In Jennifer Egans highly acclaimed first novel, set in 1978, the political drama and familial tensions of the 1960s form a backdrop for the world of Phoebe OConnor, age eighteen. Phoebe is obsessed with the memory and death of her sister Faith, a beautiful idealistic hippie who died in Italy in 1970. In order to find out the truth about Faiths life and death, Phoebe retraces her steps from San Francisco across Europe, a quest which yields both complex and disturbing revelations about family, love, and Faiths lost generation. This spellbinding novel introduced Egans remarkable ability to tie suspense with deeply insightful characters and the nuances of emotion. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Egan‘s debut ties Goon Squad as my favorite. The storyline about the sisters is engrossing, but the way she uses their story to illustrate the idealism of the 60s giving way to the much darker 70s makes this 5⭐️!

In 1969, Faith‘s idealism led her from SF to Europe, where she died. Nine years later, her sister follows in her footsteps to try to find answers. The places she goes have changed a lot in those years, and she must find a way to let go.

Cinfhen Sounds good!! 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was very good! 2y
Cinfhen Im still iffy on Egan - waiting to see how I get on with this one for bookclub 2y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I think you‘d like this more because it‘s less experimental than her other books. She‘s really a master at plot development and pacing. Goon Squad and CH definitely have experimental elements, as does The Keep, but this is her most “normal” book. 2y
Cinfhen Ok!! Good to know 😃#BorrowNotBuy but I‘m definitely gonna try it (edited) 2y

I‘ve had a rough week, so I decided to treat myself to a trip to the used bookstore. I came for the Egan, but also picked up the other two! All three are authors whose backlists I‘m tackling in 2022.

Are any other Littens thinking of seeing Maggie O at Parnassus in October? Seriously considering it…

TrishB She‘s on in Manchester (U.K.) in November and I‘m really interested but would have to travel home in my own and I hate doing that in winter! 2y
britt_brooke Hamnet is on deck for my book club next month! I didn‘t care for the other book of hers I read, but I‘m excited to try again. What date is the event? 2y
MicheleinPhilly Have you never read Olive Kitteridge? 2y

britt_brooke @Megabooks Oof, midweek is tricky. 2y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I get that. The boys are in school and may have activities. I‘ll decide about a ticket in the next week or so and let you know. Obvi I‘d love to meet you there, but I understand if life interferes. 💜👍🏻 2y
BarbaraBB I read all three of them. The Egan was disappointing but I loved both others. 2y
Cinfhen Great picks!!!! I haven‘t read the Egan but I LOVED Olive and Hamnet too!!! Well played 😁 2y
Centique I‘m going to be so interested in what you think of the Egan. I had such mixed feelings about it myself but in some ways that made it more interesting. 2y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Definitely lmk just in case! 2y
TheLudicReader Hamnet is so good. 2y
kspenmoll I would love to see her! Enjoy. I am too far away in CT. 2y

I really loved this book, her first novel and set in 1978 and also in the 1960s. Phoebe is obsessed with the death of her sister Faith. So much so that she decides to retrace Faith's journey in Europe and eventually to Italy with she died. Well written and you feel the drama of Phoebe and what she is going through. There is also the politics of the 60s in the US and Europe.

Just finished.
Quick read, pretty good at keeping me reading. Liked the slight turn of events and the descriptions of Europe.

Another book with 'invisible' in the title... I sense a theme!!
I read her Go in Squad book last year but that's all I know by her.
This seems good so far as Phoebe tries to reconcile her memories of her sister with those of reality.

#heatofjuly #blurredlines

It‘s the 60s and Phoebe is obsessed with her perfect, beautiful sister Faith who she‘s told committed suicide while in Europe. She unravels her sister‘s past to find out how this could happen. As she retraces her sister‘s steps the lines between their lives blur.
I found this both engrossing and disturbing. I finished the book thinking I didn‘t like it but it stayed with me and I‘ve changed my mind!

BarbaraBB I‘ve read this one ages ago and wasn‘t as impressed with her later work. Maybe it‘s time for a reread 💕 6y
Centique @BarbaraBB this is the only one I‘ve read but I have A Visit from the Goon Squad on my TBR 6y
Cinfhen Sounds good!! Do u think I‘d like it, Jo??? 😄 6y
Centique @Cinfhen you might! It‘s hard to be sure with this one. Well written and literary, atmospheric for sure, but not very likeable characters. If you like the 60s feel, it captures that well I think. Give it a try maybe? 6y

Beautiful prose and heartbreaking story. I think the time setting the author chose was perfect, and I felt like the main character was very real, although some elements of the plot required a bit too much suspension of disbelief. But maybe that is just literary license 🙂 4/5⭐️

At no time in her life had Phoebe felt so entirely her body's citizen, yet at the same time her detachment had never been greater. She felt like a spectator, observing her physical self in baffled amazement as if it were a violent, stricken creature she were nursing through a fit.

Eagan writes beautifully, describing Janice Joplin‘s voice as the sound of burlap tearing…. Faith‘s suicide was heartbreaking, yet not unsurprising, her actions mirrored the social progression of the decade. From throwing feathers in the air to planting bombs, just as the era began with peace rallies and music and ended with Hell‘s Angels at Altamont. Slow at times, this book has left me thinking, and looking for more of Eagan‘s books to read.

Interesting read. The hope/freedom ideals starting the 60‘s turning to loss/disillusionment is reflected in the lives of Faith and Wolf. Phoebe, the younger sister is left behind in the 70‘s, feeling lost and aimless, having missed out on her sister‘s life. I believe she represents what a lot of people felt at the time, wanting to return to the beginning of the era and unable to do so and not knowing how to go forward.
