The epigraph already has me hooked!
Just meh. Didn't really connect with the story. Honestly don't know why it was on my TBR shelf to begin with... Thought reading it would spark memories of someone recommending or discussing the book but that didn't prove to work. Didn't dislike all the dialog and dating merits, but won't likely leave a lasting impression. Really disliked the cover.
This is exactly what you might expect from Hornby. A compelling story about ordinary people in ordinary situations, with a somewhat open but very believable ending. The climax felt quite anticlimactic for me, but the inner monologues of the main characters more than made up for it. Not his best book but a great read nevertheless.
My current read is just perfect for today's #CuriousCovers

Deciding to forgive, after all, was not the same thing as forgiveness 👩🏻🤝👨🏾
The first half was pretty good, but then it changed gears and also slowed down. Nothing ground-breaking and also not as witty as I expected from Hornby.
Listened to this one on #audiobook
Was ok but nothing that really wowed me. The characters were underwhelming and there was not much plot.
British, conversational, not-too-deep. These are the descriptors that come to mind right off the top of my head. Nothing earth-shattering here for me; an older woman and younger man try to make a relationship work. Other differences are also present — different races and careers play into things for the two. A pleasant enough book between deeper reads.
It‘s the final day of #TexasBookFestival 😁📚
All of the panels are available to watch until the end of November though, so you haven‘t missed out yet!
I plan to watch several of these today, but I‘m most looking forward to Nick Hornby, as I‘ve enjoyed Ten Years in the Tub and have High Fidelity sitting in my TBR shelf.
I‘m also excited for the Texas Debut authors, I usually end up adding some of them to my TBR.
10-24-20: My 88th finished book of 2020! Set in Britain in 2016, around the time of Brexit, Lucy, a 42 year old mom of 2 going through a divorce, meets Joseph, 22. What follows is a surprising love story. There‘s a lot riding against these two, not just the age difference, but it shows that “sometimes the person who can make you happiest is the one you least expect.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #justlikeyou #nickhornby 👍🏼📖#️⃣8️⃣8️⃣
A timely novel, with all the charm that you are used to from Hornby.

I was really excited about this book but sadly it did not live up to my expectations. The story of a couple who are trying to make things work despite differences in age, race, education, socioeconomic status, and basic interests, and also Brexit. Hornby never made me understand why they even want to be together to begin with much less want to keep trying. It wasn‘t a bad book but nothing ever coalesced for me and it all felt lacking in depth.
Nick Hornby is one of my favorite authors. This isn't his best work, IMHO, but he doesn't write anything bad. It took me a while to get into the story. Once in, I cared about Lucy & Joseph (and Lucy's boys). The integration of relatively recent events (Brexit, primarily; the 2016 USA presidential election to a much lesser degree) was interesting.
Does Nick Horny write the best "women's fiction" aka "chick lit"? Maybe, even if this wasn't one of my favorites. It takes two people who it's hard to imagine together and plays with the idea of them trying to make it work anyway, despite racial and gender differences, Brexit and Trump landscape, different socio-economic backgrounds, oh yeah and a huge age difference. It was a bit of a slog at times but I was glad I read to the end.
#TBRtemptation post 2! Just released! Lucy married a man who was a lot like her: same age, background, ambitions. 20-ish years later, as a teacher with two sons, they‘re close to divorce. Then she meets a guy at the butcher shop—quite a bit younger, different class and culture—who might make a great babysitter. And something more? Sounds interesting! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
