We are rewatching Ted Lasso on vacation and I stumbled across this book. It‘s the same one. Ted‘s dad reads for him so he won‘t fail his test in school. I love this show so much!

I wanted more historical content from my middle grade reads this month but my library hold on StuntBoy came in early and my bookspin pick wasn‘t a historical one. Oh well, at least I got a few mg reads in. I‘m still reading Blue Birds and I‘m liking it above the others so that and StuntBoy are my favorites. Thanks for hosting @megnews @sblbooks

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I didn‘t love this like I thought I would and it took me forever to get through it. I felt there was too much going on and I should have bailed but I finished. A coming of age tale set in 1770‘s at the beginning of the American Revolution. Still, it makes for a great souvenir from one of my visits to Boston and the Freedom Trail.
#MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime
Finally got my mg timeline tbr set. Doubtful I‘ll get to all of the above titles but I‘m going to give it a go.
Johnny Tremain 1770‘s
Daughter of Madrugada 1846
Elijah of Buxton 1850‘s
Stella by Starlight 1920‘s
Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry 1930‘s
The War That Saved My Life 1940‘s
Living too far from town, we didn't get to visit the library often. But when I was able to get a book, I mean a fine book, I read it over and over and over before it was due.
I read Johnny Tremain several times as a child and it still holds the same power over me. Johnny becomes a spy for the Sons of Liberty and in the process becomes a man.

August books for the #NewberyEpicChallenge!
📚 Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes
📚 From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Happy reading!
So I put The Seeds of America trilogy (see my last post) next to Johnny Tremain. Taking a closer look at my old copy and am flabbergasted at the blurb on its back flap of Forbes‘ non-fiction book on Paul Revere 🤯😡. This man is surprised a woman did such a great job on the topic!! Forbes‘ books came out in the 1940s.
For me this book was another grade school favorite. I tracked this one down for years, and only once I was visiting family in Alabama, I finally found it. Johnny‘s struggles remind us of the hard times we all have but his perseverance pushes us to be stronger as our own individuals. I still love this book even today.
#UCFSSEJOHNNYTREMAIN If you‘re new to Litsy simply refer back to this post or the hashtag above to see what we are saying about the book. If you post, you just use the hashtag so that we can see what you‘ve said. You should follow each member once they post. We will formally begin on Monday, January 20th.
#HomeschoolReads Our #November #ReadAloud is Johnny Tremain. My kids are LOVING the insults, so I have to stop them from calling each other a “pig in a louse.“ 😂 #novemberreadaloud #homeschool #homeschoolmamas #sonlight
Finished my reread just in time! Our book club decided to read a classic this month & this was picked when I admitted it was the first book that made me cry. I think it holds up. Lots that could be said about why it‘s a classic—too much for a short review but I couldn‘t help thinking how this book, Treasure Island & others like them—with young people overcoming obstacles, danger, adventure, world-saving—anticipate what we call YA today. Still fun!
Our YA/MG book club decided to go with a children‘s classic for our next book. This is this first book that ever made me cry—5th grade me really, really liked this book...even with the crying. I‘m eager to see how it holds up. After we talk about the book, we are going to talk about what makes a classic & discuss whether any of the 30+ books we‘ve read in book club qualifies as one...now or perhaps in the future. Should be another great meeting!

The perfect Independence Day read. A classic coming-of-age story set in colonial Boston. Johnny is a talented Silversmith Apprentice, but after a horrific accident he is forced to make a new life for himself. #Newbery

Off the big chamber and one step down was a smaller room designed as a dressing room. Mr. Lyte seemingly had used this as an office. Here was his desk, and above it a painting of his favorite ship, the #Unicorn. #QuotsyApr19

Working at a middle school gives me all sorts of opportunities to go back and read classics I've missed along the way
Discarded Johnny Tremain is sad .

I asked my husband what came to mind for him for #militia .
Chris - "What about the book we read in 8th grade? Johnny..."
Me - "Tremain?"
Chris - "Yep! He was part of the revolutionary militia."
Me - "I didn't like that book. He burned his hand."
Chris - "I don't remember that. I just liked all the historical stuff, and it was the first time I heard the word militia."
Well then, Johnny Tremain it is!

I haven't thought of this book in years, but #YoungAmericans jogged my memory! Who else read this in school? Is it still required reading?
#SeptemBowie
Reread/listened to this one along with my girls for their school. I LOVE reading about this period of American history-so fascinating. I remember reading this in my own schooling when I was young, so it's cool to read this with each of my kids as they use it in their classes.
As with many older books like this one, there are opportunities for discussion on current issues based on this plot.
The audiobook narrated by George Guidall is awesome.
I'm rereading this for the bazillionth time. I adore this book. I love books set in this time period, written for any age. I'm reading this along with my family.
🎧 I've listened to another Johnny Tremain audiobook before and I liked it (narrated by Grace Conlin). BUT! This is my favorite because it is narrated by George Guidall!! He is just a super fantastic reader.

I read this book when I was a kid, and I thought it was spectacular! It helped to fuel my interest in the history surrounding the American Revolution. Which consumed me for many years and allowed a teenage boy to converse on par with a professional historian who specialized in the Revolution. This is one of those books that I would say everyone should read.
When I think of #StarsandStripes I think of Patriots (which of course made me think of this book) My dad recommended this when I was in my historical fiction kick as a kid.

At the time, it felt like I was firmly in the minority when it came to liking this book in middle school.
We're driving to #Boston and #Salem for #vacation in a couple weeks. Any suggestions for juvenile fiction #audiobooks set in Boston or Salem to listen to along the way?
Yellow makes me smile...a Pantone named Mimosa makes me smile more. The memory of a librarian suggesting that I might like The Carved Wooden Ring after reading Johnny Tremain in 6th grade...brain smile. 💛📖💛
I couldn't find The Carved Wooden Ring as a Litsy option.😕

"We give all we have, lives, property, safety, skills...we fight, we die, for a simple thing. Only that a man can stand up." - Just as good as it was 30 some years ago.
This has been one of my favorite books since middle school. Love it!
