Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story | Cameron Crowe
14 posts | 6 read | 15 to read
Welcome to lunch court. That's Spicoli over there, trying hard to unwrap a bologna sandwich. His eyes are still red-rimmed from the three bowls of dope he smoked after his morning surf. Stacy Hamilton doesn't look any different even though she finally lost her virginity last night. Linda Barrett, Stacy's best bud, wants to hear all about it. After all, she gives lessons. And here comes Brad Hamilton, king of the lunch court and prince of the fast-food employee hierarchy. Brad's guy who takes pride in his fries. Mike Damone takes pride in the Attitude, which he developed in Philly, his hometown, where "life is cheap." And here's that wussy Mark Ratner. Girls make him sweat. He'll do more than sweat when he turns up in the yearbook class picture with something missing.

This was my first 'The book was so much better than the movie' experience. I remember watching the movie and thinking 'this can't be the same thing as that book I read.' #TheBookIsAlwaysBetter

Eggs Well done! 2y
mandarchy I had no idea it was a book! I was talking to (a perfectly mature adult) about this movie for a moment before realizing that they looked confused. Apparently not everyone has seen this movie. Which is funny. I don't really watch movies anymore - so if it came out after 1990 - I probably haven't seen it. So I can't be judging the young people. 2y

TheBookgeekFrau @mandarchy Yup, it came out in 1981. And I know EXACTLY what you mean; I was talking to one of my daughter's army buddies who is 22 and I mentioned MacGyver and then was like, 'oh wait, do you even know who MacGyver is?' 😅 (he did lol) 2y
mandarchy @TheBookgeekFrau I had a co-worker stare at me in complete oblivion when I said something about God's cigar. She had never seen or heard of George Burns. BTW, he wrote one of my all-time favorite books about Gracie Allen. 2y
TheBookgeekFrau @mandarchy I didn't know George Burns wrote a book! But then again, being God and all 🤣 Yeah, I can just picture the stare you got for that one!! 2y

Read this a year before the movie came out. Don‘t think I need to say it but #TheBookWasBetter 😁

#ReadingResolutions Day13 #BookToMovie

Melissa_J I had no idea this was a book! 7y
TheBookgeekFrau @Melissa_J Cool, right?! There was so much more character depth in the book. The movie‘s only justice to the character Linda was Phoebe Cates lol 7y
Nute I didn‘t know the movie was from a book and it‘s a true story??? 7y
TheBookgeekFrau @Nute Yeah, reporter went ‘undercover‘ as a HS senior for a year. There‘s a more recent book of the same ilk 7y

😎 Fast Times. I accidentally quote it nearly every day. I'm Mr. Hand, btw. ✋

I didn‘t know Fast Times at Ridgemont High was a book for a few years after I saw the movie. For a few years after that I tried hard to find the book, but I was never successful. #didyouknowbooktoscreen

Happy early birthday Liberty!! I hope you have fun 📚🎂📚🍰📚! This book was a gift from my sister for my 17th birthday ...a very long time ago 😱. We did get to see the movie soon after 😊. #LIBERTHDAY

( @Cinfhen funny you mentioned this just yesterday!)

Christine I should probably read this one since the high school upon which it is based is in the neighborhood to which we recently moved! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Christine How cool -- Clairemont HS? I have a friend who went there, but a few years after the events took place. Good luck with finding a copy! 7y
Christine Yes, Clairemont, and fun re: your friend! I just put a library hold on the ONE copy apparently still owned by the San Diego system (not held by any of the Clairemont branches, where they ought to have it on principle! 😉). 7y

ValerieAndBooks @Christine Possibly because it's been so long out of print, any other copies they had might have "disappeared ". Curious what you think after you read it! 7y
Christine Good point re: disappearing!! 7y
Dogearedcopy OMG! This is such a hard book to find! Wow! (edited) 7y
Cinfhen That is AMAZING 😍😍😍😍I'm feeling the world is totally aligned today ⚡️✨⚡️✨⚡️ 7y
LeahBergen I love this!!!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Dogearedcopy as a kid/teen, I didn't get to own many books so it was kind of a big deal that my sis got this for me. I've hung on to it all these years mainly because so much of this was like my HS years! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Cinfhen yeah, I honestly don't know how it's possible I'm old enough to have gotten this as a 17th birthday present...I was floored when you mentioned it was the 35th anniversary of the movie (and by default, this cover also)! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen I honestly wish I still had my checkerboard VANs from that time...they became all the rage became of Jeff Spicoli wearing them in the movie! 7y

Purrfectpages Years ago I tried to get the Fast Times novel from the library, but I could never find it:( 7y
Reviewsbylola I had no idea that was originally a book. Great movie!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks Good book and movie! I'm so glad I still have my copy. It's been out of print for years, so anyone wanting to read it now has to cough up a lot of $$ -- and libraries likely no longer have a copy. 7y
Cinfhen Ha! That's funny @Robothugs ☺️😂I know, it's really difficult to get a copy of the book @Purrfectpages @ValerieAndBooks thank god the movie is soooo good! This summer is the 35th anniversary @britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola 💗 7y

I have mixed feelings about this book. I admire Cameron Crowe for researching and writing it. The writing was excellent. It was a gentle easy read, but as a story, I think it worked far better as a movie. The movie had the 'physicalness' that the book lacked. It is worth the read for the clever structure that gave the feeling of a complete school year.

PenguinInFlight I had no idea this was a book. 😧 *hangs head in shame* 8y

Spent all night re-living my HS years with this. Hit this last chapter at 2am. Crowe was pitch-perfect depicting teen life back then (at 20yo, he went incognito there in '79, hard to do today). Yes a lot of talk about sex and trying to have it. I have to figure out how to glue the pages back in, they kept falling out as I read 😰. A copy is now >$100. But Crowe's site has excerpts: http://www.theuncool.com/books/fast-times-at-ridgemont-high/

Dogearedcopy I don't know how bad it's falling apart; but it may just need a bit of binding glue, a steady hand, and a press... Check with librarian to see if they can help/teach you! 8y
becausetrains I've had good luck with using an iron to heat the spine (through a thick piece of fabric like jeans) and resetting the pages once the glue melts. (Practice on a trashy book first!) If it's an older book though, it uses the wrong kind of glue, so you'd need to use bookbinding glue like @Dogearedcopy says. Librarians are a great help! 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Dogearedcopy @becausetrains thanks for the suggestions! Pages would fall out in clusters (what's a better word) while trying to handle carefully when reading. My previous post shows that it's a trade paperback (I don't think it was ever in hardback). It's 34 years old, so not super old, but now rare bc it's out of print. Next time I go to the library I'll ask for suggestions! Thanks again! 8y

quirkyreader A copy of it came through work the other day. It is probably gone by now. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @quirkyreader Wow, was it shelved at a normal price for your work? If it was picked up, wonder if the new owner knows it could fetch a lot. 8y
quirkyreader When I saw it I wanted to get it. I think it might be a re-print because it had a newer cover. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @quirkyreader hmm interesting, it has been out of print for over 30 years. Maybe it was just like-new? 8y
quirkyreader It was the edition of the girl in the yellow skirt. It got moved to the rare books/sell on eBay section. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @quirkyreader ooh, the first cover version. My cover is the movie tie-In. Yep that's the section it should be in 😊 8y
quirkyreader If I am looking at the proper posting on eBay it is up to $123.00. Hopefully it will get re-printed someday. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @quirkyreader that sounds about right. When I was at the author 's website I saw an interview where he said he might consider allowing re-printing but with a newer intro. The article was back in 2002 I believe and it still hasn't happened... 8y

Books about #innocence -- my very first thought went to this book. All the characters were so keen on losing their innocence. My sister gave this to me on my 17th birthday back in 1982 (I know because of her inscription inside). It's way better than the movie. And now I can't help but re-read and be sucked back into the lives of Linda, Stacy, Brad, Jeff Spicoli, etc. I wish I still had my checkerboard VANS from HS. @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

ScrappyMags I never even knew this was a book. Love the movie! Lol 8y
Dogearedcopy I did not know this was a book either (And if I ever saw this, I probably thought it was a novelization if the movie!) I still remember and love the scenes with Spicoli and Mr. Hand 😄 8y
ValerieAndBooks @ScrappyMags @Dogearedcopy I was shocked a while back to find that a copy of this book is now worth a lot. Evidently Mr. Crowe blocked reprints early on. I've informed my family so they don't sell it at a garage sale for 25 cents after I die, lol. I have the movie on VHS and probably will want to watch again now 😂. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @ScrappyMags @Dogearedcopy also I think most people don't know the book came out of Mr. Crowe posing as a HS student for a year and that it's based on real-life events from that time. 8y
