Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre | Charlotte Bront
Brontes novel about a shy, quiet governess who becomes a tutor in a great house and falls in love with its lonely and mysterious master is one of the great classics of English literature. Unique in its attention to the thoughts and feelings of a female protagonist, Jane Eyre was ahead of its time as a proto-feminist text. When it was published in 1847, however, Bronte was attacked by critics for what they felt was anti-Christian sentiment in her unflinching critique of the oppressions of Victorian society.

5✨ The re-read just hit me so much better. Jane goes through a lot of heartache starting at a young age. When something is going right it will quickly turn and not work out. While things finally go her way in the end there is still many challenges to overcome. I feel like this is a true romance where things fall apart sometimes and you just have to move on and try to be stronger as time goes on.

Ruthiella This is a book I have read in my 30s, 40s and 50s and each time I get something different from it. A true classic. 6mo

July's Favourite made me realise that Northanger Abbey might have to take a step down from my favourite Classic of all time...

I absolutely adored Jane Eyre, from the neglected little girl to the happily married Wife, and everything in-between.

I loved rereading Jane Eyre! I remembered the plot, but not the specifics or the writing itself, and I loved the experience of reading this illustrated copy! #pemberlittens #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #Spookoween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #PointsAThon @dieareader @GHABI4ROSES #AutumnAtoZ @Texreader

I looked with timorous joy towards a stately house: I saw a blackened ruin. … The front was, as I had I‘ve seen it in a dream, but a shell-like wall, very high and fragile looking, perforated with paneless windows: no roof, no battlements, no chimneys - all had crashed in. #Pemberlittens

I must not forget that these coarsely-clad little peasants are of flesh and blood as good as the scions of gentlest genealogy; and that the germs of native excellence, refinement, intelligence, kind feeling, are as likely to exist in their hearts as in those of the best-born. #pemberlittens

Ghosts are usually pale Jane.

This, sir, was purple: the lips were swelled and dark; the brow furrowed; the black eyebrows widely raised over the blood-shot eyes. Shall I tell you of what it reminded me?

You may.

Of the foul German spectre - the Vampyre.

But what has befallen the night? The moon was not yet set, and we were all in shadow: I could scarcely see my master‘s face, near as I was. And what ailed the chestnut tree? It writhed and groaned; while wind roared in the laurel walk, and came sweeping over us. #pemberlittens

Just realized that my copy of Jane Eyre is an abridged version 🤷🏼‍♀️ I didn't even know it was done in these older books.

I'm so disappointed 😔
Gonna try and find an audiobook and catch up on what I missed.

melissajayne You can find inexpensive unbridged versions of the book 2y

Merry Christmas!!!!
Christmas is by far my favorite holiday, as I kid I was trying to drag my parents downstairs from 6 am on...As a parent I am so incredibly grateful to be blessed with a kid who likes to sleep in...I feel like I already got a present this morning, time to drink my coffee, let my anxiety meds kick in and drown myself in my favorite book.

Jane Eyre is my favorite book, it‘s really only one of two classic books I‘ve ever been able to get all the way through and this poor well worn copy was brand new when I got it about 10 years ago and read it for the first time.
I‘ve decided I want to re-read it every Christmas.
What‘s your favorite book? Do you reread it often?

MsMelissa I‘m currently binge watching Enterprise on Netflix. I‘m a huge Star Trek fan, too, but this is my first time watching this series. It gets dissed a lot, but I‘m quite enjoying it. 4y
twohectobooks @Book_Fiend_Melissa awesome! Enterprise is very flawed but it pretty quite good in the later seasons and I really loved Trip Tucker. 4y
MsMelissa Archer will never win favourite captain for me (my loyalty lies with Captain Kirk), but Tucker has become one of my favourite Star Trek characters ever. He‘s awesome. I‘m halfway through season 3. 4y

twohectobooks @Book_Fiend_Melissa I love him so much! I‘ve also been loving the Enterprise references in some of the newer Trek series. 4y
MsMelissa I‘m not sure I‘ll watch Discovery until it‘s over. I‘m a fan of binge-watching 🤣. My favourites are TNG and DS9, and I love the recent movie reboots of the original show — the casting was spot on. I think I‘ll probably rewatch the original series after I finish Enterprise. 4y
MsMelissa I‘ve finished Enterprise, except I refused to watch the very last episode! I already knew how it ended, and since I refuse to accept that they killed Trip off, I prefer to imagine my own ending after the end of Terra Prime. 4y
