I'm not much of an audio person as far as reading is concerned, but it was a lovely experience to do this re-read as an audiobook.
As other #Pemberlittens have noted, I too picked up on the characters' ages this time around, Lord Middleton was a particular surprise, since I'd remembered him as an elderly gentleman, and it turned out he was only 40!
#JaneAustenThenAndNow

eeclayton Thanks @Crinoline_Laphroaig for launching this fun celebration of Austen ☺️ 6d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @eeclayton I'm loving it! It's such a joy to look forward to everyday! 6d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Every year I reread Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. I love her plucky older characters. Only to realize this year that I'm only 4 years younger than main character Elfrida. 😲 6d

My 4th time reading this & since I‘m not much of a rereader that says it all

This is the first time that the dialogue between Mr & Mrs John Dashwood at the beginning about what to do for his stepmother & stepsisters & how they didn‘t expect the mother to live another 15 yrs, only for it to later be revealed that she‘s not even 40 really got to me. I guess your perspective change with age

Finally I noticed Austen‘s snarkyness and I loved it

Crinoline_Laphroaig I have a friend who says books are different through older eyes. That's definitely true for me. Especially when I'm now older than the mother of the story. Glad you joined in! 6d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Is that a Danish Edition? It's beautiful. 6d
AnneCecilie @Crinoline_Laphroaig As you probably guessed, I‘m older too. The first time I read it I was around Marianne‘s age so almost 40 seemed ancient 6d
AnneCecilie @Crinoline_Laphroaig No, it‘s Norwegian, so not that far off 6d

Ch. 21/22: Buckle up, gang, the Palmers left in the blink of an eye; now the Sisters Steele are here, and Lucy is a stone-cold bitch. Learning that Elinor's Mr. F is Edward, she puts on a bullshit innocent act to bring Elinor in her confidence while actually staking her claim: "See this miniature, this letter? Notice that grimy hair ring? He's mine, back off." Elinor gets it loud and clear and is finally left alone to be "wretched" about it.

CaramelLunacy Ugh, so disingenuous. 😑 I just wanted to randomly ask you about Mrs. Ferrars so I could idly drop MY SECRET ENGAGEMENT into conversation... she deserves all the pinching from Lady Middleton's bratty children. 3w

Chapters 5 & 6: The Dashwoods leave Norland, which is actually heartbreaking, but of course Marianne milks her sadness in a "Hannah Montana Saying Goodbye"-worthy drama of her own making. But for real, it's terrible, and John and Fanny are total trashcans for driving them out. Over at the new digs, Mrs. D (who has never saved a cent in her life) makes expensive renovation plans and Sir John pops in with his ice-queen wife for an unwelcome welcome.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Marianne is such a drama queen! Loving the commentary! 4w

Yesterday was grey, warm, and rainy; today was sunny, breezy, and cooler. There are a lot of secret engagements and presumed engagements in this book. I‘m liking it. #audiowalk

Definitely the tagged book at 1811! Not my favorite Austen, but it was also my introduction to her work so I‘m glad I read it! 💛

This might be controversial but I had to read this for Literature and it was the only book in my high school career that I just couldn‘t do… I just didn‘t like it at all.
Made it halfway and gave up.

I absolutely adore Ang Lee‘s 1995 adaptation with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant & Alan Rickman tho…

#sundayfunday

BookmarkTavern Totally get that, it‘s not one of my favorite Austen books. Thank you for sharing! 11mo
SpellboundReader Oh no! That's the only Austen novel I have left to read. 😬 11mo
CarolynM I‘m with you. Didn‘t like the book enough to finish it, quite enjoyed the film. 11mo

batsy I didn't like S&S all that much in the past; it was my least favourite. But it has slowly become one of my favourites after I read the annotated version some years ago. Can't quite explain how a book transforms upon rereading that way 🙂 I adore the movie, too. So good! 11mo
Graywacke I‘ve only seen that 1995 movie, which is fantastic. 🙂 Haven‘t read it… 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Graywacke, I‘d say that‘s an excellent life choice! 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @batsy, I‘ve never tried an annotated version of a book. Love that you came back to it and found it better, I definitely believe that you can come across a book at the wrong time. 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, my poor opinion of the book has proved less controversial than I expected 🤣 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BeeCurious, reading it in high school probably wasn‘t the optimal time for it - never fear you might love it (or at least not loathe it) 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookmarkTavern, it was a fun question! I was going to say Princess Bride but I haven‘t read the book 🤣 (edited) 11mo

@Cupcake12

1. I hope to take a long walk every day with the pups, to continue cleaning and decluttering my house, to organize my #LitsyLove stuff and get caught up with my pen pal letters, and to practice gratitude each day.
2. The I-don't-know-what-in-the-hell-is-going-on book THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, and THE HOUSE AT RIVERTON.
3. introverted, sassy (how I'm feeling today anyway!)

I must admit this is the first Jane Austen book I‘ve ever read. I did enjoy it, though I do wish smacking some of these men over the head with a large book was possible. #AuthoraMonth

Texreader 😂😂 I‘m reading Pride and Prejudice for the first time and I‘m surprised I like it. Definitely there are people in this one who need a good smacking as well! 13mo
Soubhiville I agree! I‘m also reading P&P (my first Austen) and some smacking might improve some attitudes! 😆 @Texreader 13mo
CatLass007 Okay, sexist comment coming, but when in history don‘t men need smacking over the head with a book? @Soubhiville @Texreader (edited) 13mo

First finish of #FabulousFebruary - I couldn‘t resist finishing when the chapter for the day ended with the sudden arrival of Willoughby! Not my favorite Austen, but still very good, and only slightly confused by reading Wuthering Heights and a book of essays about Austen and her various works, and watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice all at the same time. 😆 Thanks to @BarkingMadRun for hosting! #PemberLittens

In general I like Colonel Brandon (I find Edward Ferrars something of a dishrag, so Brandon is definitely preferable), but this is decidedly creepy. This 35-year-old man comes over every day to stare at a seventeen-year-old twit? Not cool, Brando. Not cool.

I have decided to join in on the #pemberlittens reread of Sense and Sensibility. My edition, although not outwardly pretty, is beautiful inside with illustrations, essays, and a lot of helpful info about Jane‘s world. I‘m going to read the chapter a day along with the group but also read the extras in my edition. @BarkingMadRun

Sense & Sensibility has always been my favorite Austen movie adaption (Emma Thompson, amiright?) but this is the first time I‘ve read the book. I think it might be even better than the movie! The surprising funny moments, Eleanor‘s long suffering eyerolls, and Marianne as her foil. It‘s such a wonderful book.

Do any of my fellow #Pemberlittens sew? I found this pretty dress pattern and there is even an option for a step by step online class. I‘m going to go for it! If I ever go to Austenland, I‘ll be ready. Anyone want to join me? We could post progress and help each other out along the way.

This was my 3rd time reading this, but the last time was 9 yrs ago. I found myself caught up in the story even though I know the characters and the plot so well. Austen's writing never fails to pull me in completely. I‘ve always loved the sisters‘ relationship because my own sister and I are also very different, but love each other so much.

Thus us a reread, so I decided to do an audio this time. I think I appreciated it more now than when I did years ago. The horribleness of certain characters stands out so much more, the flaws of others as well. I'm pretty sure I could not have been so polite as Elinor when dealing with some of them. Overall enjoyable. #pemberlittens
