“And we all learn more when we are interested.”I love that line because I feel like it‘s so true. I know that when I‘m interested in something I want to learn more about it, but if I‘m not interested then I don‘t really care about it.

I started reading this book a few weeks ago, and so far I‘m liking it. I wouldn‘t say this is my most favourite book ever, but it‘s not that bad. It‘s about a really short girl who auditions to be in the play The Wizard of Oz, and gets a role as a munchkin. She is immediately captivated by the director of the play. She meets two new friends, Olive and Mrs. Chang. And all of a sudden she knows this is going to be a good summer for her.

A pick- for this one, as I felt there could have been a little more to it but it was still good.

Julia spends a summer in the theater, learning about art and people and herself. Some really good insights here. There‘s less of dealing with discrimination and such than I feel was promised in the blurb, but it also kept the tone from preachy.

This was delightful! Julia is a charming kid who is short for her age. She takes a leadership role as a Munchkin in the local production of The Wizard of Oz. She shares her quirky humor and unique observations with the mentors she meets through the play. I alternated between tearing up and laughing out loud while reading.

ladym30 Such a lovely photo!❤️ 5y
MandaMT @ladym30 Thanks! I do a lot of “here‘s my book on a blanket/ table.” Figured I‘d mix it up by utilizing one of the potted plants outside. 5y

Middle reader book written in an observation point of view. The voice of Julia is entertaining, as are her observations of the adults and cast of a summer stock play she participates in.

I've been there, done this. And when I gained too much weight to fit, we used our neighbor's 7 year old. Dog doors are convenient like that!

Amandajoy I once broke into a house this way so we could leave sympathy flowers for a coworker. Yes, the situation was as bizarre as it sounds. 7y

Today is apparently a middle grade/YA day; I can't focus on anything too in-depth (hello, neuro fatigue, how I've NOT missed you), and besides, it's football Sunday!

Redwritinghood Sounds interesting, but I don't think I'll have the time to join. Will be interested in seeing what you read, though. 7y

Getting ready for a few days of break and planning which books to read! I think these will be the first 5 up... All colorful YA and MG titles. That's definitely what I'm in the mood for!

ramyasbookshelf I've only read one of the books in the pile. I really enjoyed it! I'm bookmarking the rest :) 8y
Zelma Please Ignore Vera Dietz is fantastic! Not of the light and cute variety but really, really good. 8y
LiteraryinPA @Zelma Good point. From the description that one is the edgy and suspenseful one of the bunch. Good to have some variety within my YA selections! 8y

I read 12 books in March. Lots of kids books as I try to be as prepared as possible for Children's Institute this week. Here are the first 6.

Suzze How was Solo? I so loved his others. News of the World is on my shelf waiting for me to choose it. 8y
Qemorio @Suzze I really liked it. It's all written in poem form which I thought would be weird but lends itself well to this story. 8y

I'm trying to read as much as possible over spring break. Just started Short tonight while I was lying in bed with my youngest daughter as she read to herself. If only I didn't need sleep.

What a fun book! Julia is reluctant to be in a summer theater production of the Wizard of Oz, but once she starts she loves it! She makes friends, but with adults. I loved her voice and the emphasis of adults not related to her in her life. I think lots of kids are friends with adults (neighbors, friends of parents, etc) and this may be the first book that almost centers on those friendships. Packed with universal truths too, and very fun.
