Brief History of Seven Killings (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Brief History of Seven Killings (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Marlon James
Winner of the 2015 Man Booker Prize A recipient of the 2015 American Book Award One of the Top 10 Books of 2014 Michiko Kakutani, "The New York Times" A "New York Times Book Review" Notable Book Named a best book of the year by: "The New York Times" "Chicago Tribune" "The Washington Post" "The Boston Globe" "Time" "Newsweek" "The Huffington Post" "The Seattle Times" "The Houston Chronicle" "Publishers Weekly" "Library Journal" "Popsugar" "BookPage" "BuzzFeed Books" "Salon" "Kansas City Star" "L Magazine " A thrilling, ambitious . . . intense ("Los Angeles Times") novelthat explores the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the late 1970s. In "A Brief History of Seven Killings," Marlon James combines masterful storytelling with his unrivaled skill at characterization and his meticulous eye for detail to forge a novel of dazzling ambition and scope. On December 3, 1976, just before the Jamaican general election and two days before Bob Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica Concert to ease political tensions in Kingston, seven unnamed gunmen stormed the singer s house, machine guns blazing. The attack wounded Marley, his wife, and his manager, and injured several others. Little was officially released about the gunmen, but rumors abounded regarding the assassins fates. "A Brief History of Seven Killings" is James s fictional exploration of that dangerous and unstable time in Jamaica s history and beyond. Deftly spanning decades and continents and peopled with a wide range of characters assassins, drug dealers, journalists, and even ghosts James brings to life the people who walked the streets of 1970s Kingston, who dominated the crack houses of 1980s New York, and who reemerged into a radically altered Jamaica of the 1990s. Brilliantly inventive, "A Brief History of Seven Killings" is an exhilarating ("The New York Times") epic that s been called a tour de force ("The Wall Street Journal")."

Calling all Marlon James fans! His first step into writing/ producing television is a detective show where the title character is after a missing child. It's a 5-episode limited series that James uses to take all the detective/police show tropes he likes while throwing away anything predictable or stale, leaving only the good parts. It's intense, with a killer performance by Tamara Lawrence. On Max or Channel 4 in the UK. I highly recommend!

Ruthiella Sounds great. Did you ever listen to his podcast with his editor (or agent) Jake? It was delightful. I‘m sorry they are both too busy to continue. 1d
Billypar @Ruthiella I did! The two of them were a good pair - very entertaining. I didn't listen to all the episodes, but it's caused me to bump up Mrs. Caliban and Wide Sargasso Sea on my tbr. 15h

Wow! Powerful, stark, brutal, brilliant. This #chunkster shares a glimpse of Jamaica in the 60s-70s from multiple perspectives: a ghost, gangsters, journalists, the CIA, and a woman with various identities, following the story to NYC in the 80s. An epic examination of the impact that governments, criminals, and artists can have on a community that is just trying to get by. Dark and upsetting but worth it. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I am 300 pages in and I really don't know what is going on. There are so many characters, and while some of them have interesting stories many are just a mess. There is a ghost that just talks gibberish with lots of violence against women, and another who is also ranting which about 50 pages ago I started to skip. I am not even at the half way mark and I just don't want to anymore.

rockpools That sounds like a good reason to bail. 2y

If you can settle in to the lilting patois, spoken by over half of the book‘s 75 characters, in narrating a jumbled retelling of the epic history behind Jamaica‘s troubled years, you‘re in for an extraordinarily rich experience. A Brief History takes fictional freedom in investigating who were, and what became of, the seven mysterious gunmen who attempted to assassinate Bob Marley right before his Smile Jamaica peace concert on Dec. 5, 1976.

SamAnne This is sitting next to my book stand. On my list for this year. 2y

This was anything but brief! Whew! That was a wild ride. Definitely one to read rather than listen to. There‘s a large character list that I found myself frequently flipping to for the first hundred or so pages. I loved all the different perspectives and how James changes the writing style for different characters as well as situations! I did have to brush up on Jamaican politics in the 70‘s and I learned a lot about Jamaican history and culture.

RaeLovesToRead Could also be deceptive title 😉 2y

squirrelbrain Great review - I have this on my list for that prompt. 2y
Cortg @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain It was super challenging! The dialect, the characters, the different writing styles, the lack of quotation marks and sometimes the pages of one long, run on sentence 😂 I‘m glad I read it, loved it, and I‘m kinda proud of myself! 2y

Brief? No. Seven killings? More like 700 maybe. You know how sometimes you might go for a run, and when you start out, you're like, ugh why am I doing this? and then about a quarter of the way in, you're like, okay, maybe I'm kind of into this, but when it's over, you're like, oh I'm really glad I did that, but also thank god it's over? That is exactly the experience of reading this book.

A month after starting this one, I‘m right around the halfway point. Snuck off to the beach this morning for some uninterrupted reading. Life‘s been a little hectic and stressful lately so I‘m taking a little me time today.

Leniverse That's not the easiest book to read if you have a lot of distractions. But I do seem to remember moving through it faster in the second half, when you've gotten used to the writing style and know the characters and the dots are starting to get connected. 2y
Cortg @Leniverse Yes! I had to look back at the character list a lot in the beginning. I‘m doing better with the flow of the writing and the chapters are getting longer, which helps! ❤️ 2y
SamAnne This is on my list. My brother gave me a copy recently. But I‘m still recovering from his Black Leopard book. So amazing, well written, but of. The violence. (edited) 2y

I‘m starting this one today! I‘m a bit intimidated
1) because I tried the audio and had a hard time following the dialect AND characters
2) there‘s a FOUR PAGE character list at the beginning 😳
I‘m also super excited because I‘ve heard great things and I‘m in the need of a chunky, challenging read.

jenniferw88 @Cinfhen I agree with the challenging part, but I don't think print would have helped me either! I just wasn't invested enough in the characters, whereas I am with this one 3y

Not sure why I thought this would be any easier than Black Leopard, Red Wolf, but here we are.

willp13 That is very great it's my pleasure to meet you 5y
Uuchickinbrooklyn I loved Seven Killings, loved it, not sure why except James‘ characters are practically 4 dimensional. They don‘t stay in the book; they rent space in my head. No, they live rent-free...I don‘t want to dislodge them. Nina, Alex, Papa Lo, Bam Bam (poor Bam Bam!), even Josey Wales, most of them dreadful people facing awful choices...they shredded my nerves. At this point in my reading life I want to be devastated when I commit to a book. I was. 5y
Uuchickinbrooklyn But Brandi is right...James is a huge writer, but even his powerful enthusiasm didn‘t make Leopard, Wolf a pleasure to read. And he‘s writing a trilogy. So exactly: here we are! Did you read Night Women? Oh my God. 5y

Presented as fiction, this book is based on real political and economic upheaval and graphically real poverty and crime in Jamaica. At 686 pages, this hefty novel demands the reader's attention and finishing it felt like completing a mental marathon. Set in Jamaica & New York from 1976-1995, A Brief History follows the lives of Jamaican gangsters, a young woman who witnesses their assassination attempt on Bob Marley, an American journalist, a CIA agent, a ghost, etc. It's a lot, and definitely not for the squeamish. An absorbing story of power, violence and missed opportunity.

Preparing for my first book purge of 2019! On the stack are:
-A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James
-The Illegal by Lawrence Hill
-Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway
-SS-GB by Len Deighton.

The theme is books that I (unfortunately) could not finish, most of them early on.

These books are going to my local library and will most likely end up in their used bookstore at the central branch or at the yearly book sale.
