No man can resist Jemma's sensuous allure . . . Except her own husband! Wedding bells celebrating the arranged marriage between the lovely Duchess of Beaumont and her staid, imperturbable duke had scarcely fallen silent when a shocking discovery sent Jemma running from the ducal mansion. For the next nine years she cavorted abroad, creating one delicious scandal after another (if one is to believe the rumors). Elijah, Duke of Beaumont, did believe those rumors. But the handsome duke needs an heir, so he summons his seductive wife home. Jemma laughs at Elijah's cool eyes and icy heart—but to her secret shock, she doesn't share his feelings. In fact, she wants the impossible: her husband's heart at her feet. But what manner of seduction will make a man fall desperately in love . . . with his own wife?

Hard to feel the romance with this reluctant lead

Meh. I‘ve liked the other 3 Eloisa James books I‘ve read, but this one felt like it should‘ve been a novella. Not enough plot, and annoying how the hero and heroine didn‘t actually talk to each other much. 🙄 #jesshowreads2018

I decided to try out a romance novel, since that's not a genre I have experience with. This is the exact moment when I put my Kindle down and decided I couldn't finish the novel. Tell me I'm not the only one that finds this passage super creepy and not at all attractive!

KCorter Yikes! 8y
ReadingSusan Yes I find a lot of romance novels have MCs that I would consider abusive. 8y
TheBookAddict 😳😳😳 how is that romantic? 8y

Caterina @ReadingSusan Ugh, that's so not sexy at all. :/ Do you know of any that depict healthy relationships? 8y
leslieisreading Healthy relationship recs - my go-to romance authors are Courtney Milan and Tessa Dare, and most books by either of them would probably be pretty good in this department. But actually the specific rec that comes to mind is Sweet Disorder by Rose Lerner. 8y
Books88 Yeah... No 8y
Joanne1 Yuck!! Romance is not my thing either!! 8y
cathysaid "She had no choice"?!?!? Hell. To. The. No. But kudos to you for trying a new genre! 8y
awishman I heard the author speak last month. She did speak about how current affairs impacts her historical romance writing and noted how in her most recent book she added consent, even though in the time the book was written, consent did not legally exist. I thought it was interesting. 8y
tea.n.books @awishman I call bs on that.. Just because it legally doesn't exist doesn't mean people didn't know it was shitty behavior. Conan Doyle worked it into Sherlock Holmes ffs! 8y
awishman I don't want to argue or condone bad behavior. I was just trying to add a perspective I had recently heard and thought was interesting from the author herself. 8y

Historical romance is generally not my "thing." I began listening to these bc I'll be at a reader's conference where @EloisaJames will be present. These books are superb. The artful subplot is equally engaging and important as the relationship. There is extraordinary balance. I find myself deeply rooting for or despising some characters. Currently my heart is breaking- please don't let Elijah die...

EloisaJames Thank you for this lovely compliment, Beth!! Please come up and say hi--are you going to Spokane? 8y
BethM @EloisaJames of course! No, I will be at Barbara Vey in Milwaukee. 8y

Sitting in the car halfway through. I think Elijah is my favorite duke so far. #escape
