Heart So White
Heart So White | Javier Marías
19 posts | 20 read | 24 to read
Winner of the IMPAC Dublin Award, and widely considered Javier Marias's masterpiece, "A Heart So White "is a breathtaking novel about family secrets that chronicles the relentless power of the past. Juan knows little of the interior life of his father Ranz; but when Juan marries, he begins to consider the past anew, and begins to ponder what he doesn't really want to know. Secrecy--its possible convenience, its price, and even its civility--hovers throughout the novel. A Heart So White becomes a sort of anti-detective story of human nature. Intrigue; the sins of the father; the fraudulent and the genuine; marriage and strange repetitions of violence: Marias elegantly sends shafts of inquisitory light into shadows and onto the costs of ambivalence."

I finished A Heart so White on Friday. It wasn't bad by any stretch, but it didn't speak to me. A shame because the main character is an interpreter & I love reading about linguists 😑
Today, I made fideuà, a Catalan dish similar to paella, but with pasta instead of rice. I first ate it on holiday in Sitges, and have been making it from time to time ever since: it's a good Sunday lunch option for us!

The truth never shines forth, as the saying goes, because the only truth is that which is known to no one and remains untransmitted, that which is not translated into words or images, that which remains concealed and unverified, which is perhaps why we recount so much or even everything, to make sure that nothing has ever really happened, not once it‘s been told.

You can't read whole day. If you don't start in the morning. (March 30th, 2016)

Pickpick

The whole story is interlaced with few ideas, in particular, all ideas are derived from the concept of obligation. The parallel theme to the metaphysical themes is language, use of words and interpretation of them. I have some minor issues with the story, but despite that, this is an excellent book for all of those who like to read/contemplate about relations on Proustian way. And-this is the book with the best opening chapter that I can recall‼ï¸

JenP I loved the book so I'm so glad you liked it too 7y

Simona @JenP I liked the themes, but I'm not sure that the mixing different genres brings something extra in the execution. 7y
Simona Thank you 😊 @Alfoster 7y
HannaPolkadots I'm reading my first Javier Marías right now - los enamorados - and it's definitely a pick too. Seems like Marías is an author worth reading more of...😀 7y
Simona @HannaPolkadots I think so too! A Heart so White is my first book by this author, but definitely not the last. 7y

Just went to put some books away at the beach-house and found this rather hefty 'to read' shelf 😳 . It'll be a busy holiday! 📚

I love Marias's long looping sentences.

shawnmooney All in all, I didn't like this novel so much. But the scene where the two translators meet for the first time, the one flirting with the other by way of mistranslating his president or PM, is a scene I will never, ever forget! :-) 8y
