Passion | Jeanette Winterson
post image
Pickpick

France and Italy. War and love. Passion and obsession. Storytelling and fact. A fever dream of a book. What's not to love? Winterson goes such an interesting direction with this historical fiction book that takes place during the Napoleonic wars. She uses a unique voice that I would never associate with a story part war, and characters just as unique. I think I will be thinking about this book for a long time. #ALSpine #AuldLangSpine

monalyisha Great review! 3d
Billypar Glad you liked it! I love how it starts as a strange sort of war story that picks up fantasy aspects as it goes. And I will be forever haunted by the gambler story told by Villanelle 😨😨😨 2d

@CSeydel my heart is full of so many emotions after reading this beautiful book. I loved every minute of it. I wish I could write more but I‘m really just basking in this feeling that will without a doubt develop into a book hangover. Thank you for putting this on your list! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ #auldlangspine #ALSpine @monalyisha

CSeydel I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! I read it with #europacollective - never would have heard of it otherwise. I‘m looking forward to reading the second one 4d
CBee @CSeydel I had an Amazon credit and I immediately used it to buy the second 😂 4d

Every so often I have a graphic novel fixation, and I‘m back on it. Bonus points if it is nonfiction or a memoir and this one is! The author grew up in Turkey and takes the reader along from the time she‘s a child, too young to be in school—though she yearns to join her sister there—through college and young adulthood. Her changes are depicted right alongside changes to her country and therefore family. A #blameitonlitsy read thanks to @JamieArc

JamieArc This came from the #ALSpine list from @yourfavouritemixtape I love when not well known books make their way around Litsy to find new people who love them ❤️. So glad you picked it up and enjoyed it! 6d
TieDyeDude Samesies! This looks good, I'll have to look for it in our library system. 4d

Thank you to my #AuldLangSpine #ALSpine partner, @Erinreadsthebooks for recommending this one. It‘s been on my TBR for a while and this motivated me to move it to the top of the list.

My Throat an Open Grave | Tori Bovalino

My first book of 2025! A creepy folk horror that takes place in the woods of Appalachia, My Throat An Open Grave oozes feminine rage, religious shame, and generational trauma. Leah wishes for her baby brother to be taken by The Lord of the Wood, and he claims her offering. This book has a rich atmosphere and dream like depictions. Much thanks to @Larkken for an excellent first read of the year! 4/5 AuldLangSpine #ALspine

This was my first from @Billypar #ALSpine list and it was a great first read of 2025. I won‘t say much about it. Knowing less going in is more. Really atmospheric modern gothic psychological thriller. Foreboding and tension. The story unfurls in a masterful way. At halfway through I couldn‘t put it down. This book is about a lot of interesting things and makes you think but that would give some things away. Check Vinny‘s great review for more!

JamieArc Check trigger warnings if you have any. This story gets a bit dark. 3w

BarbaraBB I loved this one too. So atmospheric! 3w
JamieArc @BarbaraBB I do love an atmospheric read! 3w
Billypar It sounds like you liked it as much as I did! 🙂 Definitely one to go in blind on. Which is true for me and Tom Lake - for all the attention it got, I realized I actually knew zero about the plot. I just started it today after finishing a holdover from 2024, but I'm already hooked. 3w
Billypar If you're interested, below is the podcast episode with Lennon that first introduced me to him. @BarbaraBB I can't remember if I already shared this with you? https://open.spotify.com/episode/4G0fISU2x6iD8h0V7M0asn?si=zg2puYAgSLaD2rreu8q_a... 3w
JamieArc @Billypar Thanks - I‘ll check it out. I‘m from Michigan and Tom Lake reps MI well. I vacation where it takes place and that‘s probably part of why I liked it. Glad you are liking it too! I hadn‘t heard of Lennon and probably wouldn‘t have read this, so I‘m really glad it was on your list. I plan to read more so if you or @BarbaraBB have recs, send them my way! 3w
BarbaraBB @Billypar No you didn‘t. Thank you so much, I will certainly listen to it. 3w
BarbaraBB Jamie, I loved the tagged one and it made me want to read all of his backlist. All his books are completely different but you can‘t go wrong I think . 3w
Billypar I also read Subdivision first, and it's the only other one I've read so far, but I certainly plan to read more. It is a very different novel, but I liked it even more than Castle (it's even stranger if you can believe that, lol). 3w

Well, this is disappointing: a book I loved listening to while painting my house but found out some problematic info about the author after finishing it. North Korean defector Yeonmi Park has been accused of fabricating some of this story. I‘m not sure what to believe but this is a book for my deep dive into North Korea. I‘m looking forward to Nothing to Envy next from @Singout ‘s #alspine list. A brutal story of survival. Conflicted pick

JenniferEgnor One of the books I checked out today is a memoir of life under dictatorship in Korea and escape. 3w
Singout Wow. That‘s a really good example of what a complete split there is between political analyses. 3w

Chelsea.Poole @JenniferEgnor what is the title? Have you seen the documentary Beyond Utopia? 3w
Chelsea.Poole @Singout have you read this one? Seeing Nothing to Envy on your list encouraged me to watch Beyond Utopia while waiting to start it in January. I‘ve also read that North Korean troops are being sent to the front lines in Russia, recently, which was news to me. Just feels like I should be paying more attention than I have been. So I thank you for the encouragement. 3w
Singout No, I haven‘t. And yes, North Korean involvement ups the ante even more. It‘s very frightening. 3w
JenniferEgnor @Chelsea.Poole Escape from Camp 14. Have not seen that. 3w
Chelsea.Poole @JenReadsAlot @JenniferEgnor oh are you two doing a buddy read of this? I‘ll add it to my list. There‘s quite a few. 3w
JenReadsAlot We are not! @JenniferEgnor I would be curious what you think! 3w
Kristy_K This is disappointing. I read this years ago and remember enjoying it. Thanks for the article link! (edited) 3w
JenniferEgnor @Chelsea.Poole @JenReadsAlot once I get through my current stack…! 3w
youneverarrived Thanks for the article link - I read it a few years ago and thought it was brilliant. Nothing to Envy was one of my 2024 favourites. 3w
