Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book 1)
Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book 1) | Eoin Colfer
Twelve-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl has discovered a world below ground of armed and dangerous--and extremely high-tech--fairies. He kidnaps one of them, Holly Short, and holds her for ransom in an effort to restore his family's fortune. But he may have underestimated the fairies' powers. Is he about to trigger a cross-species war?

I am very aware that I am not the intended audience for this. I didn't read it as a kid, so there isn't that nostalgia for me. My older brother LOVES this series and I really just read it because I love him.

This one is actually more so-so, but I graded it on a curve because my students like it. I couldn't quite get past a 12-year-old boy named after a Greek goddess. I can't figure out what his parents (and grandparents) were thinking. Did they just not want to name him Apollo? I mean, Artemis the goddess is awesome, but it seems a bold statement to give the name to your son. The fairy stuff is cool, though, and I love the kleptomaniac dwarf.

Kenyazero This series grows considerably after the first book. It‘s still very middle grade, but just so much fun in the absolute absurdity! 1y

Larkken This series is GREAT on audiobook. For a long time it was my husband and mys choice for road-trips, and he usually doesn‘t care much for mg fantasy! 1y

I really enjoyed the beginning of the story, but toward the end, it started to lose me. It was entertaining, but not something I absolutely loved. I will probably continue the series just to see what else happens, but I'm expecting them to be just okay reads for me.

This was a nostalgic reread. I don‘t do those often, but I needed something fun, fast, and full of sparkling magic. A villainous child MC is a cherry on top. It lost nothing of its luster on the second read.

It‘s so sad this one didn‘t get a decent adaptation. (Let‘s pretend the THING Disney made doesn‘t exist, okay?) It‘s simply asking for it. Well, maybe someday—in life, one needs hope.

Totally blown away. I liked this a lot more than I expected. Super fast-paced & intriguing with great characters & a fun storyline. Hilarious banter. Highly entertaining. A perfect middle grade read for adventure seekers who love whimsical fantasy. A well-crafted story that is fun from start to finish. Super excited to see where the series goes. This was one of those books that I wish was about twice as long because I couldn't get enough.

Karisimo I also liked this one better than I expected! 2y

On today‘s episode of my book podcast, the conversation about Artemis Fowl covers fairy lore, antiheroes, bathroom humor, racism in fantasy, office politics, law enforcement in literature, boy geniuses, and Santa Claus. Does the book hold up to my memories of it from childhood? Listen at the link in my bio to find out! ✨

BookmarkTavern Great episode! I have a very visceral memory of hiding under my quilt with a copy of this book, a pencil, and a flashlight trying to decode the bottom text. 😂 I think I still have it buried somewhere. 3y

18-23 Jan 2022 (audiobook)
We listened to approximately 30 minutes. I quite enjoyed but Beatrix could not follow what was happening. We tried listening to the first 10 minutes again today she still did not know what was happening. So we bailed and started Doctor Dolittle, which was a resounding success. Polly read this a few years ago and enjoyed it but it is a bit beyond my well-read 6 year old‘s comprehension.

Artemis, a young boy, wanting to gain control of his family‘s business again, decides to capture a fairy.

I got this book many years ago for a birthday present and I loved it. It is a good JF story. What I don‘t recommend is watching the movie. It destroyed the essence of what made the book so great and a good read for me even as an adult.

Texreader That‘s how I felt about the recent movie made from A Wrinkle in Time. It was horrible 3y
freeatlast1137 @Texreader agreed, that is another book Disney destroyed. They focus so much on the settings instead of what makes the books great. If they focused more on the plot, building the character, then the visuals would fall into place naturally. 3y

Exciting adventures, leprechauns, goblins, fairies and dwarves! And cunning Artemis who is only 12! I hear there are more of these books. This is about a 12 year old criminal mastermind who wants to steal something precious from the fairies. Lots of intrigue, adventure, fantasy and action! I thought it was a tad on the dark side for something with a 12 year old lead. Definitely fun and absorbing read for me, and I even started decoding the Gnommish language that lines each page! 🤓

Reread Artemis Fowl as my first "relaxing" book since my dissertation for the Old Favorite, which turned into rereading the whole series -- though I've now hit the books he wrote after I stopped keeping track, so that's fun! A childhood classic that was still a refreshing and new world to discover, and right before the movie airs!
