I also would ask students how they managed to pull themselves up and who helped them along the way. I may also ask students how they think Esperanza was feeling when she was going through this hard time.

This book helps students see the reality of the Great Depression and the hardships people went through during those times. This book can help connect history content to ELA. It also helps children learn that things may not always be the way they are now.

This book is very eye opening and would be great for older elementary aged children. The fictional aspect makes it very engaging while also relaying important details.

It was during the great depression and she has to work on a farm and tells how hard it is for people of color in America. I would read this to my class if it is age appropriate because i think it would be good to have them be aware of this.
