The Eye of Minds (The Mortality Doctrine, Book One)
The Eye of Minds (The Mortality Doctrine, Book One) | James Dashner
The world is virtual, but the danger is real in book one of the bestselling Mortality Doctrine series, the next phenomenon from the author of the Maze Runner series, James Dashner. Includes a sneak peek of The Fever Code, the highly-anticipated conclusion to the Maze Runner seriesthe novel that finally reveals how the maze was built! The VirtNet offers total mind and body immersion, and the more hacking skills you have, the more fun it is. Why bother following the rules when its so easy to break them? But some rules were made for a reason. Some technology is too dangerous to fool with. And one gamer has been doing exactly that, with murderous results. The government knows that to catch a hacker, you need a hacker. And theyve been watching Michael. If he accepts their challenge, Michael will need to go off the VirtNet grid, to the back alleys and corners of the system human eyes have never seenand its possible that the line between game and reality will be blurred forever. The author who brought you the #1 New York Times bestselling MAZE RUNNER series and two #1 moviesThe Maze Runner and The Scorch Trialsnow brings you an electrifying adventure trilogy an edge-of-your-seat adventure that takes you into a world of hyperadvanced technology, cyber terrorists, and gaming beyond your wildest dreams . . . and your worst nightmares. Praise for the Bestselling MORTALITY DOCTRINE series: Dashner takes full advantage of the Matrix-esque potential for asking what is real. io9.com Set in a world taken over by virtual reality gaming, the series perfectly capture[s] Dashners hallmarks for inventiveness, teen dialogue and an ability to add twists and turns like no other author. MTV.com A brilliant, visceral, gamified mash-up of The Matrix and Inception, guaranteed to thrill even the non-gaming crowd. Christian Science Monitor

I enjoyed The Maze Runner so I thought I would give this trilogy a try but I couldn‘t even make it half way into the first book. This book is just terrible and I was not a fan of the writing style AT ALL! (I am a book hoarder so I still have the whole trilogy with no inclination to read it 😬)

I like the little twist at the end where Michael finds out he is a tangent. A tangent is a man made computer artificial intelligence, and while trying to stop Kaine, he had accidentally helped him find out how to put a tangent into a human being.

I am a very picture oriented person, and the fact that, "The Eye of Minds," didn't have any pictures in it lowered my expectations. Even without pictures the book was still interesting-some parts more than others- it's a good read.

I haven't read that far into it, but it has caught my attention from page 1. I would recommend this book for people who like action. I'm not a big reader but this book is good.😏

Genre: Sci-fi
October 7 - November 17
I was interested in finding a sci-fi book, and I found this in the library.
The VirtNet is basically virtual reality but people can feel as if they live in the game. Michael is a teenager that likes being in the VirtNet, but he starts getting suspicious when he witnesses someone commiting suicide. He was then informed that something is happening in the VIrtNet, and he explores it to find the cyberterrorist.

What an engaging story! Based in a world where Virtual Life exists and is common, the plot itself is intriguing with various characters.

From describing the details to revealing the climax, it was a great read. And the way book one ended, gives you quite a bit of a shock.

Must read and recommend.

#readharder The first book in a new-to-you YA series.
Future teens in virtual reality worlds (cool, I liked Ready Player One) by the Maze Runner guy (I liked that one, too.) And yet, this one feels fluffy and tired and I don‘t care about the characters or the worlds. I finished it, but I can‘t recommend it.

I went to the eye doctor today & he told me my eyes are my superpower. Now, when you have terrible vision like me (can't even see the giant "E" on the wall), you think he's a nut. But, I guess the way my eyes work together is why I'm a visual learner & read so quickly & efficiently. They make me a more organized person because of their need for edges. The reason many people don't enjoy reading is because their eyes don't like that movement. Wow!

robinb Congratulations, wish I had a superpower! 🙌🤣 7y
Kaylamburson Hahaha perhaps you have the same superpower!! I imagine most of us on Litsy have this same gift lol. @robinb 7y
robinb @Kaylamburson wish I was a faster reader but unfortunately I‘m not. But you‘re right, slow or fast...we‘re in this together! 😊 7y

The funny part is, at one point I actually said “well at least there‘s no random shoehorned romance” and I kid you not there it was in the next chapter 🙃

Phoenix: "The story takes place in a virtual world where a cyber terrorist is trapping people and three kids have to stop him. I just got back into books after a long video game period. You can't have a book or a video game without a good story. The games I like have a plot, so it's kind of like a book, except you're playing the protagonist. The difference is with reading I can imagine things and what I would do. I like that."

Not nearly as great as "The Maze Runner," but still a good sci-fi YA. The main trio reminded me of the "Percy Jackson" heroes. Fun and full of twists! 4/5 stars

James Dashner's YA SF thriller (the first in a trilogy) is a wooden, listless affair populated by dull characters who never spring to life on the page and with a premise that has MATRIX connotations but whose virtual existence means that the stakes never really feel significant.
