Blade of Secrets | Tricia Levenseller
50 posts | 24 read | 20 to read
In Blade of Secrets, the first book in Tricia Levenseller's exciting new YA fantasy duology, a teenage blacksmith with social anxiety is forced to go on the run to protect the world from the most powerful magical sword she's ever made. Eighteen-year-old Ziva prefers metal to people. She spends her days tucked away in her forge, safe from society and the anxiety it causes her, using her magical gift to craft unique weapons imbued with power. Then Ziva receives a commission from a powerful warlord, and the result is a sword capable of stealing its victims secrets. A sword that can cut far deeper than the length of its blade. A sword with the strength to topple kingdoms. When Ziva learns of the warlord's intentions to use the weapon to enslave all the world under her rule, she takes her sister and flees. Four companions--a blacksmith, a mercenary, a scholar, and an aspiring warrior--set out on a quest to keep the sword safe until they can find a worthy wielder or a way to destroy it entirely.

TLuvs I really enjoyed the FMC, she was different then the average, with overwhelming anxiety. But TL played beautifully to the cast of characters and set a steadily progressing plot. Considering this is a first in a series, it didn't feel like a "set-up" book, it could have been a stand alone were it not for the very end. I'm definitely going to read the next book to see where this story goes! 1y

Levenseller is always a hit for me! She writes fast paced, fun fantasy stories, and I‘m always instantly swept up in them.
This story features two sisters, two love interests, a life-or-death quest, and so many twists & turns - what‘s not to love?
Looking forward to jumping into book 2 soon!

This is 100% true and many people need to learn to understand this. He goes on to have a fit but his parents end up believing her. She also meets Warlord Kymora Avedin during this time. She can't be trusted and I also found it funny Ansel didn't get his way.

By far, my favorite aspect of this novel was the way in which Levenseller portrayed Ziva‘s social anxiety. Mainly for that reason, Ziva was my favorite character because she was so relatable. Similarly, I also appreciated the way the other characters in the novel treated Ziva‘s anxiety. Everything else about the novel was wonderful too! The romance was perfect and the plot flowed, as always!

This book and it's cover were both amazing. Thank you to Bookishfirst for sending me a copy of it to review.

The book starts off as Ziva a magical bladesmoth dealing with a Karen customer who hurt himself on his blade.

Quote: "It's not nearly as hurt as your pride else you would be at a healers and not here." Page 5. I agree this is very true and he is acting like a two year old which I found hilarious.

RavenclawPrincess913 Quote: "How can a man who injures himself with his own weapon be dangerous?" Page 7. This had me laughing.

Than the story went on to Ziva meeting Petrik who specializes in ancient magic and wants her help writing the book he's working on. He's an important character in this book so pay attention. I didn't trust him at first he gave bad vibes but in the end he was on Zivas side.

2y
RavenclawPrincess913 Quote: "This mace steals the breathe of surrounding enemies! It can kill without even touching an opponent, and yet it sits above the mantel as though it were a-a-decoration!" I agree I would have been mad to putting a good magical weapon to no use. Can just use a normal non-magicked mace for a decoration. 2y
RavenclawPrincess913 Ansel goes to try to kiss her and doesn't understand no means no. Quote: "You think saying a few nice words to me earns you a kiss? That's not how it works." This is 100% true and many people need to learn to understand this. He goes on to have a fit but his parents end up believing her. She also meets Warlord Kymora Avedin during this time. She can't be trusted and I also found it funny Ansel didn't get his way.

RavenclawPrincess913 When Ziva is making the sword for Kymora she sees Kellyn who is important in this story for the first time. The swords magic is made from her feelings for him and her telling it all her secrets. Which was amazing I loved it that part was intense. When showing Kymora it cuts Kymora and Ziva finds out she can hear the victims secrets when it cuts them.

Two of Kymoras secrets are:

RavenclawPrincess913 Quote "This weapon will make me unbeatable in combat." Which can be a good thing if your a good guy she's not.

Quote "I will crush Ghadra's pathetic rulers and reunite the regions under one rule once more: my own. The people will be enslaved to my will. The royal family will all bow before me. Right before I remove their heads." This is where I couldn't put it down. For the safety of her country and sister they decided to run. now.
2y
RavenclawPrincess913 Their journey was fun and interesting. I loved it. Ziva and Kellyn fall for each other and she finally opens up about her anxiety which I can relate to. I loved this story and can't wait to read the next one. It has an amazing but sad cliffhanger ending.

P.S. It's on my favorites shelf now.

Tricia Levenseller is a queen of witty banter. Many of the snappy comebacks between characters make me laugh out loud. That said, this was not my favorite of her books. It was good, but something felt a little off to me, and it ends very abruptly. Looks like the sequel comes out later this year.

Besides the banter, I enjoyed the sisters‘ relationship, and it was good to see anxiety portrayed too.

I have so many unread books on my shelves that are series starters. Many of them are getting sequels this year and rather than adding yet another book to my TBR shelf, I'm going to try to read what I have and decide if I actually WANT to continue the series.

I have a terrible completeness issue where I feel obligated to own every book in a series, even when I didn't particularly enjoy them. I'm running out of shelf space, so it needs to stop. 🤞

Mehso-so

When a smith mage creates a sword powered by secrets, she has to decide what she‘ll sacrifice to keep it from a dangerous warlord.

This was a fun read! I adore the magic-working-with-trade idea (Tamora Pierce‘s Emelan books), so I loved watching Ziva work her magic with her smithing. I liked how the romance was a bit of a slow burn. & I loved the sisters‘ relationship!

The ending felt too sequel bait-y to be really satisfying for me. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

1. Admittedly sometimes I do flick to the last few pages when reading books with love triangles so I don't get disappointed if my ship doesn't sail🤭

2. I definitely learned that social anxiety can be dealt with and overcome, and that some social situations aren't always so scary.

Tricia Levenseller has done it again, and written an absolutely brilliant book! I loved the plot, and the massive plot twists at the end that were so unexpected, I liked the world building and magic system. Ziva was a superb MC, her crippling social anxiety was written so well abs portrayed perfectly, her journey dealing with it was so inspirational. The sisterly bond was so sweet and loving, and I loved the double romance. Ends on a cliffhanger..
