Black Elk Speaks
Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux | Black Elk
The most famous Native American book ever written, Black Elk Speaks is the acclaimed story of Lakota visionary and healer Nicholas Black Elk (18631950) and his people during the momentous, twilight years of the nineteenth century. Black Elk grew up in a time when white settlers were invading the Lakotas homeland, decimating buffalo herds and threatening to extinguish their way of life. Black Elk and other Lakotas fought back, a dogged resistance that resulted in a remarkable victory at the Little Bighorn and an unspeakable tragedy at Wounded Knee. Beautifully told through the celebrated poet and writer John G. Neihardt, Black Elk Speaks offers much more than a life story. Black Elks profound and arresting religious visions of the unity of humanity and the world around him have transformed his account into a venerated spiritual classic. Whether appreciated as a collaborative autobiography, a history of a Native American nation, or an enduring spiritual testament for all humankind, Black Elk Speaks is unforgettable. This special edition features all three prefaces to Black Elk Speaks that John G. Neihardt wrote at different points in his life, a map of Black Elks world, a reset text with Lakota words reproduced using the latest orthographic standards, and color paintings by Lakota artist Standing Bear that have not been widely available for decades.

My #december TBR is going to be all challenge books I think. Time to buckle down. The good news is after I finish my current audiobook, I only have one book to go for #booked2018 (and if anyone has a suggestion for #underdogMC I am all ears!)

As for #pop18 I probably have 6-7 prompts to go. We‘re also having a family mark-up book club so I have to finalize and read my choice for that.

Wish me luck!! #winterwonderland

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks You can do it!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 6y
Cinfhen You Can make it happen!!! But there might be some #FakeReading involved 😉As for #UnderdogHero click on the hash tag and scroll through what others read. There were some very clever and fun choices 🥰I used 6y

So, l will now attempt to catch up with a few photo challenges.

This is part of my collection of books about Native American history and culture.

On the bottom are esseys about different Native American nations. The two on top are novels

Kammbia1 N. Scott Momaday used to come into the bookstore I worked at in Santa Fe quite often. My interactions with him were always pleasant. I will have to read one of his novels. Thanks for the reminder with this post. 7y
JazzFeathers @Kammbia1 That's so cool. I'm envious 😍 l've only read this one novel by him and it wasn't particularly easy, especially because l'm not very familiar with the Pueblo culture. Lots of symbolism. But l liked it all the same 7y
