"When you remain in solitude, do not think of the amusements in the town...You should turn your mind inwardly, and then you'll find your way...
...The more Ups and Downs the more Joy I feel---The greater the fear...the greater the happiness I feel..."
"...after lights out and you're not sleepy there's ample time to just remember the world and indeed savor its sweetness if any..."
The title story was not this short story collection's strongest. But Chiang writes some compelling and thought-provoking pieces. Think a literary Black Mirror. Check it out!
One of my gifts from my wife on International Book Giving Day - our version of Valentine's Day! Thank you @StacksNShelves ! 😘
Be prepared to dig in for the long haul on this one. Still, if you love reading about urban issues and Los Angeles in general, then definitely check this book out. It is for sure laced with liberal/socialist bias, but the general history Davis writes about is compelling. I can see why this was his dissertation thesis that was rejected, but it nonetheless make a great read!
Amazing collection of short stories so far. I have read three of them, including "Story of Your Life," - what the movie "Arrival" was based off of. I have a new appreciation for the short story. I have also read a few of the stories in the giant "Big Book of Science Fiction" and can see just how liberating the short story form can be as compared to a full-fledged novel.
Fascinating
Thought is the thought of thought.
