursebreakers has been really enjoyable and there's so much to explore still.

Next up, because it is a hold and apparently 7 other people want to read it (I can't blame them!) is Book 2 of the Cursebreaker series. Which, tbh, I've already started reading a couple of days ago. I tend to read at least a couple of books at the same time/over the same span of time. And in other notes, my poor husband has a foot fracture and an air boot cast, and he is miserable with pain, so our routines are totally shot + I'm up all night. 😔

This was a great follow-up to the first. It builds upon the story of Rhen & Harper coming together & trying to put the kingdom back together by twisting & making Rhen the antagonist. I wouldn't have predicted that, but it makes so much sense & adds a new layer of conflict. Grey has always been a great character, but Lia Mara is just as engaging & made this story so difficult to put down. Lots of action & drama! I can't wait to read the 3rd!

jmtrivera I got a chapter sampler from Netgalley for the third book in this series, and I'm so excited for it! 4y

Have to listen to my #audiobook, #GhostCat has me "ghost locked" (to borrow the very apt phrase from Stroud's Lockwood and Co).

6 hours already ?

Buechersuechtling Jealousy. 🤭 For you to own a cat 🐈 (even if, I understand that, it‘s not there) and for you to already have clocked 6 hours. 4y
julesG @Buechersuechtling Two cats actually. #ShadowCat is a bit shy though. Those 6 hours are just because my daughter forgot to tell me that there was no distance learning this morning. Got up as always tried to wake the kid who then told me that there was nothing going on before 10 am. So I made tea and read for an hour in the morning, followed by preparing breakfast and later lunch while listening to the tagged book. And kid free weekend ahead. 😬 4y
Buechersuechtling Brilliant. 😁 Then: May the reading continue successfully. 📚 4y

I liked this better than A Curse So Dark and Lonely. I loved Harper but wasn‘t a big fan of Rhen so I never really brought into the romance. I didn‘t like Grey that much in the first book either but his character development was well done and Lia Mara is awesome sauce, so a pick from me. Bring on Book 3! #popsugarchallenge2021

I usually wait on second books in a trilogy, but well, the library hold came up, and off I went a reading. The focus shifts in this one which was interesting. It's much more about the politics of alliances and war and such, so I'll be interested to see where that takes us for the next one.
Some severe pining with a new couple.
Content note: Some torture, violence, imprisonment.

pareads I was bored 😴 I thought the first one was great but this one I was not really into 4y
FantasyChick @pareads Right? It felt like a spin off that I didn't need or want. And the author just kind of took all the character development from the first book and just threw it out the window. I skimmed the majority of it. 4y
Johanna414 I couldnt even get through it... flipped ahead to the end and realized there was going to be yet another book and just gave up. 4y
FantasyChick @Johanna414 I more or less did the same. I must have skimmed the first 80% looking for key points and then went right to the ending. I never would have made it if I read the whole thing through lol 4y

#JubilantJuly @Andrew65 & July #BookSpin Bingo @TheAromaofBooks Fantastic sequel! In this adventure will see Grey & other characters like Lia Mara & Iisek. Full of adventure can't say much (spoiler free) but remember this is a YA novel, magic world will be "simple" maybe for high fantasy readers and you'll find some "cheesy" but cute romance. I just let out again my Princess Bride mood. The end will make you scream, demand the 3rd book now☺️3.8⭐️

Finished this one the other day. I rushed it in order to return it to the library before my vacation. Spending a few weeks in Vermont with family and friends so I probably won't have much reading time.

I have no idea how many books will end up being part of this series but I cannot wait for the next one!
