Death of a Gossip
Death of a Gossip | M.C. Beaton
When society widow and gossip columnist Lady Jane Winters joins the local fishing class she wastes no time in ruffling feathers - or should that be fins? - of those around her. Among the victims of her sharp tongue is Lochdubh constable Hamish Macbeth, yet not even Hamish thinks someone would seriously want to silence Lady Jane's shrill voice permanently - until her strangled body is fished out of the river. Now with the help of the lovely Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, Hamish must steer a course through the choppy waters of the tattler's life to find a murderer. But with a school of suspects who aren't willing to talk, and the dead woman telling no tales, Hamish may well be in over his head for he knows that secrets are dangerous, knowledge is power, and killers when cornered usually do strike again.

First published in 1985, it is a little dated, but still quite charming. Hamish Macbeth is the constable in a small Scottish town. He seems to be slow and lazy but when a murder occurs and the big city inspector comes to town and takes over Macbeth‘s office and treats him like the village idiot, Hamish uses his knowledge of locals and his extended family and their contacts to solve the murder.

I‘m all caught up on the Agatha Raisin series so I decided to dive into her Hamish Macbeth books. The audiobooks are all available on Audible Plus btw! Book 1 is okay but nothing special. I think they will get better as they go along and the characters are more fleshed out. I definitely plan on reading more. 3⭐️

This book a little mystery was just ok. Not thrilled of the way the author describes women.

I‘m not much of a mystery reader but I thought I‘d give this short one a try. Set in a Scottish fishing school.

Wow - It‘s hard to read women (it‘s always women...) being described as fat, massive and a heifer. This book made a reference like this on almost every page. What tipped me over the edge was seeing people with disabilities being called a name that I won‘t even type. This was written in 1985. I can‘t believe the series was made into a TV show. On top of that, the writing was awful. No thanks.

I liked Hamish, but I wanted to jump into the book and shake Alice out of her moon-eyed stupor over that obvious twit Jeremy, and Lady Jane was so horrible I almost stopped listening. The thing that was the most irritating was the sheer number of times that the author felt the need to describe Heather as “plump” when it did absolutely nothing to help the story. This book was okay, but I‘m not sure if I‘m going to continue the series.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Yeah, MC Beaton is often quite sexist in her descriptions of women... I remember being annoyed by how Elspeth was described. 5y
ErikaB @thegirlwiththelibrarybag That‘s good to know going forward. There was also the spot where Priscilla‘s father said the only career for a woman was a wife and mother that made me stop and check the publication date, and it was really disappointing to see it was from the late 1980s. I may just stick with the TV series and be happy it seems to share so little with the books. 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @ErikaB, even the ones with a more recent publication date carry that same mentality. Haven‘t seen the show - but glad it‘s enjoyable! 5y

This is the first title from the Hamish Macbeth murder mystery books by M.C Beaton!
These books are so full of humour, they make murder seem cheerful!
I have fallen inlove with the village bobby Hamish and his loyal companion Towser and i can't wait to fill up part of my book shelf with the completed collection of these books!
Completely different to the style of Agatha Raisin, yet still so very gripping and worthwhile!
Definitely recommend.

I adore Hamish! He‘s like the Columbo of Scotland‘s police force - everyone thinks he‘s a little slow and definitely quirky, but he‘s very intelligent and resourceful. Much of the action takes place in the Highland village of Lochdubh, where the skies #BloweNorthernWinde . Tagged is the first in the series. Fast reads, a little repetitive, but it feels like visiting old friends every time I read these books. #WinterWonderland

This was the perfect accompaniment for my work commute. Listening to it at double speed meant I got it finished just as I pulled up outside my home. It was also charming enough to keep me engaged and familiar enough (the bumbling country cops somehow manages to solve the case and reveal it as all suspects are gathered together) that I didn't really need to think too much about the story. Plus the narrator is a dream to listen to.

#Fridaymorning #breakfastoutdoors
Was planning on reading while waiting for breakfast - a treat- but the table behind me is having a loud face time chat which I find extremely distracting & Annoying. Can‘t focus! Could tell you word for word what they are saying...😱😱😱😱
Starting this book thanks to @Andrew65 . Using it just as he suggested: as a needed break from The Pope and Mussolini. I can balance several books at once.suits my ADD brain.

MrBook This chat thing just happened to @BookBabe the other day!!! Is there no decorum and respect for others anymore? 😔 6y
kspenmoll @MrBook It went on the entire time I was there, almost an hour. You are right, so rude! Never could read. 6y
Andrew65 @kspenmoll @MrBook @BookBabe Couldn‘t agree more, beyond rude. Also drives me crazy if trying to read or work on the train and this happens! 🤯 Think this happened virtually all the way recently on a 200 Mile journey! 6y

MrBook @Andrew65 😱😔 Good grief! 6y
BookBabe @Andrew65 @kspenmoll Yup, what a drag. Makes me think I should bring noice-cancelling over-ear headphones with me everywhere, so at least I could listen to an audiobook when that happens. 😑 6y
kspenmoll @BookBabe Now there is an idea, but still, sad we have to resort to headphones!!! 6y

I really don't #autobuy books; I buy books that sound interesting to me, no rhyme or reason. That being said, I buy a lot of books. But, there are authors that I automatically get out of the library. The Hamish Macbeth series is one of them. I adore Hamish, a Columbo of the Scottish Highlands. #SplashIntoSummerReads

Andrew65 I love Hamish and my time in Lochdubh too! 8y
Librarybelle @Andrew65 Isn't Lochdubh one of those places you just want to visit? Beaton had created a quirky set of characters I want to meet. Everything about it is so appealing, except for the excessive amount of murders in the area, of course. 😉 8y
Andrew65 @Librarybelle Definitely, it is a place you could spend many a day in, although might want to take a bodyguard! 8y

Ein kleiner feiner Krimi für zwischendurch. In guter alter Detektivform geschrieben, wird man in 80-er Jahre des schottischen Hochlands entführt und auf die menschliche Natur gestoßen. 😉

A tiny little crime as a short read. Writing as a detective story, it is settled in scotish Highlands in the 80ies, where we get to know the human nature. 😉

Nachdem ich mich mit dem letzten Buch auch schon in Schottland aufgehalten habe, mache ich bei #LitsyAtoZ direkt mit Schottland weiter. 😉

The last book also took place in Scotland, so I choose the next one for #LitsyAtoZ even set in Scotland. 😉

DeborahSmall I used to watch the tv show! My cousin got married in a castle close to where it's set and we stayed in the town for the weekend. It's beautiful 8y
