Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife
Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife: Pride and Prejudice Continues | Linda Berdoll
What readers are saying "Whoa, Darcy!" "Some parts are hilarious and some a walk on the wild side for Austen characters. Curl up and enjoy!" "Tells the tale I always wanted to hear...how the Darcys lived happily ever after..." "The only fault I found with this book was that it ended." Every woman wants to be Elizabeth Bennet Darcy-beautiful, gracious, universally admired, strong, daring and outspoken-a thoroughly modern woman in crinolines. And every woman will fall madly in love with Mr. Darcy-tall, dark and handsome, a nobleman and a heartthrob whose virility is matched only by his utter devotion to his wife. Their passion is consuming and idyllic-essentially, they can't keep their hands off each other-through a sweeping tale of adventure and misadventure, human folly and numerous mysteries of parentage. Hold on to your bonnets! This sexy, epic, hilarious, poignant and romantic sequel to Pride and Prejudice goes far beyond Jane Austen.

Bailedbailed

I was hoping this would be amusing, and it was at first, but it is just boring and petty. The witty observations and repartee of Pride and Prejudice are traded for clumsy innuendos and euphemisms. I did not even find the numerous sex scenes very sexy. Dialog and description were both unskillful, and the plot is slow, scattered, and smallish. I threw in the towel at 95 pages.

Wickham on Lydia: "Looking again to his wife, he then just as hastily looked away, not wanting to invite her conversation. She was licking the last residue of chocolate from her fingertips with no less noise than a cow sucking it's foot from the mud. He prayed that her indecorous desire for bonbons was the source of her ever-increasing girth and she was not with child, for a wailing infant would be the last straw upon his ill-temper." ?

LitStephanie #pemberlittens, anyone read this one? I just started, but it's pretty amusing so far. 3y

I love a P&P spin off so I don‘t regret reading it, but some of the directions this author went with beloved characters I didn‘t enjoy. Actually, the direction she went with most of the the past characters I didn‘t enjoy. It was also very dark at times and I usually go to a Jane Austen book or spin off to escape from that. The best part of the book was the continuation of the Lizzy & Darcy love story in my opinion.

I honestly can‘t believe I finished this book, but after bitching about it for a solid week to @HOTPock3tt I felt like I had to.

Reasons not to read it:

1. Unnecessarily complicated language. Verbose is an understatement: this author needs to put down the thesaurus and step away slowly.

2. Austen‘s characters are largely unrecognizable, with the possible exception of Lizzy.

3. Could have been a lot sexier if it wasn‘t going to be good.😂

⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain An example of the bitched-about writing: ‘Thereupon, they embarked upon an ever-increasing exploration of the possibilities of aqueous achievement. This investigation was vehement, hence, water sloshed, then spilt onto the floor. A misfortune, for when those possibilities were discovered to be limited, he endeavoured to pick her up and carry her dripping to their bed.‘ I‘m all for good prose, but that‘s A LOT to say they got it on in the bath. (edited) 4y
batsy "Possibilities of aqueous achievement" ...?? ?? 4y
meghathecloud I bailed on it for similar reasons a few years back! Completely agree about the writing. 4y

Leftcoastzen ☹️🙄😬 4y
i.besteph Lol! I love how you described the author‘s writing. 😂😂😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks I had similar issues with this one - it's like she was trying to write the way she thought Austen would write but it just comes across as very pretentious. 4y
MicrobeMom Yeah... I bailed on this one. Good for you for finishing! 4y
HOTPock3tt 1) I am seriously LMAO right now! 😂 you nailed it and It‘s so true! THIS situation should teach me that if I bail the first time, then just leave.it.alone 😶lol @sprainedbrain (edited) 4y
eeclayton @sprainedbrain I read the quoted passage twice and didn't understand all of it! 😂 4y
AnneCecilie No 3 is just hilarious 4y
ravenlee I usually say “I charge the author with gross abuse of a thesaurus!” and from the above passage this is a first-degree felony. 4y
sprainedbrain @meghathecloud @Wife @TheAromaofBooks @MicrobeMom I sort of got numb to the language after a while, but omg all of the pointless side stories and diversions annoyed me too. GR says this books is 465 pages, but I swear it was at least twice that. I really should have bailed. 😂 4y
sprainedbrain @ravenlee that‘s definitely what this is! 🤣 4y
sprainedbrain @batsy @LeahBergen I have the utmost respect for authors and want them to write their books! But omg I was MAD at this lady by the end of it. 😂 4y
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I can sum up the rest of the crap for you if you want to quit wasting your time. 😂 4y
HOTPock3tt I‘m still laughing at number 1! 😂 it‘s so true this book is ridiculous. I‘m going to try to hang in there a bit longer. I‘m at least enjoying the smutty scenes 😆 @sprainedbrain 4y
Michael_Gee 😆 Thank you for this. 4y
janeycanuck I‘m going to be retaining #3 for all my reviews where I don‘t like the book. ALL of them. 4y

Bailedbailed

If I could rate this book both "Pan" and "Bail" I would. I like Pride and Prejudice retelling/sequels or whatever. Most of them have a lot of sex in them and I don't mind. This book however. *sigh* It's just bad.
The author uses way too many *flowerly*words just to try and sound idk smart? Also, the story bounces all over from character to character from past to present. It's just convoluted. Don't waste your time.

[DELETED] 3803335244 Some p&p retells or sequels are just flops. Sadly 7y
TaylorMay @ForeverNerdy yeah I know. I was just so in the mood for a good (or at least decent one). Do you have any you can recommend? 7y

Major catching up on #backtoreading : Day 18, spin off love

Not sure if this is exactly a spin off...

DGRachel I read this ages ago. I can't remember if I liked it. 😱 This is why I keep a book journal now. 7y

This is an older book pairing the steamy nights of contemporary regency romances with our beloved Elizabeth and Darcy. So bad it's good for #maybookflowers #sobaditsgood #romantsy

My #faveJaneAusten reimagining is Berdoll's wonderful attempt to capture the years after Pride and Prejudice ends. Austen purists beware: There's a ton of sex. I personally loved it, especially since I couldn't get enough of Colin Firth in the BBC miniseries. These books are so much fun!💘💘💘#seasonsreadings2016

Libby1 Ooh! Saucy. What would Jane say? 😉 8y
Leelee08 @Libby1 Scandalous!😉😍 8y
raelaschoenherr I read these a long time ago...I may need to re-visit :) 8y

This is my Jane Austen shelf! I'm very picky about any P&P sequels or re-imaginings but this is a good one. The language is very similar, but there are quite a few sex scenes, which make some purists angry. I personally loved them and this series.

LivinginaLibrary I've been nervous about the P &P spin offs because there are so many I didn't know where to start but I'm adding this to my TBR 8y
Leelee08 @LivinginaLibrary I was too! But this series is really good. Very historical and romantic. 😍 8y
Yamich49 I will read just about any Jane Austen reimagining (even the bad ones) - I really enjoyed this one! 8y

Leelee08 @Yamich49 Lol...I'm with you on that!😀 8y
Laura317 Has anyone tried P&P and Zombies yet? I find myself strangely drawn to it. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Laura317 I haven't read the book but I did see the movie and really enjoyed it. It was a little campy but the premise was good. I liked the idea of kick-butt Jane Austin characters. Somehow it fit. 8y
LauraBrook Oh man, I've got a lot of Austen spinoffs, I'll take the good, bad, and indifferent. There are so many! But it's the kind of problem I like to have. 😉 8y
Leelee08 @Laura317 I thought I was really going to like it, but I didn't really care for it. I was surprised by how much I didn't like the zombie plot line. 8y
Leelee08 @LauraBrook it's an awesome problem to have!😀😀 8y
quirkyreader I like the spin offs that Amanda Granges writes. Try the one where Mr. D'Arcy is a vampire. 8y
Leelee08 @quirkyreader Thank you! I will definitely try it! 8y
LauraBrook Oh yeah, I forgot about that one, it was good! 8y
Leelee08 @quirkyreader Thank you for the tip! I had no idea she did a series from the Austen men's point of view...I just ordered Mr. Knightley's Diary from Amazon. He's my fave😍 8y
quirkyreader I still have yet to read all the diaries. I liked the one for Mr. Tilney. Eventually I'll get to Wickham's. 8y
TaylorMay Glad to hear good things about this one. I got it on a whim and have been wanting to read it. My fave P&P alternate is the Fitzwilliam Darcy Gentleman trilogy by Pamela Aiden (P&P from Darcy's POV). The second book was kinda odd but the first and last made up for it ❤️ 8y
iread2much Oo, I also love P&P adaptations, I hope you'll post more that you like! 8y
moranadatter @Laura317 I read it when it came out. It was a great idea, but it wasn't well executed. It has been a few years, but I remember a comment about Mr. Hurst being silent for the rest of the evening and him speaking a paragraph or two later. There were several things like that. 8y
moranadatter Thanks! I'll check that one out. I'm picky about Austen adaptations too. I prefer the ones that have new characters as the protagonists. My favorite is A 8y
Leelee08 @TaylorMay That's awesome! I love getting new recommendations...thank you!😊 8y
Leelee08 @iread2much I definitely will!!😀 8y
Leelee08 @kmdartist Thank you for the recommendation....I love anything to do with Emma! It's my favorite. 😍 8y
TaylorMay @Leelee08 I thought you knew! You have the first in the trilogy (An Assembly Such As This) on your shelf already😉 8y
Leelee08 @TaylorMay I had no idea they were the same trilogy! 😬 haha 8y
iread2much Yay! I'm looking forward to your recommendations! 8y
