From the USA Today bestselling author of the international sensation Baby Teeth comes a claustrophobic psychological thriller about one woman's nightmarish spiral while quarantined with her mother.Grace isn't exactly thrilled when her newly widowed mother, Jackie, asks to move in with her. They've never had a great relationship, and Grace likes her space--especially now that she's stuck at home during a pandemic. Then again, she needs help with the mortgage after losing her job. And maybe it'll be a chance for them to bond--or at least give each other a hand. But living with Mother isn't for everyone. Good intentions turn bad soon after Jackie moves in. Old wounds fester; new ones open. Grace starts having nightmares about her disabled twin sister, who died when they were kids. And Jackie discovers that Grace secretly catfishes people online--a hobby Jackie thinks is unforgivable. When Jackie makes an earth-shattering accusation against her, Grace sees it as an act of revenge, and it sends her spiraling into a sleep-deprived madness. As the walls close in, the ghosts of Grace's past collide with a new but familiar threat: Mom.

Ok, so I think this book was a bit of a mess. There was a lot I liked about it, but idk. Too many dream sequences. If you like a maddening amount of dream sequences then this book is for you. I don‘t like the Covid/pandemic aspect of the novel either, even tho the author started writing this book in the height of it, so I get it but it felt like an extra plot line that made the book feel clunky. It would have been better without it tbh.

This was kind of a pointless book with mostly disable characters.

#shelfiesunday Happy Mother's day everyone! These skull bookends are one of the gifts my boys got me. I think it's safe to say you're a bit of a weirdo when this is what your kids think of when they think of you 😂 I absolutely love them though and they're perfect for my gothic/Edgar Allen Poe themed library.

I‘d say Mothered is on par with Baby Teeth—it‘s a notch above average, but not without its issues. I love the conceit about an estranged mother and daughter forced to lock down together in the midst of a Covid-like pandemic. When Grace begins to have nightmares, Stage uses the sequences to great effect, blurring the line between reality and infusing the book with a sense of dread that puts the reader just as on edge as our protagonist.

Book 92📚 4⭐️

Such gripping characters in her pages!

The only way to describe this book is an intense fever dream.

Graces mom moves in with her at the start of the pandemic and as we all know, it went down hill from there. Way, way, down…🔪

An incisive and terrifying suspense story where the pandemic isn‘t even the scariest piece of the plot. Absolutely incredible.

God, I love her. The previous two were fine, but this is “Baby Teeth”-level good so far. 😈 #mothered #zojestage #localauthors #pittsburghlit

🎧 It begins with an author‘s note. Then you jump in not knowing what‘s happening. The dream sequences leave you thinking WWWTTTFFF 😆

Unreliable narrator? Pandemic. Schizophrenia? Quarantine, Grace is locked in with Jackie. Daughter & recently widowed mother in daughter‘s house.

Grace tells the story.

Grace left home at an early age to escape her dysfunctional family & the cruelties inflicted by her wheelchair confined twin.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Twainy
The mother/daughter relationship is tense & when Jackie spins a story about Hope, Grace loses it. Who‘s perception is correct? I enjoyed

I found the dream sequences to be a bit frustrating and confusing , that being said there were some really creepy parts in this book which I enjoyed they were unnerving in the best way. It just isn't one of those books that stayed with me once I was finished with it. Maybe I was expecting another Baby Teeth and this one just didn't hit the mark for me.

Oh my, this book is creepy good! If you liked Baby Teeth you will enjoy this one about Grace, whose aging mother moves in and chaos ensues! Grace‘s disabled twin, Hope died when they were younger and Grace still has nightmares. And the “nightmare” continues to its crazy conclusion! Need a palate-cleanser after this one!😱❤️

It is the beginning of Covid19 in April 2020 and Grace and Jackie are living together. They‘ve never had a great relationship, and Grace likes her space, especially now that she‘s stuck at home during a pandemic. But living with Mother isn‘t for everyone. Good intentions turn bad soon after Jackie moves in. Grace starts having nightmares about her disabled twin sister, who died when they were kids.

EadieB This book was a slow burn but turned into a nightmare towards the end. Grace just purchased her home and is not sure how to make ends meet with just losing her job. Her mother, Jackie, just lost her husband and Grace is going mental and doesn't know what is real or not real. It definitely is a crazy time for all. If you like books written during Covid 19, then you will love this book. 2y

#NetGalley

I have enjoyed other reads by this author, and this was so close to being a pick, but I was bothered by some of the choices the author made about a character with cerebral palsy.

The book reads like a mad fever dream once the action kicks off, and that coupled with the sense of dread of the pandemic and quarantine was extremely unnerving.

There are some unexpected twists and one hell of a crazy ending. 😁

vivastory What were her choices re: CP? That stuff can drive me crazy. 2y
Addison_Reads @vivastory Spoiler alert: The character was evil, which could have been okay except I feel like disabled people don't get enough recognition in literature as it is. But most of her descriptions of the character always leaned toward gross ones, talking about her drool and spit, her accidents on herself, which I realize is part of it, but there's more to a person with CP than just that. I may be being overly sensitive but it rubbed me the wrong way. 2y
vivastory I agree with you re: recognition. That's troubling that she dwells on physical effects of CP (which can range broadly). One of my biggest pet peeves in books, although thankfully it doesn't happen much anymore, is the disinformation that writers insert when describing a seizure. Drives me crazy. 2y
