The Sleeping Car Porter
The Sleeping Car Porter | Suzette Mayr
38 posts | 24 read | 32 to read
When a mudslide strands a train, Baxter, a gay Black sleeping car porter, must contend with the perils of white passengers, ghosts, and his secret love affair The Sleeping Car Porter brings to life an important part of Black history in North America, from the perspective of a gay man living in a culture that renders him invisible in two ways. Affecting, imaginative, and visceral enough that you'll feel the rocking of the train, The Sleeping Car Porter is a stunning accomplishment. Baxter's name isn't George. But it's 1929, and Baxter is lucky enough, as a Black man, to have a job as a sleeping car porter on a train that crisscrosses the country. So when the passengers call him George, he has to just smile and nod and act invisible. What he really wants is to go to dentistry school, but he'll have to save up a lot of nickel and dime tips to get there, so he puts up with "George." On this particular trip out west, the passengers are more unruly than usual, especially when the train is stalled for two extra days; their secrets start to leak out and blur with the sleep-deprivation hallucinations Baxter is having. When he finds a naughty postcard of two gay men, Baxter's memories and longings are reawakened; keeping it puts his job in peril, but he can't part with the postcard or his thoughts of Edwin Drew, Porter Instructor.

I finished my second pick from @Chelsea.Poole #auldlangspine list, and it was another winner! Mayr was a new to me author and I loved the way she took a piece of American history that‘s been glossed over effectively enough that I knew about it but hadn‘t spent much time thinking about it before, and used immersive, experiential storytelling to convey the depth of that lived experience. I see this one sticking with me for a long time. @monalyisha

Chelsea.Poole And this is what‘s so fantastic about @monalyisha ‘s #AuldLangSpine — this was on my list from @TheKidUpstairs last year, which is how I discovered it. I‘m happy it worked for you and I agree, I think you‘ll find it‘s one that leaves a lasting impression. (edited) 10mo

9:45 p.m. Standing next to his step box, Baxter hovers: immobile and elastic, ready to spring forward to lift a suitcase, dissect a timetable, point to the conductor, nod, lift more suitcases, now hat boxes, answer more questions, and nod, nod, nod. #firstlinefridays @ShyBookOwl

@Chelsea.Poole What a great list! The only one I‘ve already read is #4. The rest seem like a really fun mix of things that have been on my radar for a while but I‘ve never picked up, and things I‘ve never heard of before. I‘m hoping to get to a fiction and a nonfiction pick during January, so these 2 are now on hold at the library, but I definitely plan to keep coming back to this list throughout the year. ♥️📚 #AuldLangSpine2024

CBee @Chelsea.Poole actually wait, we read some of the same books but only one is the same (My Murder). I always end up with 20 because I can‘t narrow it down. I loved The One, and the Makkai! I also added The Sleeping Car to my TBR because of your review I think 😊 11mo

IndoorDame @Amiable I‘ve actually never read anything about 9/11, but lately I‘ve been feeling ready to go back there after all this time. (Metaphorically. I was in NM, but I think all NYers were felt like we were there that day) 11mo
Amiable @IndoorDame I lived just outside Boston that day. Several people from our neighboring towns were on the planes that left from Logan Airport. I adored this! The sleep deprivation to the point of hallucination — I could FEEL that. I could feel the rocking motion of the train, the demands of thoughtless passengers and the deep fear of being fired for things beyond Baxter‘s control & not of his doing. I was transported into the Black porter‘s 1929 racist world, indignant on his behalf, loved him for the care he took with a traumatized child, and pleased with the hopeful conclusion.

Lindy I must catch up with reviews: so many showing “still reading” here on Litsy when, in actuality, I finished them long ago. 11mo

Just what the TBR pile ordered. I was floundering in hopes of a good book that would be beyond straight forward narrative. After a few false starts, I fell into this hallucinatory gem that chugged along like the fastest train. A shame to try to explain this Giller Prize winner because of all the different bits and bobs- but way more than a Sleepy Car Porter!

BIG THANKS to @Jari-chan and @TrishB for putting this book on my #ReadersRadar - I absolutely loved it 🥰 Baxter is a young black man who works as a sleeping car porter in 1920‘s Canada, when train travel was an elegant mode of transportation . He‘s often treated poorly by the guests and management where he must hide his personal feelings and serve the needs of his compartment travelers in hopes of garnering a tip for his services. Lovely 🎧

Jari-chan Oh, it must be nice as an audiobook! So happy you enjoyed the book as well ❤️ 1y
Cinfhen Audio was wonderful but I think the book had illustrations based on audio descriptions @Jari-chan The reader was so good though. He really brought Baxter to life. 1y

TheKidUpstairs My absolute fave from last year. Totally deserved it's Giller Prize win. I imagine it would work really well on audio, the rhythm of the writing was so much a part of it. (There were no illustrations in the physical book) 1y
Cinfhen Ohhh interesting @TheKidUpstairs because the audiobook describes posters and trains and it seemed like the descriptions were based from photographs or illustrations 1y

To me it was sold as a sort of Alice In Wonderland, which is not the case. But I still don't regret having read this book. I haven't heard about the Sleeping Car Porters before and Mayr does a great job in showing us, how terrible it must've been. The reading list at the end of the book show clearly, how much work and effort she put into this book. And it truly shows.

For next months #TitlesAndTunes I immediately thought The Sleeping Car Porter. Not because the World is Baxters Oyster, but because he tries everything to make it so. Then the song Rule The World by Walk Off The Earth popped up in my mind and refused to leave. It might isn't the most creative choice, but I think the song fits the book and the topic. It's stuck in my head now, anyways...

Well you wouldn‘t want Baxter‘s life would you. Boy, oh boy. Character driven book that is really about being a black, gay man in the 1920s. I would not like to have been a black, gay man in the 1920s, I would also not have liked this servitude of a job. Beautifully written.

This is a deceptively simple and short book that carries so much weight. A black gay man works on the train attending to customers night & day. It took me a minute to get into it and then I felt the exhaustion, the fear of receiving demerits that would result in his firing, the secrecy of his desires. Esme, a little girl who has lost her mother and clings to the porter, is an especially tender touch in the book. Giller Prize winner for a reason.

A character study of a sleeping car porter named Baxter, who is gay and black. He‘s desperate to learn more about his favorite subject, dentistry, and considered lucky to hold the position he does on “the fastest train in the land” across Canada. Baxter has a rich inner life he must keep separate from his passengers who he must wait on hand and foot. A varied cast of passengers is introduced. Tensions build in this claustrophobic environment.⬇️

Chelsea.Poole #audlangspine pick from @TheKidUpstairs and I‘m so happy I finally prioritized this one. Baxter is such a singular character, I doubt I‘ll forget him. I truly loved this and now I‘ll be stalking your list every year!! 😆 I never would have picked this up on my own and that‘s why #alspine is the gift that keeps giving @monalyisha 2y
TheKidUpstairs I'm so glad you loved it! This was my number one pick last year, I just thought it was so brilliant. I felt such tension for Baxter reading it, just urging the train to go, and nothing to go wrong for him. And the rhythm of the writing mimicking the rhythm of the train, chugging along until the train stops and it all fractures. And such a beautiful ending! It makes me giddy when someone else loves this book, too! 2y
monalyisha Well, okay. Stacked from your review & from your ensuing discussion, @Chelsea.Poole & @TheKidUpstairs! 2y

Chelsea.Poole @TheKidUpstairs oh yeah, all that chaos. So claustrophobic and tense. I‘ve been beholden to others in service jobs though nothing to the extent that Baxter goes (through on that train)but the part about pretending to be an automaton was oh so relatable! 2y
Suet624 I purchased this one a few years ago and just as it comes up to the top of the pile to read a library hold comes in. Can‘t wait to read it! 1y

This book doesn‘t have much of a plot. It‘s more of an exploration of what it was like to be a gay black man working in the service industry in the 1920s. Turns out it was pretty rough, but it had its bright spots.

I am bummed to report this was an underwhelming, kind of boring read. It's very different from Mayr's other books that I've read, which are very weird and eccentric, like about lesbian vegetarian vampires. This is straight historical fiction, very details focused, obviously very well researched. I just... didn't care, despite my initial interest in this slice of 1920s queer Black Canadian life. Partially it might have been the audiobook narration?

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I'm baffled that this won the Giller, Canada's top literary award. Not that Suzette Mayr did, but that this book in particular did. 2y

#12Booksof2022 On the tenth day of Christmas, my reading gave to me... a Giller Prize winning masterpiece.

October was also a great month for fun reads (I see you, Killers of a Certain Age and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches), but this one topped everything. It was my number one read of 2022, so deserving of all its accolades!

Chelsea.Poole Eeek! I can‘t wait to read this! It‘ll be a minute because I have several due back before it that I need to get through and it‘s a physical book which always takes me longer! 🐌 If not this month, hopefully next. Also, I‘m about to start the tagged from your #auldlangspine 2y

1929: Baxter is a sleeping car porter, saving his tips for his dream to become a dentist. Sleep deprived, under pressure to keep his job threatened by privileged spoiled passengers, constant racism, and the absolute fear to keep his queerness undercover has him exhausted and hallucinating. The long trip across Canada is made longer with the train stalling…absolutely brilliant. Exhausted just reading his travails. Photo: 20th Century Liner.

The Giller shortlist will be announced tomorrow morning. I‘ve circled my favourites, the ones I hope to see chosen. Three are by Indigenous authors, at least two are by queer authors and three authors are from my home province, Alberta. Am I biased? There are four that I haven‘t yet read, so I put a ? on those covers.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Your Shortlist hopefuls look very, very similar to mine. 2y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I‘m thinking A Minor Chorus over All the Quiet Places and Avenue of Champions. It has lasting impact (for me at least) and definitely more impact then Quiet Places. * my opinion * 2y
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Yes, Minor Chorus makes quite an impact. Oof! I think All the Quiet Places has more general appeal, despite its quietness, but of the three Indigenous books, Minor Chorus is most deserving of literary recognition. 2y
