34 posts | 40 read | 33 to read
Maleeka suffers every day from the taunts of the other kids in her class. If they're not getting at her about her homemade clothes or her good grades, it's about her dark, black skin. When a new teacher, whose face is blotched with a startling white patch, starts at their school, Maleeka can see there is bound to be trouble for her too. But the new teacher's attitude surprises Maleeka. Miss Saunders loves the skin she's in. Can Maleeka learn to do the same?

When you don't like the body you live in and instead you are special for this reason. I will let to my school girls read this book, who are always looking for perfection and above all to accept and be accepted.

This book didn‘t suck but I just wasn‘t feeling it. I didn‘t really like Maleeka all that much and I just felt like the writing wasn‘t that clear at a lot of points. I‘m really disappointed by the fact my school picked this for a #BattleOfTheBooks book when it is filled with so many trigger warning worthy things. I.e, child abuse, arson, toxic friendships, suicide jokes, racism, body-shaming, and those are just the ones off the top of my head. 3⭐️

Short but powerful.

Maleeka, a seventh grader, is being bullied at school because she has dark skin and she wears handmade clothes, among other things. Since her father passed away she had forgotten to see how beautiful and smart she is instead of listening to what others have to say. Maleeka has to learn to see herself through her own eyes, find her voice, and to stay true to herself.

A talented young girl is harassed at school and the new teacher is making it worse. As Maleeka fights poverty and her own lack of self-confidence, she begins to find strength in the character she‘s writing for an English project. It has a nice if unrealistic ending.

Great story about overcoming the odds. Bullying and self-esteem as a teenager is always hard to deal with at that age. I enjoyed this YA novel. I‘ve read 2 depressing books and now I need something lighthearted. Please send me some recommendations.

In_the_stacks Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson is very very funny- I recommend it if you need something light and fun! I (edited) 4y

#bbrc #mgme #newclassic

Maleeka is a bright middle schooler who comes from an impoverished home, & is constantly teased over her dark complexion. As a result, she struggles with low self-esteem and finding her identity. It‘s complexity & depth make this a great book for a MS novel study.

Maya is currently working on an identity project to finish up this unit. We both loved the book, and it has spurred some wonderful dinner conversations.

Taking a break from Halloween and #screamathon reading to read the current novel study in Maya‘s Language Arts class.

I‘m going to count this for #bbrc #mgme #newclassic - I think it fits that prompt?

With a huge step count after handing out campaign flyers today, I‘m also not moving the rest of the night, and enjoying a salted caramel 🍎 cider! #brcr4

I really enjoyed this. The writing is incredible and Flake does an amazing job dealing with and discussing both classism and colorism but it also takes a look at the school system and how one person trying to make change has a lot to overcome.

The Skin I‘m In is a masterpiece. Flake explores sensitive issues that many students, even adults, deal with on a daily basis. Maleeka Madison, the protagonist, is in the 7th grade at McClenton Middle School. Unfortunately, she is having a rough time due to bullying, self-image/esteem, loving herself, and puppy love. Find out how Maleeka deals with these matters and if she overcomes them. This is a must read!

I read this book in a day. It is incredibly well layered. Not only does it deal with classism and colorism, but it also looks at how one person trying to make a change has a lot to overcome. This book is so painful because it hints at the worst parts of people and how some of those traits can appear in young people. I highly recommend. It‘s a quick read but it‘s full of complex issues.

Just because a person is different, this doesn‘t mean that person should be judged. This is happening with Miss Saunders and Maleeka Madison.

So February is coming. #readBlackwomen is happening! And I‘m also going to begin my theme for this year which is reading #BlackClassics. Each month for the rest of the year I‘ll be reading at least two books considered to be classic literature written by a Black author. These are my first two selections!

Nebklvr This is great! I have out from the library “I know why the caged bird sings”, i know. It is a travesty that i haven‘t read it yet. For some reason, I prefer the more obscure books and have to force myself to read the well-known classics even though I know I will love them. Look forward to learning about other books and reading your reviews. (edited) 6y

Lots of celebrating in our house last night! Maya applied for a spot in the lottery for an IB magnet middle school in our school district that is ranked nationally, and offers an amazing, rigorous program that is strong in both arts and STEM and therefore perfect for my child.

She was ECSTATIC last night when she found out she got in.

Of course one of the 1st things we did was look at the required reading list for 6th grade, an exciting list!📚

Hestapleton Wow! Congrats! That‘s so amazing for her! And I want that reading list! Looks really good and diverse and challenging! So excited for you guys! 6y
alisiakae @Hestapleton That‘s one of the things we love is the school‘s diversity, which is reflected in the curriculum. I think families at the school this year represent more than 40 nationalities. 6y

Great slice of life YA (pre YA? This is probably between middle grade and YA, I could definitely see myself loving it as much it in Jr high if I were tuned into new books then. This was released around when I was the right age.) Maleeka is a very dark skinned black girl learning to see her own beauty and inner strength. The voice of a 13 year old rang very true in struggling to balance her own potential against peer pressure (cont'd in comments)

parasolofdoom without giving into the platitudes adults often place on kids to rise above. Yes the adults are telling her this but her struggle with it is very real and eventual triumph was pitch perfect. 7y

Set against the backdrop of middle school and awkward adolescence, Maleeka is teased for her dark skin and handmade clothes. Almost any darker woman can relate to this, and Flake's novel captured the unsettling feelings of ineptitude wrapped around true intelligence. A really good middle grades story to understand differences, peer pressure, and courage over adversity. (A much more thorough review is on my site.) #recommendsday
