The Love Story of Missy Carmichael
The Love Story of Missy Carmichael | Beth Morrey
13 posts | 15 read | 24 to read
For readers of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and A Man Called Ove, a life-affirming, deeply moving "coming-of-old" story, a celebration of how ordinary days are made extraordinary through friendship, family, and the power of forgiving yourself--at any age. Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. Woman meets dog... The world has changed around Missy Carmichael. At seventy-nine, she's estranged from her daughter, her son and only grandson live across the world in Australia, and her great love is gone. Missy spends her days with a sip of sherry, scrubbing the kitchen in her big empty house and reliving her past--though it's her mistakes, and secrets, that she allows to shine brightest. The last thing Missy expects is for two perfect strangers and one spirited dog to break through her prickly exterior and show Missy just how much love she still has to give. Filled with wry laughter and deep insights into the stories we tell ourselves, The Love Story of Missy Carmichael shows us it's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. It's never too late to love.

I found the pace of this book to be quite slow, however, I wouldn‘t consider that to be a negative! It was a beautifully written story with wonderful, realistic characters and relationships. Rather than rushing through it, I took my time and truly enjoyed reading it.

A beautiful story. It gives me hope for a fulfilling life after the kids are grown and moved out.

I really liked this book. Elderly Missy lives alone in a big house with no one to talk to until a dog sitting gig broadens her world. Little by little she lets others in, and starts to let go of the past. #WinterGames2020 #ReadNoseReindeer

Almost bailed on this one but after reading some reviews that stated it picks up in the middle I decided to give it another go. I‘m so glad that I did! It was adorable ♥️

I enjoyed this book. Missy is going through a hard time. It speaks to the value of allowing people in and also to being there for them. There are a fun cast of characters including a wonderful female dog named Bob. It is a debut novel which sometimes are my favorites.

I don‘t know if this was just my mood or what, but there was a plot turn in this book that left me sobbing. Not really in a good cathartic way, more in an “I‘m upset the author did that” way. By the end, I wasn‘t sure whether I liked it or not. There were parts of the story that were really heartwarming as Missy goes from being a loner in her big house to finding a group of human and canine friends. I felt invested in the characters but let down.

This was such a sweet book. Missy is 79,living alone with all of her memories, and feeling removed from both of her children. Her life changes when she unexpectedly finds herself taking care of a stranger‘s dog. She has never liked dogs but having one forces her out into the world where she finds friendship and purpose combined with the unconditional love that a four legged friend provides.

Suet624 Sounds sweet. Having a dog will do that to you. 4y

Others have compared this to Eleanor Oliphant and A Man Called Ove (the former I disliked; the latter I liked very much). I found Missy Carmichael to land in between. It is a woman's late-in-life reentry into a full life and new or rekindled relationships.

This is a mostly pleasant read & one that I can clearly see comparisons to Eleanor Oliphant & Ove, as the titular character is, at the start, a rather isolated woman living alone. But after a chance encounter at the park & agreeing to temporarily take in a dog, Missy starts forging new connections at the age of 79. While not always likable, Missy‘s story is engaging & though I didn‘t have quite the emotional connection I expected, I liked it!

Crazeedi Nice review! And adore the puppy ❤🐶❤ 5y

We meet Missy, a seventy-nine year old widow who has had satisfying life. She was married to Leo, raised two kids, and was a librarian. As this book starts we are in current times and things are not going so well. She is estranged from her daughter and her son has moved far away. Throughout this book Missy reflects on her life. Dating, meeting and falling in love with her husband. And of course having her children and all the ups and downs.
