Wild at Home: How to style and care for beautiful plants | Hilton Carter
8 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
"Hilton Carter's love for plants is infectious... His lush and exuberant displays are inspiring reminders that plants can be so much more than neat little containers on a window sill."Grace Bonney, Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Design*Sponge Take a tour through Hiltons own apartment and other lush spaces, filled with a huge array of thriving plants, and learn all you need to know to create your own urban jungle. As the owner of over 200 plants, Hilton feels strongly about the role of plants in ones home not just for the beauty they add, but for health benefits as well: having plants in your home not only adds life, but changes the airflow throughout. Its also a key design element when styling your place. For me, it wasnt about just having greenery, but having the right variety of greenery. I like to see the different textures of foliage all grouped together. You take a fiddle leaf fig and sandwich it between a birds of paradise and a monstera and.... yes! You will be armed with the know-how you need to care for your plants, where to place them, how to propagate, how to find the right pot, and much more, and most importantly, how to arrange them so that they look their best. Combine sizes and leaf shapes to stunning effect, grow your own succulents from leaf cuttings, create your own air plant display, and more.

First day back at work.
Same vibes as my desk plant.

kspenmoll Hope the rest of the day upward! 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @kspenmoll, it‘s not so much that it‘s a bad day. It‘s that it‘s hot, the air conditioner is not coping - and one feels like they are taking their lives in their hands when reminding people about the mask mandate. 3y
julesG Typical Monday, then. 🙄🙄🙄 3y

CarolynM Hope you get back on the groove soon💕 3y
StaceGhost May all noses remain covered & your hand sanitizer be moisturizing ❤️🙏🏻 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @StaceGhost, 2022 could be the year nose tweaking comes back in 😏 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG; I‘m hoping the leaves have unfurled by tomorrow 😅 I wasn‘t planning on being gone for so long 3y
StaceGhost @thegirlwiththelibrarybag hahaha! I fantasize about squirt guns filled with purell 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, wake me when it‘s winter 🥵 today went better than I expected 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @StaceGhost, I‘ve taken to giving people meaningful looks and tapping my mask (only in my place of work not out and about). I‘ve given up on subtle for the few remaining colleagues who can‘t seem to get it together with the mask - and just say NICE NOSE 🙄. I like your squirt gun idea - much easier to maintain social distance then…. And they might not see you coming. 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, the best thing about this week is that there is a public holiday in the middle of it. I‘m in the middle of a heat wave and I don‘t like it 3y
julesG How about we exchange a few degrees? It's about 4°C here right now. Snow on the forecast. Hope you can enjoy the holiday and relax with a good book. 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, it‘s currently hotter inside than out ? 4° sounds like a dream! 3y

Got distracted from project bookshelf but I did water my plants, pack away my Christmas decorations & tried out a new pea & feta fritter recipe. I‘m struggling with the weather at the moment - I don‘t sleep very well when it‘s hot (Yay - Summer!) and I wonder how I‘ll cope back at work next week - when I‘m exhausted after a day gently puttering around home.

Don‘t tell me other plants - but this one is my favourite 😉

Lizpixie I know how you feel, Neville(my library philodendron) is my constant reading companion. Who needs a cat! 3y

It‘s after midnight and the urge to rearrange a bookshelf has struck… I just need to take my plants off my table so that I can move the table so that I have enough room to get started.

I got this plant, accidentally (in that I ordered something else and they sent this in error) during an early 2020 lockdown - and I didn‘t think it would thrive in the lighting conditions of my apartment- and yet here we are!

Clwojick So cute! I adore the pot! 3y
AmyG What kind of plant is that? (edited) 3y
Chrissyreadit Your shelves look like a lot of fun! 3y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Clwojick, thanks - it was an impulse buy in a stationary shop 🤣 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @AmyG, a Begonia Maculata (or Polka Dot Begonia) 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Chrissyreadit, thanks! These are my main shelves and also the most photogenic - and not the ones I want to rearrange 3y
AmyG It‘s lovely. 3y
Chelsea.Poole Sometimes I‘m surprised at what I keep alive also! 🪴 cute pot! (edited) 3y
janeycanuck OMG, I love how that plant looks like hair for that pot! 3y

So I had some cash… and then I went to a makers market 😂 and well (you are probably not going to be surprised to learn that) now I don‘t have any cash…

But I did get the last minute gift that had slipped my mind (oops!) and I did treat myself to this adorable tiny succulent tray, 3 pairs of tiny stud earrings and another framed piece of art - because it sparked joy ✨

julesG Sounds like a successful trip to the makers market. That tiny tray looks lovely. 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, it‘s so sweet! I love looking at all the ceramic goodies that are around at the moment - was very pleased to bring this one home 3y

Pickpick

This book on bringing plants 🌱 into your home shows many of the author‘s clients‘ homes. He goes into how to layer plants and how to create an interesting mix. The last 1/3 goes into caring for plants as well as some of his favorites. I wish I could have a Fiddle Leaf Fig, as they are striking and beautiful, but they need more light than my studio gets 😢. One day! Lots of beautiful full page photos.
