Hate List | Jennifer Brown
Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets. Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

Landing in the middle on this one. I feel like there were a lot of conversations that characters should have had that the author totally ignored plus the ending was meh.

Fantastic book about the lasting effects of bullying and trauma. As an English teacher, I firmly believe this should be required reading in all high schools.

Very good! A really moving read about dealing with trauma after tragedy. The ending made me cry! 😢

Well that was a lot heavier than I was in the mood for. I suppose that's what happens when you randomly pick a book off your shelf. Nevertheless it was a very moving read.

Very moving novel about tragedy and forgiveness. I love how Brown focuses on the aftermath of the event and the characters‘ different ways of rebuilding their lives after loss. Reading something like this definitely makes you stop and think about your actions and how they may be affecting others.

This book is amazing so far! There are so many emotions flooding through the words already and I recommend reading this book if you like hearing about thoughts going on in someones mind before and after they make a big mistake

I don‘t think I‘ve read through 400 pages in two days before! And I worked 8 hours in there too. So good and the emotions are so raw.

Zelma I really liked this one too. 5y

I started this thing at Barnes and Noble awhile ago. My husband loves books as much as I do. He likes to take his sweet time when I‘m like wham bam done. I find the book I‘m reading at home and pick up where I left off. Anyone else do this?

ShyBookOwl Haha that's kind of brilliant. I'm a "take my sweet time" type. I can spend half a day in a bookstore, easy! Lol 5y

Day 19 #SpringIntoReading
I chose Hate List for #forgive
This book isn't just about Valerie's classmates forgiving her, it's about her forgiving herself. I read this book when it first came out and recently my daughter brought it home to read. Seeing it pushed the two of us to have some pretty interesting conversations around the subject matters in this book. I ♥️ that my teen reads the same books as me. 😍

Another book for my 2018 #TeenSocialIssues list

Subject: Bullying

Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saves the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of a list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets.

The_Heeler_Booklife I read this years ago when it first came out and I think I was about 14-15 when it came out (I can‘t exactly remember, but I was a teenager) and I absolutely love this book. It‘s so raw, emotional, and something that could totally happen. 6y

This book was fairly decent, but probably not one I would find myself reaching for to read a second time. The ending was wonderful and also very sad and almost unsatisfying. Overall, I would suggest this book to my peers.

This book was gut wrenching. But it was more than that. More than a book about a school shooting. It was about the impact of hatred, second chances, finding out who you are and living with choices you make. This is such an important book and so well written. It‘s a great YA book, but also has some important lessons for adults and parents.

This was very good! Valerie is picking up the pieces of her life after her boyfriend Nick brings a gun to school and shoots half a dozen people. I didn‘t think it was going to be as good as it was. I have been living close to a community who has suffered from a school shooting and couldn‘t imagine experiencing any of this tragedy. The plot was good; not many think of the “after” with this scenario. The characters were very relatable as well.

#hardlessons I had this title picked out for the prompt BEFORE what happened yesterday. I honestly was not a fan of this title that looks at the aftermath of a school shooting and a girl who knew what the boys were thinking. It perfectly fits with the hard lessons prompt, and is popular enough to be reprinted 3 time. I just didn't care for it. Big cover is original, top is the most popular, and bottom is the new. #awesomeautumnbooks

Reading an interview with the author, I discovered that Hate List has always been Valerie's story, & that Brown didn't want to focus on Nick & the reasons behind what he did. The book is interesting in that we see a character develop & change over the course of dealing with a traumatic event, but is much more about a girl coming to terms with her life than anything else, & it was good in that sense, but overall, not exciting. Good, but not great.

The main character's boyfriend was a school shooter & she was implicated in the crime after helping him come up with a hate list to deal with bullying. She didn't plan or participate in the shooting but she's the one left to answer for it.
.
5 months later and she's returning to school and dealing with the consequences of her part in this heinous crime.
.
Do you read to escape or to understand?
.
My answer is both, but no judgement either way. 😘

These are a few contemporary YA books written by a Missouri author and set in #Missouri. Well, technically, Perfect Escape starts there and then turns into a cross country road trip. A familiar feeling setting is one of the things I enjoy about Jennifer Brown's books.

So many thoughts, where to start. First off, I planned on reading for fifteen minutes and instead read cover to cover. I had to also take a break halfway through to sit and have a long cry when I finished the scene with Val and her father on the side of the road. Im no authority on this much grief and pain, which I am lucky for, but I cant help but think that reading something this difficult puts your daily decisions into a little clearer view.
