It‘s been a slow start to my reading year for some reason, but my hubby brought me back a new bookmark from his recent trip to South Korea! Now I just need to make more reading time, possibly while watching the Olympic Games!

Am I the only one whose "Reading time" has taken a back seat to the Olympics? #USA #winterolympics

Erinsuereads I‘ve literally had a book sitting on my lap for over an hour and haven‘t touched it. The Super G has me riveted right now. 7y
Madamereginald @ErinSueG ditto! I'm glad I'm not the only one! :) 7y

GarthRanzz We have them playing in the background while reading. But I find myself looking up more than I should be. 7y
Madamereginald @brilliantglow I even bought new books Friday afternoon that I was excited to start...I still haven't started them..haha 7y
Madamereginald @GarthRanzz I think I'd end up reading the same sentences over and over..lol 7y
brilliantglow The Olympics are so frigging distracting lol Sunday I bought a bunch of books and I barely managed to get them onto my shelves. It literally took me 4 hours to do a 10 minute task. 😐 so distracting 7y
Madamereginald @brilliantglow hahaha...aren't we glad they only happen every 2 years... 7y

I‘m pretty much literally housebound with all day long medications being given for my recovering pooch but yet I‘ve barely done any reading in the last 4 days. I‘ve been completely absorbed by the hours upon endless hours of Olympic coverage.

GarthRanzz Another May birthday! It‘s going to be fun around here in three months. 😊 we‘re actually thinking of going to see The Greatest Showman again this weekend. 7y
AndreaReads @GarthRanzz Yay for May birthdays! It is going to be fun! I'm also trying to find an excuse to go see the movie again this weekend...but for now I'll just have to settle for the soundtrack! 😂 (edited) 7y
GarthRanzz Oh yes. That‘s been on repeat for most of the last couple of weeks when music is playing. 🎼 I think we‘re going to hit Brewvies to watch it Sunday since they just started playing it for the next week. 7y

AndreaReads @GarthRanzz Awesome! Will do! 7y
JaclynW I keep hearing how great The Greatest Showman is. I'm obviously missing out! I've never been to Brewvies either, how is it? 7y
AndreaReads @JaclynW I seriously LOVE that show. I've already pre-ordered the Blu-Ray (but will also get a copy on Amazon)--it's definitely a new favorite. And Brewvies is a lot like dine-in movie theaters in other parts of the country--they serve good food along with alcoholic drinks (but you don't have to order the drinks). It's pretty good and fun to do something different than the same-old movie theater. 7y
JaclynW @AndreaReads I went to see The Greatest Showman tonight. It was pretty great! I can see why people love it so much. I will have to drive down and try Brewvies sometime. We have something similar to that up here that we used to go to but I don't even know if it still exists. It's a nice concept. 7y

My #BookishOlympics round up! No medaling for me this time around. Maybe if I hadn't struggled through that heinous mess of a book during them. 😭

My fave was Aristotle & Dante, my least favorite was The Little Red Chairs bc 😡 it still makes me angry. I almost finished How to Set a Fire and Why & I'm also in the middle of Little Black Book of Stories. 📚

Is there a participation ribbon at least? A nickel medal, maybe? 😂😂🎗

Shortstack 3 books in one week is still seriously respectable! I'm just happy when I hit my at least 1 book a week quota and that's with audiobooks! 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack #GradSchoolLife I feel you! Audiobooks are life in school. And yes it is! I'm definitely not complaining, mostly just laughing at my attempts being thwarted this week. 😂 Hope your paper's coming well! 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat I'm with you on the participation ribbon or maybe some snazzy gold stars. 🎗🌟🌟🌟 8y

Shortstack @BookishFeminist I finished the rough draft with all of my references in place. Going to do my edits in the morning and then submit! Thanks for asking! 8y
BookishFeminist @Books_Wine_Repeat YES GOLD STARS like the kind we would get on completed assignments in elementary school 💯💯💯 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack No problem! Glad it's done. 👍🏼 Editing is always done better after some sleep. 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist it's a solid draft so it shouldn't take long to edit in the morning. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 that's good. So nice to write things and be mostly okay with them! 8y
Shortstack I'm actually really curious how many books I'll read in 2017 once my schooling is done. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack omg SO MANY. The number of books I read after grad school more than doubled from 25-30/year during school. First year out was 75+, last year 100+, this year I've already gone way past that. Also I can read more difficult stuff faster now. My degree was in law so all of a sudden classics became a breeze bc it was still way easier than reading 50 hours of legalese each week 😂 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I'm currently doing about 50-60 a year. I'll be writing on the novel more when I'm done with school, but not as much time as school. I'd love to hit over 100 a year eventually! I want to focus on getting some of the big books on my list read next year though. I'm English Literature so I don't have any issues reading classics either. 😂 8y
StephBengtson Yes! Great job! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack you're going to read so many books in 2017 it will be ridiculous. It'll be like pulling an all-nighter to catch up with an old friend. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @StephBengtson Thank you! You too! 🎉 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I'm really looking forward to joining all of the readathon type activities here once I'm done, too! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I can't wait either! It'll be so much fun! 8y

Megabooks Brazil is in deep shit both literally and figuratively right now. Games in Rio were a bad idea. Athens 2004 practically bankrupted Greece. What do you think of Tokyo 2020? I think Boston and DC were smart to pull out of 2024. Not good locations. 8y
Megabooks I have mixed feelings about watching, but I really love gymnastics. 🙁 8y
shawnmooney @Ebooksandcooks I am vehemently opposed to the Olympics everywhere and anywhere. I hope to live long enough to see the day when they are abolished. 8y
See All 17 Comments
shawnmooney @Ebooksandcooks It helps that I loathe all sports. I've never watched a full game of any type of sport live or on TV in my life, never mind any Olympics coverage. :) 8y
ramblingsofareader I have to admit I generally will watch a bit of the Olympics, but I'm opposed to them this year, owing to the fact I strongly believe they should have been cancelled, or at the very least postponed due to the threat of the Zika virus. I think it's irresponsible for any athletes to attend because it's everyone's health that is at risk. 8y
ImaginativeMom I'm not awake enough to wade in, but....Yes, Rio fucked up and it was a corrupt IOC that gave it the games. However! The Olympics give athletes in sports like rowing, fencing, archery a platform to compete against the best in the world. It's not about "sports," but the tradition of sport. It's not about over priced American basketball, it's about a girl in Iran who competes in weight lifting or the refugees competing under the Olympic flag. 8y
mcctrish I think like every thing else there are many layers to the Olympics. @ImaginativeMom you are bang on about the Olympics and the tradition of sport. I like to think they bring us together as a people and showcase commitment and overcoming challenges. The refugees marching in with all the athletes gave me goosebumps. 8y
shawnmooney @ramblingsofareader @ImaginativeMom @mcctrish Good people are on both sides of this debate, and I respect the opinion that there remains some redeeming value to the Olympics while fundamentally disagreeing. For me, the Olympics is completely skunked - the IOC is the moral equivalent of the mafia. The idea of the mafia doing something nice for refugees might complicate my condemnation of the mafia, but not all that much. 8y
mcctrish Oh I agree the IOC is garbage 8y
Miznanner Agree with both sides: was more than a little disturbed by the irony of the opening including indigenous people while showcasing a supermodel, and I could not help thinking of all the people displaced. And what happens after? Have you seen photos of the glorious structures from past Games falling apart now, abandoned. All of that said: I think of the athletes from the tiniest countries representing with pride, the refugees... 8y
AlexandraGriffin How are the olympics sexist? I'm genuinely asking here. I grew up playing sports and absolutely love them, and I love the olympics though there are definitely some serious problems with them and all major sporting competitions all over the world (especially my beloved World Cup. Damn Fifa 😭) 8y
ramblingsofareader @GriffinAndHerBooks I personally don't think the Olympics are sexist, but the sexism usually originates in specific countries/cultures that ban women from competing etc. Also; yes yes yes about Fifa! I love the Euros & World Cup, but I have a hard time with it being backed by such a corrupt organisation😒 8y
ImaginativeMom OK! @shawnmooney The IOC is ridiculously corrupt! That shouldn't reflect on the athletes, should it? Promise I'm looking at your view. @Miznanner Absolutely re wake of destruction, yet won't apply as much in Rio as stadium is already famous. @GriffinAndHerBooks @ramblingsofareader most women ever in these games including women from Saudi Arabia after IOC threatened to ban them if they didn't allow women in. Not an apologist! Looking for balance. 8y
shawnmooney @Miznanner @GriffinAndHerBooks @ramblingsofareader @ImaginativeMom I'm extremist, definitely, because I hate all sports not just the Olympics. So factor that in. I see no difference between Fifa & IOC and hope they all end up in prison. I have nothing to add to the comments already made about the sexism. As for the corruption not reflecting on the athletes, that is impossible as I see it. Look at how completely pervasive doping is. 8y
shawnmooney @Miznanner @GriffinAndHerBooks @ramblingsofareader @ImaginativeMom The athletes who don't dope can't win. The whole thing is a sick corporate corrupt debacle, to my mind. But do remember that I'm off the deep end in my hatred of sports, period. I greatly respect the fact that I'm in the minority: just as I'll never change my mind, I shaln't convert many to my depth of conviction. :) 8y
ImaginativeMom @shawnmooney I've always believed that it takes extremists on either side of an issue to make change. Thanks for opening the conversation. 😄👍🏼👏🏼 8y
ramblingsofareader @shawnmooney completely agree about the corruption of doping, especially in high profile athletics. The fact that the IAAF ban them for a few years and then let them compete again is beyond ridiculous. It sends out completely the wrong message about anti-doping, let alone thinking about the thousands of people that they are role models to. 8y
