Brave Hearted
Brave Hearted: The Dramatic Story of Women of the American West | Katie Hickman
12 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
"Myth and misunderstanding spring from the American frontier as readily as rye grass from sod, and - like the wiry grass - seem as difficult to weed out and discard." The true-life story of women's experiences in the 'Wild West' is more gripping, more heart-rending, and more stirring than all the movies, novels, folk-legends and ballads that popular imagination has been able to create. Whether they were the hard-drinking hard-living poker players and prostitutes of the new boom towns, 'ordinary' wives and mothers walking two thousand miles across the prairies pulling their handcarts behind them, Chinese slave-brides working in laundries, or the Native American women displaced by the mass migration of the 'whites' to their lands, all have one trait in common: that of extreme resilience and courage in the face of the unknown. Reading the extraordinary accounts they have left behind them, their experiences seem as strange to us today as it must have been to have lived through them, perhaps even stranger. They were put to the test, in terms of sheer survival, in ways that we can only dimly imagine. Praise for Katie Hickman 'Fascinating . . . I was swept along by Hickman's concise chapters and her crisp, wry style,' The Times 'Absolutely brilliant . . . remarkable women, until now almost unknown. I was so gripped I couldn't put it down' Antonia Fraser 'Goes beneath the surface of imperial male history . . . a cast of extraordinary women. Wonderful' Anita Anand

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction

Pulled it out at the last minute & finished this one for #RiseUpReads Torn between So-So & Pick, I‘m going with a pick because while I grew up in Northern California & Oregon & was taught the history of the states, so much of it was white-washed & little was taught about women & the roles they played. This book isn‘t perfect—it slogs (I skimmed some chapters) & the focus is mostly on the white experience but there ⬇️

DebinHawaii … is some good information in here & I liked learning more about subjects & themes that intersect with historical fiction I‘ve read.

peanutnine As always, the history of violence against the indigenous peoples is so upsetting in its cruelty 💔 3d
AmyG Human beings are so very cruel. 3d
mhillis Yes and all the buffalo herds killed too. The folk tale from Old Lady Horse about their disappearance was something I‘d never heard before (edited) 3d

Butterfinger I had to google olive. At first glance, I thought the post was horror-then the sadistic person who did experiments on enslaved people in New Orleans. I didn't know there had been an indigenous people who tattoos. 3d
peanutnine These were some of the more interesting characters that I was glad to learn more about. Mrs Nash's story was a great example of how trans people have always existed and found ways to survive in the world 3d
Catsandbooks @peanutnine Their story was one that really stood out to me! 22h

Mehso-so

I just thought this was OK. I thought it focused too much on white groups, but what did everyone else think?

Skygoddess1 I bailed on this one. 3d
Laughterhp Oops! Forgot to read this one. 3d
mhillis I‘ve finished reading it!! omg the chapters on cholera and the Donner Party!! But I learned a lot from the last couple of chapters especially, for example about the lives of Chinese women brought to San Francisco. 3d
Catsandbooks @Bookwormjillk you could definitely skim or skip to the last few chapters which I thought were more interesting 22h
Catsandbooks @peanutnine audiobook was a savior for this one 🫠 22h
Catsandbooks @mhillis yes the last couple chapters were much better than the rest of the book 😂 22h

The second half of this book was good and chronicled a variety of women in the American West- pioneers, Native Americans, slaves and immigrants. The first half of the book dragged a bit for me, but if you like western expansion and the gold rush era, this book would be right up your alley. I was more intrigued by the Native American chapters than the other portions of the book. 3.5/5 stars

This is an absolutely captivating book. There's so much information here but it's written in such a way that it rarely becomes academically dry to read. The author steers away from the more well-known personalities such as Calamity Jane (who is briefly mentioned but just the once) & concentrates on the everyday life of ordinary women. 5🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Little, Brown Book Group UK/Virago, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
