4/5 🌟

This short, intriguing and brilliantly crafted novel follows a family's grief after the brutal murder of a young girl, told through three perspectives. As the victim's sister seeks closure years later, the story reveals the impact and consequences left behind.

A fast read, Kwon‘s Lemon is the story of a murder and how that act reverberates through time. Told through multiple POVs—the victim‘s younger sister and the new wife of one of the original suspects—this is a story about how people process and move beyond, if they do, such a horrific tragedy. As such, it is not particularly interested in giving the reader a resolution focusing instead on how the survivors reach theirs. An entertaining read.

Lemon was our February pick for Fountain Faraway book club (books in translation) and this was a great read! I really enjoyed this unusual thriller that the reader has to piece together. It was really good and the discussion was even better!

This didn‘t work well as an audiobook for me. Despite multiple narrators, I had trouble following the jumps in time, perspective, and plot. This slim novel definitely packs a punch, but I had to read an online guide to have it make sense. If I had more time, I‘d probably fall down a rabbit hole of the South Korean “high school beauty murders” on which it is based. Definitely some Adnan Sayed vibes. Still a so-so as an #audiobook.

BarbaraBB That rabbit hole sounds tempting. Thanks for tagging me in your review. I think I‘ll wait for a while 3y

Finished this #Netgalley audiobook while working out this morning. In the years following an unsolved murder of a high school girl. It was listed as a thriller mystery, but there were no thrills here. It was very slow moving, and I ended up giving it two stars.

#TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon

RaeLovesToRead Was the mystery decent despite it being slow and unthrilling? 3y
Clwojick @RaeLovesToRead there was no real answer to the mystery… so I didn‘t get much out of it. 3y
RaeLovesToRead Ah that's rubbish! Will avoid 😄 3y

Listened to this short crime novel on #audiobook I recommend that format (read by cast) because I think following who is speaking when might me confusing in print. Not really a mystery but more about the characters and how they interact and develop. Even the smaller characters came to life (the police detective in the first scene) #ARC #Netgalley

Such a bumper season for new books. The tagged one caught my eye….literary crime novel exploring class and privilege in Korea 👍🏼

This short quirky Korean novel is billed as a thriller, but it‘s really not. There is a murder and we do explore whodunit but it‘s more a study of grief, and the meaning of life (and death).

The story is told from 3 different POVs, which made it difficult to follow sometimes but still a satisfying read.
