Maeve's strangely astute tarot readings make her the talk of the school, until a classmate draws a chilling and unfamiliar card--and then disappears. After Maeve finds a pack of tarot cards while cleaning out a closet during her in-school suspension, she quickly becomes the most sought-after diviner at St. Bernadette's Catholic school. But when Maeve's ex-best friend, Lily, draws an unsettling card called The Housekeeper that Maeve has never seen before, the session devolves into a heated argument that ends with Maeve wishing aloud that Lily would disappear. When Lily isn't at school the next Monday, Maeve learns her ex-friend has vanished without a trace. Shunned by her classmates and struggling to preserve a fledgling romance with Lily's gender-fluid sibling, Roe, Maeve must dig deep into her connection with the cards to search for clues the police cannot find--even if they lead to the terrifying Housekeeper herself. Set in an Irish town where the church's tight hold has loosened and new freedoms are trying to take root, this sharply contemporary story is witty, gripping, and tinged with mysticism.

5/5 ⭐️
Societal and political tensions in Ireland are high when Maeve discovers her unusual knack for tarot. Unknowingly, she plunges herself into a repeated story of loss and sacrifice. She, along with her group of outcasts, must work to free her ex-best friend from the realm of the unknown. I loved the Irish folklore, magic, and teenage angst in this book! Fast paced and entertaining.

Ok, so I read this book in 3 days, and it started off strong! But once I got to the final few chapters, the book lost some steam. The overall theme and motifs were riveting, though! And I am glad I read it…but the ending was a tad bit of a letdown. I would be open to reading the other 2 books in this series, as the writing style is really good…but the ending just left me flat and…meh.

I'm pretty sure that as an 11 year old I'd have been obsessed with this book. As an adult I have a slightly different appreciation of it but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot is fast moving & intriguing but parts are so obviously YA in a way I found cheesy & stale. But the mix of magic & teen angst was ultimately beguiling, winning extra points for featuring a non-binary, bisexual character & diverse female characters. Very entertaining.

Much more dark and twisty than the fluffy book jacket makes it out to be. A fantastic read for tarot and Magick enthusiasts who love a good YA novel. I read it in a day and I'm sad that the sequel hasn't hit my library yet.

I'm really enjoying this book but some of the phrasing is just ... strange (see my post yesterday) Today, I encountered this. Again, the mother addressing her 16 year old daughter as "old beast". I just can't get a hold on what this character is supposed to be like.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks That is strange 🧐 3y

Just came across this turn of phrase. It's a mother addressing a 16 year old. It sounds pretty rude! Is this an Irish colloquialism? Forgive my ignorance, I've never encountered the phrase before.

BethM I‘ve never heard that either. 3y
Nelnjali I wonder if it is a typo and is supposed to be "beating"? 3y
Nelnjali Though I have definitely heard the phrase "chewed my a**," so it could be a version of that. 3y
wanderinglynn I agree with @Nelnjali – I think it must be a typo. 3y
LitStephanie That does sound weird. Agree it is probably supposed to be "beating." 3y

Just could not bring myself to read a sequel out of order so ordered the first one instead! Have to say, the covers on both are very striking.

This was listed as a YA, but for me it read more as a middle grade book. Not bad not good, but if this becomes a series I won‘t be reading the next one. The characters did not stick with me.

My #FallBeverage of choice is 🍎& I‘ve come to like SBUX Apple Crisp Macchiato lately. And I grabbed the last two Apple Crisp Wafers that my store carries every year that I‘m promptly going to dunk.😋

Picked up my hold (False Witness) & found a couple other Halloween-ish books, saw the #hallowreadaroundtheworld bookmark & signed up for the ⬇️

DebinHawaii … library Halloween reading challenge. Since I was already tracking my reading through Beanstack for summer & kept it up for the #readathons it nicely credited my time since October 1. 🤗 Looking forward to adding more points to #teamhendrix 3y

This spooky young adult novel is set in Ireland and features a mysterious set of tarot cards. I really enjoyed the main character‘s voice and narration, the LGBTQ+ representation, the social and political and personal themes, and especially learning about tarot and witchcraft alongside Maeve. A touch slow on the pacing at times, but really realistic for the age of the characters. Looking forward to the next in the series which comes out next year!

I enjoyed this more than I originally expected to! Didn't love that the ending was definitely sequel bait, but Maeve's journey and the development of the witchcraft was so good. #yafantasy #kinda

Enjoyed the teen angst, maybe not so much the teen drama. I live new witches books, a teen discovering her power and creating a coven. Of course it‘s book one. I wish there were less books in series. I hate being left hanging. But I did very much enjoy this.

No idea what this book is about. Never even heard of it until Wednesday when I gathered the graphics. But this tarot card cover says I need to read it. How about you?

I was very excited to read this book because it focuses on tarot and I recently just learned how to read tarot.

Speaking of tarot, I liked how there were pictures of the tarot cards scattered throughout the book. I think that is so helpful for readers who may not be familiar with tarot cards and what each card looks like.

A great book about a young student discovering she is a witch. I liked the way the tarot was presented. It seemed very accessible. This book features an epic battle between good and evil that appears will be ongoing. There is definitely more of this story to be told, and I would like to see more of Maeve, Roe and Fiona. I could do without Lily but it looks like she will stick around. This book was fun and entertaining. I am glad I read it.
