Raw Shark Texts
Raw Shark Texts | Steven Hall
33 posts | 49 read | 45 to read
A thrillingly original novel published in thirty-three countries to worldwide acclaim, The New York Times Magazine called The Raw Shark Texts a genre-founding work of fiction. Eric Sanderson wakes up in a house he doesn't recognize, unable to remember anything of his life. All he has left are his diary entries recalling Clio, a perfect love who died under mysterious circumstances, and a house that may contain the secrets to Eric's prior life. But there may be more to this story, or it may be a different story altogether. With the help of allies found on the fringes of society, Eric embarks on an edge-of-your-seat journey to uncover the truth about himself and to escape the predatory forces that threaten to consume him. Moving with the pace of a superb thriller, The Raw Shark Texts has sparked the imaginations of readers around the world and is one of the most talked-about novels in years.

The truly original imaginative elements introduced around concepts, thoughts and the physical world, how books and words are used, was highly entertaining. However, this book is primarily about a man struggling to deal with grief after a great loss. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with ongoing mental health concerns. Ian the Cat, with his multitude of creatively described unimpressed glares, was not harmed in the making of this story. 😼

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Another book from my shelves finally read and off my TBR. 😀

Parts of this felt like House of Leaves because of its unique formatting, and other sections reminded me of cheesy old sci-fi movies I watched as a kid. It's definitely a book unlike others, and the story is engaging, although it is weird, but I like weird. 💚

Reagan This book is insane, I wonder if I still have my copy... 🙇🏼‍♀️ 4y

1) New Zealand. I wrote in my school year book 20 years ago that I want to go there someday, but haven't managed it yet. No plans.

2) My son is back at school every second day. He's happy to see his friends, and I'm glad it's quieter in the home office.

Starting this one for my #bookclub (another choice was Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, but it's really boring so far). The cover is epic 🌁 and there are some postmodernist peculiarities with the text layout, which I love. The book has been on my TBR for almost 8 years! 😅

Well, this was different.
I gave it a pick for originality, although I‘m not sure all the kinks in the story were resolved or expained.
Still, the idea of an actual shark made of words/thoughts stalking someone to eat their mind was a cool concept.

Another re-read. It‘s been 11 years since I last read this, but I couldn‘t settle on anything from my to-read list. So I decided on a revisit. From my previous rating of the book it looks like I really liked it. Now it‘ll be put to the test. One thing is certain, I really don‘t like this cover. It looks like a cheap crime novel.

I might have a problem... estimated delivery date for all these is not until the middle of June (because China), but I still couldn‘t resist.

Quite a good start, but then the book couldn't live up to my expectations.
It is a postmodern novel about loss and language. With a lot of conceptual sharks and a lovestory.
In its form it reminded me a bit of House of Leaves by Danielewsky, but that was much better.
A quick-read, I wanted to know how it would finish, but I was also sure I would be a bit disappointed.

mcipher I love that book! I keep hoping he puts out another one but have to content myself with rereads. Supposedly there's a whole bunch of extra bookish stuff out there on the internet, too, but I haven't gotten around to looking into it. Have you? 8y

I know several of these are popular for #weirdbooks, but with good reason! Of the hard copies I own, these have the most "what-the-what?"-iest moments. ? #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge

Suzze Jeesh. I still have an advance copy of Library at Mount Char that I haven't read. I think a lot of the "weird" comments have me scared of it. ??? 8y
DGRachel @Suzze No, don't be scared! It's wonderful and unique. It's not a cookie cutter book (not that there's anything wrong with books that adhere to a strict formula). It made me laugh, gasp, and cry. I checked it out from the library and loved it so much I HAD to buy my own copy. 8y

#tbt. I have trouble remembering details of all the books I've read, but good books leave imprints on my soul. This is one of those. I loved the originality. I remember being haunted by the ending and making a friend read it. We both came away with different interpretations. I love books that speak to people in such different ways. It's also the first adult novel I read that makes art out of words on the page.

Eyelit Loved that one! Need to read again, methinks. 8y

I'm a sucker for any book that starts with the protagonist waking up and not knowing who or where he is. From there, Steven Hall goes on to tell a fun, interesting story that plays with concepts and ideas about language itself.
