The Invisible Circus | Jennifer Egan

Eagan writes beautifully, describing Janice Joplin‘s voice as the sound of burlap tearing…. Faith‘s suicide was heartbreaking, yet not unsurprising, her actions mirrored the social progression of the decade. From throwing feathers in the air to planting bombs, just as the era began with peace rallies and music and ended with Hell‘s Angels at Altamont. Slow at times, this book has left me thinking, and looking for more of Eagan‘s books to read.

The Invisible Circus | Jennifer Egan

Interesting read. The hope/freedom ideals starting the 60‘s turning to loss/disillusionment is reflected in the lives of Faith and Wolf. Phoebe, the younger sister is left behind in the 70‘s, feeling lost and aimless, having missed out on her sister‘s life. I believe she represents what a lot of people felt at the time, wanting to return to the beginning of the era and unable to do so and not knowing how to go forward.

Enjoyed this more than her first, A Dark Dark Wood. This seemed a bit more suspenseful to me. It is no Gone Girl though. Lo Blacklock, the main character was not likeable. Maybe that was the point? I did not immediately figure out who the antagonist was, and enjoyed a fun, light read, while solving the mystery.

I love good suspenseful thriller and this one did not deliver. I found it predictable, and some of the characters (Flo), just didn‘t make sense to me. She was so over the top. Even Nora was not that engaging to me, still mourning over a teen-aged relationship when you have obviously grown up to be an adult with a successful career and new life? Great for an easy read that doesn‘t challenge or raise any thought provoking questions.

MyNamesParadise There was more to it than just a teen relationship. The abortion and the dismissal via text added more layers to the hurt feelings. I've know my girls like Clare (they're not killers I hope) and they're scary! 8y

A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
Pickpick

Just finished last night. Obviously a story written in another country, but the truths in it are universal. Ove, the curmudgeon with a sad past, becomes unwillingly involved in the lives of those around him and finds his life changed. It is about the impact people's lives can have on each other, sometimes even more than they know.

This book isn't about sports exactly, but I love how Trish, hopelessly lost in the wilderness, listens to Red Sox games on her radio each night as a way to stay connected to the world. Her favorite player serves as a kind of spiritual mentor and guide to help her survive. Not a typical King story, but awesome just the same.

One of my favorite books. Completely heartbreaking descriptions of the Holocaust. His writing is beautiful.

Liked this book a lot. The idea of Cryptids living among us is cool. The way they are abused and discriminated against and put on show is sad, yet realistic. I didn't really "get" The purpose of The Reaping, did I miss something?
