I love how Yang approached each novella in this series with a different style and format, and how each was told from a different character's perspective. The theme of resistance was powerful and timely. Yang incorporated themes of gender, class, and sexuality, as well. Overall, these were intriguing reads. I'd love to read more by Neon Yang.

AllDebooks It actually gave me a jolt, not from my perspective but my eldest child's pov. I think they had a very similar journey and are still figuring things out. It did open up a conversation between us, which is always good. 4d
Karisa I could relate to some of the period and gyno scenes. Other parts were totally different perspective for me to consider. As a teacher, it feels important to try and understand more povs. I liked seeing so much through Maia‘s eyes—very brave and vulnerable 4d
lil1inblue I liked how e included so many relatable experiences like getting your period, going to the gyno, navigating relationships and sex, etc., but then showed them from eir non-binary perspective. It helped to to understand 3d

AllDebooks This kind of beautifully expressed book could help so many children struggling as Maia did. That is exactly why we need to read banned books, to ensure they're known, loved, protected, and there for future generations of readers. I have no doubt that Gender Queer could have the potential to save someone's life. 4d
AllDebooks I didn't have a problem with the sexually explicit content. It was within the context of the book and not at all gratuitous. If we can cope with fairy smut, we can cope with this. The whole premise is understanding and acceptance. More of this, please. 🙌 4d
Karisa @AllDebooks “fairy smut” 😂 💗 I totally agree. Maia‘s journey could help others navigate their own and make us all feel not so alone. Especially with the references to more books given. So important 4d
5feet.of.fury @AllDebooks @Karisa agree, and it was shown with the couple deciding boundaries and how sex would look in their relationship which is so important. 4d
lil1inblue @alldebooks @karisa @5feet.of.fury Totally agree. I found this no different than hetero sexual exploration, and it could help so many kids. Either with understanding their own feelings, or with having empathy for others. 3d

Hey all! I can‘t believe it‘s already time for discussion again. Like always, I‘ll tag everyone in the first post. 3 questions total this time. #WithTheBanned

Karisa I liked the format. Some of the pages were set up so beautifully and it helped me see what e meant. Some were shocking but that went with the feelings being expressed well. 4d
AllDebooks I thought the format was perfect. The presentation of incredibly complex emotions, feelings and concepts was sensitively handled. 4d
Amiable I rarely read graphic novels, but I thought it was a perfect format for this book. 4d
5feet.of.fury I liked it, some pages were particularly helpful. Many reviews showed the picture of the 2 halves of the author and perception of eir gender for example 4d
lil1inblue I thought it was an excellent format. The art was just beautiful, and I liked how it represented eir feelings and perceptions, like @5feet.of.fury said. E was able to emphasize the content with the art. 3d

Back to my rereads of this series! I'd sort-of-mostly remembered how this worked out, except for one thing. It's still very fun, and perhaps even more so now I've read more martial arts stories and know some of the xianxia/wuxia/etc type tropes, re: the character Wei Jintai. I wish there'd been a little more about her and Sang.

Nice book but only 3.5 stars. I like the idea, but it seemed that the child felt too much pressure to “choose” their pronouns & words for the day. A better way the adults could have dealt with it is explained that the child was still valid even if they couldn‘t find their “words” for the day. Still, a good book for introducing children to the concept of pronouns. ⬇️

IriDas I should add that it was also nice for there to be an acknowledgement that pronouns are not necessarily a permanent structure. That they can be fluid and that‘s perfectly fine too. The kid‘s stress just stressed me out. lol. 2w

This was a really lovely middlegrade read. Ellen is on a class trip to Barcelona. She's Jewish, she's autistic, & she has a great dad. But she feels like her best friend is pulling away from her. When they get put on different teams for a group project, she has to learn how to make new friends & set boundaries in her relationships. There's also a new classmate who uses they pronouns, who makes Ellen think outside the binary categories shes used to

I learned a lot from this one about non-binary gender identity and asexuality. Kobabe does an excellent job of conveying the confusion and isolation e felt as e was coming of age. The art is beautiful.

The author accounts eir personal journey of queer discovery which could serve to explain gender dysphoria both to people on the outside or those who may be experiencing it without understanding. Man did the mom tick me off, not just on the pronouns, on many things. It kind of just ends randomly. But it‘s a memoir & I guess we are all in progress & evolving so …I‘ll take it for what it is.
