This Census-Taker | China Miéville
For readers of George Saunders, Kelly Link, David Mitchell, and Karen Russell, This Census-Taker is a stunning, uncanny, and profoundly moving novella from multiple-award-winning and bestselling author China Miéville.   In a remote house on a hilltop, a lonely boy witnesses a profoundly traumatic event. He tries—and fails—to flee. Left alone with his increasingly deranged parent, he dreams of safety, of joining the other children in the town below, of escape.   When at last a stranger knocks at his door, the boy senses that his days of isolation might be over.   But by what authority does this man keep the meticulous records he carries? What is the purpose behind his questions? Is he friend? Enemy? Or something else altogether?   Filled with beauty, terror, and strangeness, This Census-Taker is a poignant and riveting exploration of memory and identity.Advance praise for This Census-Taker   “A thought-provoking fairy tale for adults . . . [This Census-Taker] resembles the narrative style, quirkiness, and plotting found in the works of Karen Russell, Aimee Bender, or Steven Millhauser.”—Booklist   “Brief and dreamlike . . . a deceptively simple story whose plot could be taken as a symbolic representation of an aspect of humanity as big as an entire society and as small as a single soul.”—Kirkus ReviewsPraise for China Miéville   “Even when he is orbiting somewhere in a galaxy too far away for normal human comprehension . . . Miéville is dazzling.”—The New York Times   “[Miéville’s] wit dazzles, his humour is lively, and the pure vitality of his imagination is astonishing.”—Ursula K. Le GuinFrom the Hardcover edition.

This is a real Mieville story, even if the cover and the publishing house suggest otherwise. I'd recommend it to people who already know, what the author is up to, because otherwise you might be confused and disappointed.

Well, the reader gets confused anyway. It's still a Mieville after all. So I do need to reread this book, because there's just to much to take in in only one sitting. One might not guess that since it's a such a short book, ⬇

Jari-chan but there's so much left unsaid, so much symbolism, so many secrets... So much to discover and unreveal.

Beautiful in an unexpected way. Brilliant written with tight language and surprising imagery. The allusions are really chilling but clever too. Reminded me a bit of Jim Crace but even better(is that possible?!)

Things came together in the end of this New Weird Mystery novella, but I still had to go back to a few passages to get some clarity. I wasn‘t keen on the MC‘s use of POV3 when referring to himself as a boy (POV1 & POV3 often in the same sentence) nor the lack of clarity for most of the book nor the enigmatic symbolism which smacks close to pretentiousness.

Moray_Reads Is this your first by China Miéville? I'm a big fan but this is the only one of his I actively disliked 6y
Dogearedcopy @Moray_Reads It is my first Miéville! But I‘m not put off by this one enough to give up on exploring more of his work (In particular, I would like to check out ‘Kraken‘ and ‘The City & The City.‘) I see from some other comments/reviews that this is not his best offering. (edited) 6y
Moray_Reads @Dogearedcopy love both of those. Also recommend The Last Days of New Paris if you want something a little shorter! 6y

I bought this first-run first edition hardback at the Dollar Store!

As pleased as I am to get a great deal, I would be lying if I said I knew what was going on in this novella. I‘m 60/208 pages in and all I know it that it‘s dark and unsettling and set in a Gaiman-esque other world, possibly post-apocalyptic. A boy *may* have seen one of his parents kill the other?

rwmg Currently reading "EmbassyTown". It did take me a while to get my bearings 6y

I‘ve wanted to try something by Miéville for a long time, and thanks to a recommendation...decided to start with this. Haven‘t been able to focus on reading for a few weeks now....mostly due to massive amounts of work related stress, so wish me luck that I‘m able to get into this one.

Intriguing, vague and addictive. A book about trauma, memory, fear, deprivation and abandonment. Most importantly, it's about the construction of one's life narrative and the need to share it.

My first delve in Miéville's work, sinister and interesting prose. It initially feels off, the way the story goes between first and third person, but the disconnected feeling suits.

Did I miss something, overlook some subtle detail that answered the questions still swirling around in my head? The worlds created by Mieville are complicated, intricate and utterly absorbing, but not this one.I couldn't get a handle on the parameters here. I wish any of the short stories in Three Moments of an Explosion had been the point of departure for a novella, as those worlds were unique and utterly original.

#TBRtemptation post! Any Miéville fans? I don't know what to make of the summary of this novella, it's rather vague and mysterious, which isn't a bad thing. Intriguing though. A war-torn dystopian world of decimated cities. A boy is left alone on a mountaintop with a deranged parent. A stranger appears out of the quiet with all kinds of numbered records. Like "Bird Box", things are kept purposely vague. Interesting... #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Seonjoon I have so many ? for Miéville. This is on my #TBR; I'm in the middle of Three Moments right now. My partner read this and said it was ok, not his best but also far from bad... 8y

Mehso-so

This was confusing, and I'm feeling ambivalent. I was mesmerised in parts, just to be jolted back out. Some things become clear, or at least less foggy, by the end of the 140p novella, but we are still left guessing about a lot of things. The reveal at the end I had worked out, and what I hadn't worked out was kept hidden. I also felt like the story was ending just as I was starting to see the outline of the world it was set in.

Spiderfelt What was the reveal at the end? I finished the book, but didn't find any questions were answered in a satisfying way. 8y

I am a fan of China Mieville. He is very good at world-building, and creates vivid images which stay with me. He also has a joy with language, and word play. This novel, although much shorter than his previous books, is a beautifully crafted thing, and dense with images and character.

Loved this book when I started it, but quickly had to set it aside as life (and other books) got in the way. The book lost me when I finally was able to read it again. Should I step away and come back to it with fresh eyes? Or bail for well and good?

CherylDeFranceschi It's obtuse and moody, mostly. But it is China, and it is filled with his gorgeous prose. I really liked it, but by no means a favorite. 8y
Titania @CherylDeFranceschi That's helpful. I have only read Kraken by Mieville (loved it). Maybe will move on to another of his books instead of revisiting this one. 8y

This book was my first Mieville, and while I'm not sure that it's the best example of this author's work - based on what I've been told - it was pretty damn interesting. It was dark, twisted, and just real enough to be deeply disturbing. In my book, that's not a bad thing. (Audio)
