Finna | Nino Cipri
Finna is a rambunctious, touching story that blends all the horrors the multiverse has to offer with the everyday awfulness of low-wage work. It explores queer relationships and queer feelings, capitalism and accountability, labor and love, all with a bouncing sense of humor and a commitment to the strange. When an elderly customer at a big box furniture store slips through a portal to another dimension, its up to two minimum-wage employees to track her across the multiverse and protect their companys bottom line. Multi-dimensional swashbuckling would be hard enough, but those two unfortunate souls broke up a week ago. To find the missing granny, Ava and Jules will brave carnivorous furniture, swarms of identical furniture spokespeople, and the deep resentment simmering between them. Can friendship blossom from the ashes of their relationship? In infinite dimensions, all things are possible.

What would happen if a work home opened up inside an IKEA? Where would that wormhole lead to?

Lots of humour and action in this anti-capitalist multiverse novella. Ava has recently broken up with Jules and is called into work at LitenVärd on her fay off, hoping the won‘t run into Jules there, but things start to get weird when she goes in search of a missing shopper, lost in the store.

I loved this one just as much as I loved the other book in the series. They're so different, how does Cipri manage that? And they're still sort of the same. It's amazing. And I do get the appeal of that one, and why many people prefer “Finna“. Well, I hope that there are going to be more books in the series. Or more anti-capitalist sci-fi novellas by Cipri.

An IKEA-esque store contains wormholes/maskhål which may carry unwary shoppers into alternative universes from which hapless junior staff must then retrieve them.

In the 1st chapter or so I found it too reminiscent of Horrorstör but then it took off in its own direction and I found the story great fun. Not so keen on Jules and Ava's rehashing of their recently ended relationship but I will definitely be watching out for the next in the series.

Ava thinks going back to her retail job after breaking up w/ a coworker is going to be hell. & then both of them are voluntold to rescue a lost customer through a multidimensional wormhole. Should be easy, right?

Such fun! We get clear views of who Ava & Jules are, & then wacky adventures! Such world building for such a short novella. A bit more ambiguous ending then I usually prefer, but I‘ll hope that‘s because there will be a sequel.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Ava and Jules have true emotional issues they need to work through individually before they can mesh as a couple. One is a highly anxious person, and the other is free spirit. I related to both. I try not to get on people's nerves, but my impulsiveness just throws that goal out the window.

Any author could write about the trials of working through the pain of young love, but Nino Cipri set their work in the multiverse. So clever and cute.

“This is amazing,” Jules said. “It‘s a creepy Scandinavian Narnia. I can‘t believe we found something like this!”

“Trisha?” Ava said into the phone, and Jules whipped their head around. “We‘ve got a situation up in the showrooms.”

“I‘ll be right there,” Trisha replied and hung up.

“Seriously?” Jules said. They sighed with melodramatic disappointment. “We find A Wrinkle in Time, and you tell the manager?” 😂

The audio on this is only 3 hours, and if you liked Horrorstor or like the idea of a story that takes place (partially) inside an IKEA-like store, this is for you. It‘s less horror that Hendrix‘s book, and leans scifi and multiverse. LGBTQIA young adults searching for a missing grandma. Good times!

Eyelit I loved this one - there‘s a sequel of sorts too I think it‘s called defekt 10mo

First book of 2024! Short novella about two exes who have to go find an old woman who has somehow got lost in an IKEA-like multiverse. I‘m trying not to use novellas for my reading challenges but the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge specifically has a prompt for a sci-fi novella so this title fits that prompt.

Two recent queer exes who both work at Littenvard *cough IKEA cough* get sent on a trip way above their minimum wage paygrade through a wormhole in their store, where an elderly customer has accidentally wandered.

Wonderful world-building and character work, managed in the small space of a novella. Also, a perfect ending and great #audiobook narration!

A surprisingly (for how short this book was) layered sci-fi adventure with touches of horror and romantic possibilities. Reminiscent of Grady Hendrix‘s Horrorstore, but lighter and with more swashbuckling. Having to work on your day off is bad enough, but when an elderly customer gets lost in a wormhole, Ava gets to add interdimensional travel, on foot, with her ex, to the suckage. Things can only go up from there, right?

Two audiobooks set in Fall - the tagged and its sequel DEFEKT make up the fun LitenVerse fantasy novella set. Here wormholes to other universes are commonplace at an Ikea-like big box home store. One of the CWs for the 2nd novella is “graphic violence against anthropomorphic furniture“ which should give you an idea of their quirky humor. #Trans & #lgbt representation.

Tagged was a 2021 Hugo Finalist. Full review: https://bit.ly/rvw-Finna

This was a cute sci-fi/fantasy romp. The reviews that compare it to Hitchhiker's Guide are apt. It has a similar feel where sci-fi elements encroach on the lives of the characters in humorous ways. I like the multiverse premise and enjoyed some of the humor. The characters weren't super compelling to me, but they worked well enough. I related to the retail IKEA-like setting as well. I might read more in this series if I stumble upon them.

An enjoyable novella-length romp with a nonbinary central character adventuring through various wormholes into the multiverse. The starting point is an IKEA-type big box store, so comparison to Hendrix‘s Horrorstor is a no-brainer. What I like best is the humorous critique of working in retail. For example, entitlement to overtime pay only if they are in the multiverse for more than 80 consecutive hours. #LGBTQ #ownvoices

Not sure if this one was written for us, because it is set in LitenVärld ??
LitenVärld is a furniture store chain that exists through the multiverses. Ava and Jules are asked to rescue a customer who has crossed a wormhole into another variation which may be inimical.
I did find the use of ‘them‘, ‘they‘ etc confusing because it was used as both the singular and plural and I wasn‘t always sure which was which.

As tender-hearted in its belief in human relationships as it is razor sharp in its criticism of capitalism, FINNA follows two queer low-wage workers (who have just broken up with each other) at the IKEA-esque superstore LitenVärld through a wormhole and into the multiverse in search of a lost customer. FINNA is a quick, read-it-in-day romp that has a lot to say about labor exploitation—as well as personal growth, imagination, and friendship.

I started FINNA over breakfast! It features two not-Ikea employees who look for a grandma who goes through a wormhole, which is an occasional problem across all not-Ikea‘s stores, so it‘s got me all nostalgic for the time I took MY grandma to actual-Ikea. She didn‘t wander into any wormholes, but she did give me an excellent opportunity to make a raunchy joke*. She didn‘t get it, but a lady passing by us snickered and I felt validated.

xicanti *Okay, so, my mum and I pushed my grandparents through the store in wheelchairs, because actual-IKEA‘s pretty durned big and they had leg troubles. Mum decided to buy some ornamental pebbles and asked Grandma to hold them because Grandpa‘s lap was full of his own purchases.

Grandma agreed, then forgot she‘d agreed and started to complain.

“Don‘t worry, Grandma,” I said. “She‘ll get her rocks off soon.”

I‘m maybe too proud of that.

This is a fun novella about a couple of minimum-wage workers in an imitation IKEA store. When the store's disorienting layout opens a wormhole, a customer goes missing and our heroes -- a recently-separated romantic couple whose feelings are still raw -- have to track across parallel dimensions to the rescue. It's a clever satire on consumer culture, but also a surprisingly effective emotional journey.

This little SF novella is a lot of fun. Best summed up by the scene early on when in the staff room of an IKEA type store the manager plays the floor staff a training video called Wormholes and You.

Short & sweet. I really enjoyed this multiverse-boxstore-bittersweet-romance novella. Ava & Jules just broke up & work at the same Swedish home furnishings store when a customer wanders though a localized wormhole & they - the newest & most expendable employees- are sent in to retrieve her. What follows is a journey that opens up new possibilities for living more authentic and adventurous lives for both of them.
