The Manchurian Candidate
The Manchurian Candidate | Richard Condon
14 posts | 13 read | 16 to read
A war hero and the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, Sergeant Raymond Shaw is keeping a deadly secret--even from himself. During his time as a prisoner of war in North Korea, he was brainwashed by his Communist captors and transformed into a deadly weapon--a sleeper assassin, programmed to kill without question or mercy at his captors' signal. Now he's been returned to the United States with a covert mission: to kill a candidate for US President. Shaw's former commanding officer, Major Bennett Marco, is the only one who knows his secret. And he must untangle a complex thread of lies, betrayal, and murder to uncover the truth of a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top of the US government--before it's too late. This compelling military psychological thriller is the basis for the 1962 adaptation starring Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury--and it will have you on the edge of your seat until the end.

Bailedbailed

Im on a bad run: 2 bails in a row😩 30 pages in, I‘m wondering why the author seems to hate all of his characters. I Googled and it seems Condon liked to “rage” at politics, authority, military. This book is supposed to be satire. Fair enough. For me, it‘s a weird kind of satire, not being any colours of the “amusing” spectrum and it‘s full of obnoxious characters. It‘s verbose and dull. It spawned 2 films, which I haven‘t seen🤷🏻Bailed on p. 81

dabbe I never knew there was a book. I loved the movie with Angela Lansbury, though! #allhailthebail! #betterbooksahead 🙌🏻 2mo
The_Book_Ninja @dabbe I guess I need to watch it to see what happens! 2mo
dabbe @The_Book_Ninja Ooh, it\'s so worth it. 🤩 2mo

RamsFan1963 @The_Book_Ninja Make sure you see the one with Lansbury, Sinatra and Laurence Harvey. The remake with Denzel Washington & Liev Schreiber isn't good at all. 2mo
The_Book_Ninja @RamsFan1963 I will👍🏼…the story was shaping up well, I just wasn‘t enjoying the writing. 2mo
Bookwomble I've never read the book (and never will given your review), but join in the chorus of approbation for the original movie 😊 1mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble Qb:50 to rent. My weekend is set 1mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I hope that's a good investment! Having recommended it, I'd caution that I watched it on late night telly when I was about 10 and my dad was at the pub! But it obviously left an impression 😄 And it was Oscar nominated, so... 1mo
Bookwomble Did you get around to watching the film? 🎥 1mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble yes. It‘s a good story. Maybe I should have carried on with the book 🤷🏻 1mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Life's too short to stick with books you aren't getting anything from. There's plenty more impatiently waiting for you! Glad you enjoyed the film 😊 1mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble 100% agreed Wombie! I was worried about a slump. But I‘m back on track and enjoying my current reads🙌🏼 1mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja It's a relief when that reading-flow returns 😌 1mo

#ThreeLineThursday #TLT

I did pretty well with my score on this one & I loves me some good movie villains!😱

Favorites (Going with 6)
My Top 2:
-Mrs. John Iselin of The Manchurian Candidate was the perfect amount of cold cruel evil & I‘m a fan of the book & both movie versions (although the original was best).
-Dr. Hannibal Lecter of The Silence of the Lambs-both book & movie freaked me the heck out in the best way! 😱

Other Favorites: ⬇️

DebinHawaii -The Wicked Witch of the West 🧙
-Alex Forrest 🐰
-Jane Hudson 🤡
-Cruella Di Vil (She has her own song!) 🐶

Anyone want to play? Link to the quiz is on @Dabbe ‘s post. 🤗

Angela Lansbury was delightfully shrewd as Jessica Fletcher, but her (Oscar-nominated) performance in The Manchurian Candidate was downright chilling. #RIP 😢

EvieBee I haven‘t seen this one yet! I‘ll have to fix that. 2y
Dragon Totally agree - one of the best villains in cinema 💔 2y

One of my favorite #Conspiracy novels. I also really like both the 1962 & 2004 movies.

Pickpick

This book is heavy on the politics and I found it kinda slow. And for a book about an assassin, it wasn‘t very murder-y. But, at about the last 100 pages, it gets good! And the ending is great! 👍🏻

Bailedbailed

Just couldn't get into this one. The writing style wasn't for me, and I wasn't interested enough in the story to stick with it. Maybe I'll watch the movie.

As you can see from my bullet journal, I'm giving the Manchurian Candidate a shot. Have never seen the movie (either version) but obviously I know the general premise.

Day20 #FeistyFeb #PresidentialReads I usually prefer reading about people around the president rather than the president-but here's a few that fit: Manhunt-the 12 days between Lincoln's assassination & John Wilkes Booth's capture, Madame Presidentess-novel of Victoria Woodhull, the 1st woman to run for president, Manchurian Candidate-political thriller w/an election & from my TBR-Upstairs at the White House-behind the scenes w/the first families.

LauraJ I really enjoyed Manhunt. 8y
DebinHawaii @LauraJ Me too! A friend recommended it when it came out and I liked it much more than I thought I would! 👍📚 8y

#augustphotochallenge #politicsandbooks I thought my only political books were on food politics but then remembered this gem of a political thriller, published in 1959 during The Cold War. It's creepy, dark & twisted. My dad had me watch the excellent 1962 movie-sometime in the 80s & I bought the book after seeing the 2004 remake. If you like conspiracy theories, mind control & intricate plot twists, it still holds up today. #augustofpages 👍📚

BarbaraTheBibliophage I have read a lot of food politics books as well! Also medical politics. What's your favorite? 8y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraTheBibliophage Hmm... That's a tough one. I don't know that I can claim one favorite but my top would be both Food Politics & What to Eat by Marion Nestle, Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, Food Matters by Mark Bittman, Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, We the Eaters by Ellen Gustafson & it's so quick & simple but I love Food Rules (and also The Omnivore's Dilemma) by Michael Pollen. I am sure I am forgetting some! How about you? 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Mark Bittman is a huge favorite of mine. He wrote a Kindle Single that I love called 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage I love Michael Pollan as well and Marion Nestle. Pollan's In Defense of Food is so great. I also loved Maria Rodale's 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I haven't heard of Ellen Gustafson so thanks for that one! 8y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraTheBibliophage Cool--I adore Bittman & have all his cookbooks too. I have not read the single or Rodale's book so I am adding them to my TBR stack. In Defense of Food is another great one too. 👍😀 8y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraTheBibliophage The Gustafson book does a good job with food choices & the impact on both health & economic factors. I think you'll enjoy it. 👍 8y
