The Family Plot: A Novel | Megan Collins

When a family obsessed with true crime gathers to bury their patriarch, horrifying secrets are exposed upon the discovery of another body in his grave in this chilling novel from the author of Behind the Red Door and The Winter Sister. At twenty-six, Dahlia Lighthouse has a lot to learn when it comes to the real world. Raised in a secluded island mansion deep in the woods and kept isolated by her true crime-obsessed parents, she has spent the last several years living on her own, but unable to move beyond her pastespecially the disappearance of her twin brother Andy when they were sixteen. With her fathers death, Dahlia returns to the house she has avoided for years. But as the rest of the Lighthouse family arrives for the memorial, a gruesome discovery is made: buried in the reserved plot is another bodyAndys, his skull split open with an ax. Each member of the family handles the revelation in unusual ways. Her brother Charlie pours his energy into creating a family memorial museum, highlighting their research into the lives of famous murder victims; her sister Tate forges ahead with her popular dioramas portraying crime scenes; and their mother affects a cheerfully domestic faade, becoming unrecognizable as the woman who performed murder reenactments for her children. As Dahlia grapples with her own grief and horror, she realizes that her eccentric family, and the mansion itself, may hold the answers to what happened to her twin. With her signature spellbinding, poignant, and atmospheric (Christina McDonald, USA TODAY bestselling author) storytelling, Megan Collins weaves a haunting and suspenseful tale filled with secrets that wont remain buried.

A mansion, embroidery, isolation, twinning, hidden hallways and doors, an axe, a man that saves and pets caterpillars, and lots of dioramas. It‘s certainly not groundbreaking or amazing, but it‘s pretty entertaining! If you think YOUR family is weird, abnormal and full of strange traditions and histories, wait until you read about this one. But be warned, you will hate the LMM acronym by the end of this book…just you wait and see.

Today‘s Prompt: ESSAYS

Oh to be famous, but not famous in the way everyone wants to be.

The Lighthouse family lived on Blackburn Island and was the most eccentric family anyone knew.

The children were home schooled by their mother, and she had them write “essays” about murders.

Good story with a good little twist at the end. I loved that the killer wasn‘t all the way out there but still a little unpredictable how it all went down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EadieB This is a dark, gripping thriller with fascinating characters who are named for true crime killers and those who have been killed. The story is told with Dahlia's POV and the plot is a creepy, twisted story with a shocking finale in the end. I'm looking forward to my next book by Megan Collins. If you like creepy, dark mystery, then you will love this book. 2y

Dahlia & her siblings were brought up isolated, homeschooled on murder documentaries & stories of serial killers. Her twin Andy was desperate to get away & begged her to leave with him until he finally ran away on their 16th birthday. Dahlia has tried to find him for 10 years years & when the kids are called home at their father's death she hopes he'll be there too. Instead his body is discovered (not a spoiler) in the plot meant for their ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ father. Who killed Andy? Could it have been the serial killer who stalked their island, killing multiple women over two decades, or was there yet another killer lurking in those woods? This family is creepy and I feel sorry for the remaining siblings, one in particular, but the story 2y
bookandbedandtea ⬆️ lacked something. I couldn't warm up to Dahlia so, since hers is the only POV we get, and she is estranged from her family, I didn't feel like I got to know the rest of the family. The resolution of one mystery wasn't much of a surprise but the other answer I didn't expect. 2y

Overall enjoyable with an engaging pace. I appreciated the character development and writing style. I did feel that some of the conclusions happened too quickly without a good lead up. Three solid stars and a promising start to my 2022 reading.

Dahlia grew up on an island pretty isolated except for her twin brother, Andy, who was her BFF. Her mother was interested and obsessed with true crime and raised her kids in this “culture”The people on the island think Dahlia‘s fam is pretty weird because they are all “obsessed with murder”. By the way, the island has a murderer that has been operating for years and no one has been able to catch him. This was a weird, quirky book but I liked it.

EvieBee This has been on my TBR but got bumped off for some reason. Adding to my spreadsheet. Thanks! 3y

A quick read with not a whole lot of substance. My second Megan Collins book & I'm not sure that her writing is for me. Dahlia, her twin brother, Andy, & two older siblings grew up in "Murder Mansion". Homeschooled & ostracized by the community, the siblings return after the death of their father. Everyone except Andy who has been missing for 10 years. How are Murder Mansion, Andy, & a serial killer linked? Is it too late to solve the mystery? ⭐⭐⭐

A psychological thriller with gothic atmosphere & cultish feel. I enjoyed the writing & setting quite a bit. The characters were okay, but seemed over the top & not fully fleshed out. The pacing was solid & the story moved well. I didn't feel bored. The suspense was good, but the plot can be slightly predictable. Still, there was a good twist that wrenched my stomach hard. The ending didn't pack a punch, but it worked & wrapped things up nicely.

The Family Plot is a murder mystery novel about a family who spent most of their lives studying different American murders from their isolated island mansion. They reunite to bury their father and their own darkest secrets will be brought to light. This is a dark and tragic family story drenched in the history of some of America‘s most famous murders. I recommend it to people that enjoy mysteries with complicated family dynamics 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Oh to be famous, but not famous in the way everyone wants to be.

THE FAMILY PLOT can definitely be classified as Gothic and odd, but it will keep your interest because you will want to see what really was going on in this household for all those years.

The most unique story line I have ever read.

I found the beginning a little slow. It took about 1/3rd of the book before I began to feel invested in the mystery. The ending was a wild ride. So many emotions. Just when you think you have it figured out, new facts emerge that change your theory. The last 25% of the book flew by so fast for me. I had to keep reading to see what would happen next. The person I thought might be Andy's killer was not. I had it all wrong. This was an enjoyable book.
