Axiom's End
Axiom's End: A Novel | Lindsay Ellis
The alternate history first contact adventure Axiom's End is an extraordinary debut from Hugo finalist and video essayist Lindsay Ellis. Truth is a human right. Its fall 2007. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact. Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. Even though Cora hasnt spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the Internet, the paparazzi, and the governmentand with him in hiding, that attention is on her. She neither knows nor cares whether her fathers leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with himuntil she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades. Realizing the extent to which both she and the public have been lied to, she sets out to gather as much information as she can, and finds that the best way for her to uncover the truth is not as a whistleblower, but as an intermediary. The alien presence has been completely uncommunicative until she convinces one of them that she can act as their interpreter, becoming the first and only human vessel of communication. Their otherworldly connection will change everything she thought she knew about being humanand could unleash a force more sinister than she ever imagined.

This first contact novel has an interesting perspective and an intriguing focus on linguistics and the challenges of communication. However, Cora, the young woman at the heart of the story, is incredibly passive for most of the book, manhandled and literally pushed around at every turn. When she finally takes action, the sequence felt forced and improbable to me. Probably still worth a read as high concept SF, but not quite a pick for me.

🎧 do you like Ancient Aliens? Alien conspiracy theories? Strong YA female MCs? A military/CIA presence?

This is a story of an alternate earth where a young struggling 20-something grows through her contact (Earth‘s first contact) with one specific alien.

There‘s some slight technical issues but I loved the book! Scratched that alien itch. Added book 2 to my TBR! I‘m a little surprised at how much I liked it.

For first 200 pages, I was utterly hooked and so into this book! It was an amazing introduction with an awesome premise and great pacing and action. Lots of wit and some great first person narration. Definitely a slow down by the middle though, which I slogged through a bit slower than I intended to. Not sure if I will do the second book or not.

I saw this one browsing at one of my favorite local bookstores (BookBar). One of the staff members was very enthusiastic so I grabbed it. This turned out to be a great choice. I love first contact stories and this is a good one. I‘ve even heard that the second in the series will be coming out soon.

This #audiobook is highly entertaining. But the ending makes me either not want to continue or to continue because I can't seem to look away. And that's all you're getting without spoilers.

Oh, and there's aliens 👽.

ShyBookOwl Haha I had a similar reaction to the ending. I cringed for sure, but I guess I'm a bit curious to see where it would go next. 3y

I'm so behind on reviewing things I've read! Gonna try to get caught up. First, is #lmpbc #groupv I wasn't a fan of some of some of the things that happened toward the end (vague bc spoilers), but overall I liked it a lot. I felt like the discussion about what it means to be human, and I enjoyed the action as a whole @booksellerofyourdiscontent @Hazel2019 @shadowspeak17

rjsthumbelina @booksellerofyourdiscontent did Axiom's End arrive for you? 4y
wisherwishinguponastar It has not arrived yet, but I have noticed a lot of mail is a few days off after last week‘s weather. My poor family keeps getting hounded when I get home because I have a handful of things coming for me. I just like happy mail... maybe a bit too much. 4y

Okay, I default to the "Hell Yeah" sticker a lot, but it's warranted here!
Confession: I didn't pay much attention when I heard about this book until I heard Abigail Thorn was one of readers. Came for that lovely human's performance and then wound up staying for one of the best and most riveting books I've ever read. Now I need to convince my dad to check this book out because he likes his sci-fi....

I‘m finally calling it quits. I made it to chapter 17, approximately 38%, and I just can‘t.

The writing is atrocious, the characters are bland, and the book reads like an eleven-year-old writing fanfic. This book needed a good editor, but clearly the publishing house just figured her large fan base from her day job would buy it as is (and apparently they have).

My complete review is on GR.

eeclayton I haven't read this particular book, but I agree each author should be properly edited, even the ones who have already made a name for themselves. 4y

So I read the bulk of this book while working the polls for the US November election, and it was a great distraction. It's sort of Bumblebee the movie meets Arrival, with a dash of Anathem. I liked the protag, and I was pretty much on the edge of my seat to learn things about our interstellar Interlopers, and out of nerves for what was going to happen to the main characters. Very Solid. Also liked the linguistics. #scifi, #aliens,

1. Tagged, An Unkindness of Ghosts, A Cold Case In Spell & my library book, Because of Miss Bridgerton, which is due back in a week & people are waiting so I can‘t renew it. Of course I technically haven‘t started any of these and it‘s already Jan 3. I‘d feel guilty about that but I‘m too lazy to care right now. 🥱😆

2. Dancing at Midnight

3. I set my GR annual goal to 104.

AlaMich Have you read any of the original Bridgerton book series? I just finished the Netflix series and really enjoyed it. I‘m not big on the romance genre but the show did make me think about reading the books. 4y
wanderinglynn @AlaMich not yet because there‘s a wait on them at my library. So I started with some of her other books. Typical romance, entertaining and easy reads. 4y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 1. Drums of Autumn 2. Voyager 3. I‘ll probably be happy with whatever result I end up with. This year, I‘m actually keeping track. Haven‘t done that since elementary school, when Summer Reading Goals was a competition that resulted in a trip to Pizza Hut. 4y

Oh my gosh, @Hazel2019 , it actually got here! I called my apartment office asking about it and they said whenever this sort of thing happens, they give the mailman the correct apartment number so he can get it to the right person. I‘ve been checking the mail and it hasn‘t been there, but I gave it another check today and there it was! I kind of can‘t believe it. I‘ve watched the newest episode of Great British Baking Show, and now I‘m trying to get some reading in, but I‘d really rather go to sleep. What has happened to me, going to bed at 10:00 on a Friday night?! The girls are usually waking up right about now, to chase and savagely attack each other. The story follows Cora, a college dropout who‘s life is a mess and yet still finds herself in the middle of alien conspiracy.

I‘m more of a fantasy person than a sci-fi but I thought this was a very fun book. I do read a lot of comics and I thought the take on aliens and the main plot of the book was still read unique. I had to read it in a day because of poor time management 😂 but I probably would have done that regardless.

Axiom's End pulled me in right from the start, and never let go. I, honestly, had not been expecting to like this book nearly as much as I did. Ellis writes a well developed main character in Cora, and is able to emphasize family dynamics and relationships without straying from the alien storyline. Ellis also mixes in a perfect amount of 2007 politics and government, making the first contact feel very plausible.
