I can't...I just can't get myself to read this one. I'm about 50% through the book and I want to gouge my eyeballs out.

After nearly two weeks with this one, I'm waiving the white flag.

Back to the library it goes and onto the next book I go!

This was my September #BookSpin that I completed this past week. I don't remember reading this one before, but I really enjoyed it. Tom is adventurous and sometimes thoughtless, but goodhearted and likable on the whole.

I perfectly understand now why a teacher would recommend Tom Sawyer. If between you, there are people that want to start writing books I think a book like this will teach a good lesson. And actually all Mark Twain's works will do the work. They will teach common sense of writing, will teach you to be an observer, and also what it's not common sense in writing. As a wanting to be writer I would recommend it!

Nute I reread this book as an adult and I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it. Mark Twain is a talented storyteller. And he had a fabulous sense of humor. 4y
BeatrixNBooks Indeed he had. I'm still surprised that many people does not like him. 4y

I started to reread this book. I know it is mainly for children but I cannot help myself from laughing and reading. Give it a try! It will remind you about your childhood and will make you smile during hard times, I promise!😄🤭

Hope to have a merry banned books week. Sometimes I‘m just abashed by the reason they‘re banned. This one, for example; because Tom does not show good moral judgment. #literacyjoke #bannedbook #BannedBooksIveRead

Some day it may seem worth while to take up the story of the younger ones again and see what sort of men and women they turned out to be; therefore it will be wisest not to reveal any of that part of their lives at present.

I am so glad to be done with this book! I read along for a small book club with friends and boy I did not care for it. I hate to bail on a book so I made my way through it, but I don‘t see the appeal.

This is my first read of 2020. I‘ve been wanting to read this book, because the copy I have belonged to my dad. The tone of it definitely had a southern drawl to it. There were some parts though, where that southern drawl made me sleepy. But that didn‘t stop me from finishing this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I needed a break from my usual politics or audiobook while I rustle up dinner. Xfinity on demand came through—Frank Capra‘s Its a Wonderful Life. I kind of love that angel Clarence was reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer when he was called to help George Bailey.

I think this novel is a good reflection of past attitudes, (written in 1875 racism and sexism are on full display), and also serves to illustrate that we have not progressed nearly as far as one would hope. While I enjoyed the adventure story as much as I did in my early 20s, I found the social commentary and lack of progress to be unbearably sad and disappointing.

I‘ve been watching “Making It” on TV this week and realized that I like Nick Offerman‘s voice. I remembered that I had this audiobook narrated by him and hadn‘t read the book since high school or college. I‘m enjoying the narration, but boy is it problematic. I know, I know, one must consider the time in which it was written, but honestly, that just makes me feel worse about the history of the US. 🤦🏻‍♀️

This classic tale is one of Traditional literature's most famous. There is no denying the relevance whether you like the story or not. The adventure in the story is still one that children should hear, however newer editions of the story could be more appropriate.

Mark Twain: people either love him or hate him. I'm not sure where I stand, but I bought this lovely leather bound edition containing 5 novels while visiting one of the museums in Hannibal, MO last year. I believe I posted a pic of the cover then, but as I prepare to start reading, I wanted to share the beautiful sketch found on the inside of the cover. #readtheclassics #marktwain #tomsawyer #riverlife #mississippiriver

Did I really just enjoy this book? Am I surprised? I guess that I am, because I am reluctant to say it out loud. There are all of the detestable elements as tell signs of the era - racism, sexism, exploitation, disenfranchisement & Tom is a little ‘too much‘ all-American boy - pretentious, full of himself & an outright liar (ok, maybe just a fibber) & everyone around him is too gullible & there is a ‘syrupiness‘ dripping from many pages, BUT, 👇🏽

Nute oh my, it was a witty, colorful, descriptive slice of life.
I read as that and nothing more. Mark Twain deserves his accolades for his gift of storytelling. And one day I will follow-up with Huckleberry Finn‘s story.

I‘m not sure if I am excited about this, but it feels like it is supposed to be read. I should be able to say ‘Oh yeah, I did the Tom Sawyer-and-Huck Finn thing in childhood.‘ Truth be told, some parts of this story rings a clear bell, but I don‘t know why. Did I read it awhile back or am I remembering some film adaptation?🤔
Anyway, I‘m reading it now and liking it so far. Mark Twain‘s writing is very descriptive and surprisingly humorous.

MelissaSue81 Confession.. I definitely never read these in childhood, nor did I watch any adaptations. I haven‘t a clue what they are about. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve never read Tom Sawyer-Huck Finn either 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Erinreadsthebooks I've read Huck Finn but not Tom Sawyer. Tom's quite a turd at the end of Huck Finn. Not sure I want to read his story. 6y

Kind of as expected, this was... a book I finished. I read it because I wanted to understand a classic other people had read that I hadn‘t and it wasn‘t very me. I don‘t want to be judgmental about a book people love but reading it as an adult just didn‘t do it for me.

Nick Offerman is great, Twain‘s writing style is great, but holy racism and sexism batman. I also pretty much just thought Tom was an awful person.

Aunt Polly Deserved Better

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I did not enjoy Tom very much, but I liked Huck a bit more. But yes, both are definitely a product of their time. 6y
Emilymdxn @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read huck Finn when I was much younger and didn‘t notice much racism etc. which was probably the best way to appreciate it 6y
wanderinglynn I didn‘t care for it either. And not just because of the racism (of course, the book is very representative of the time). But even more basic, I simply didn‘t care for Twain‘s writing style. 6y
Emilymdxn @wanderinglynn I loved the style as it was read by Nick Offerman because it suited his voice incredibly well, but I might not have liked it if I‘d read the book without a narrator 6y

Making a start on this for #24b4monday - one of those ‘books everyone is meant to read‘ that I assumed I‘d get to at one point in my life then I saw it on sale and thought huh, guess that time is now. I doubt I‘ll adore it but I love Nick Offerman and I‘ll be ticking off a Great American Novel

This certainly hasn‘t aged well... unlike other kids classics like Anne or Pippi the notes of racism and sexism kind of overpower the childlike sense wonder. Luckily Nick Offermans narration compensates with a lot of underlying sarcasm. That man just knows his craft. The perfect choice for the #audiobook

Kimberlone Huckleberry Finn is a much better and more mature book. And calls Tom out on his behavior 6y
