A Belletrist Book Club Pick When Nick Beron and Hannah Rampe decide to move from New York City to the tiny upstate town of Hibernia, they're in desperate need of a change: their careers have flatlined, the city is exhausting, and they've reached a relationship stalemate. So Hannah accepts a job as live-in director of the Wright Historic House, a museum dedicated to an obscure nineteenth-century philosopher whose life was marred by tragedy. At first, life in this old, creaky house feels cozy. Nick and Hannah explore the deserted museum at night, wandering the twisting halls and sneakily trying out the former owners' original master bed. But as summer turns to fall, Hannah begins to have trouble sleeping; reluctantly, she tells Nick she's hearing whispers in the night. Then one morning, Nick wakes up to find Hannah gone. In his frantic search for her, Nick will discover the hidden legacy of Wright House: a man driven wild with grief, and a spirit aching for home.

Finished my #DoubleSpin book for October. This book is kind of different in that it‘s not quite a ghost story but not quite a thriller either. There are random interludes of letters/documents from the past and future which made it a little hard to follow until right at the end. But I really like the overall message of the book. I‘d recommend referencing the kindle version if you listen on audio.

Another book with a Halloween mention. +26 pts

Reading this book was as effortless, satisfying, and essential as breathing air. Exceptionally well written, profound, and hauntingly beautiful - I loved it.

Belletrist March Pick

One thing some people find strange about me is that I am fascinated with ghosts/spirits. With my parents both not here with me, I believe that they are always watching me and I can feel their presence. I really connected to Nick, who wrestles with questions about death and finding answers as to why he had to lose the love of his life. I was cheering him on to find his closure. I know I found mine after finishing this book.

I finished this #ghost #horror novel a while back. It‘s more cerebral than I expected but I thoroughly enjoyed the meandering pace. The narrator is somewhat unreliable and I like how the author makes ya wonder if it‘s ghosts or mental illness. This one won‘t appeal to everyone but I enjoyed it and will read more by this author.

This was such an incredible read! I read it in one day, and that‘s 100% because of the engaging storytelling and the stunning writing style. This follows Nick, a young man whose girlfriend gets a job as the director of a Historic House. Things start to go wrong after they move in, followed by her eventual disappearance. Nick tries to make sense of the mystery and the role the house‘s previous inhabitants play in it. SO BLOODY GOOD.

Cedricsmom @sumaiyya.books I just started it this week and it is very good. Well written sentences and a good story to boot. I wasn‘t aware of this book but I read a review of it in this week‘s New York Times Review of Books. 7y

Ehhh. I read this since it was Belletrist‘s BOTM. Supernatural elements aren‘t my favorite, but I decided to give this book a try anyway. It was intriguing at the start, but I didn‘t love the way it wrapped itself up.

What an odd but ultimately satisfying book. I almost gave up on it about halfway through, frustrated by unlikable characters and a murky plot. Picked it back earlier tonight and did not put it down until I had finished it. I can tell it will not leave me alone for a bit. I give it a 👻👻👻 rating.

Loved it. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

If the person you love seems to have a supernatural experience, do you believe? What if that person has a history of mental illness? And you‘re a pretty average mid-twenties guy who works in the music industry, living in New York, who finally met a girl he really loves?

Wouldn‘t you want to believe that there was some explanation for everything going wrong?

This is a thing that I‘m sure is obvious to everyone else but is never-endingly astonishing to me: that every change, every life, consists of nothing but a series of days. The shaky old wheelchair-bound man with a blanket on his lap, being hoisted out of the Access-A-Ride, was once a bulging-biceped, turnstile-leaping twenty-year-old, and the vessel that carried him all the way from there to here was no bigger than a box on a calendar.
