This is one of the best books in the series so far. A good story, and police investigation to find out why a ā€nice‘ man has been shot! Alongside this we have a mystery surrounding a ā€ghost isle‘ and a woman trying to escape from a very abusive husband. Plenty to get your teeth stuck into in this book, although like with others in the series it could be shorter but that seems to be the style of these books. I loved the supporting characters.

Andrew65 @BarbaraBB No reason why you can‘t read this as a standalone, the plot is all within this book with nothing relating to the other books. Where characters are concerned it gives you the information you need within the book, you may miss a bit of character development but not impair enjoyment of the book. 4y

7th book Patrik Hedstom series. Best book so far. Mats Sverin, financial director for Fjallbacka, is murdered. Nathalie, Sverin‘s high school sweetheart, has returned to Fjallbacka with her 5 yr old son. Can she shed some light on Mats death? Does she have secrets of her own?
I found this book to be long-winded but the excellent plot held my attention. Lots of twists and turns kept me reading until the surprise cliffhanger ending. Recommended.

I want to say "WOW! What awesome storytelling!" But I can't because there are about 100 extra pages that did nothing to the main plot other than to fulfill the purpose of a possible red herring. #NordicNoir @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @EadieB @Crazeedi

Butterfinger I enjoy knowing the main characters and the families. The subplots that surround them don't bother me. I'm glad Bertil is happy. He is still going to do dumb things, but he is remorseful when his actions caused a death. 4y

AnneCecilie I like getting to know the characters and that they feel real and aren‘t stereotypes. And I like all the subplots and the distractions that Lackberg has in her crimes. I just like it better when Erica is a part of the story and not just sitting at home complaining about everything 4y

Butterfinger I liked how Lachberg tied an abused woman from the past to comfort the woman in the present. I liked it more than I did the Badis project. 4y

AnneCecilie For me it didn‘t really add that much. But it made the revelation about her kid a shock, at least to me. @Butterfinger 4y

Tove_Reads Definitely a bold organization acting outside the books, but someone has to in these cases when everything legally acceptable has been done, but nothing helps. 4y

AnneCecilie I felt they did what they could to help the women and in cases of abuse someone has to help them. Considering the personal cost, the people working in these kinds of jobs are hero‘s. 4y

Butterfinger Extraneous. The book didn't need it. I guess it was used as a red herring. It just seems wasteful to add that story when it had nothing to do with the main mystery. If I had been Bertil, I would have thrown that cheap whiskey in Erlings face. 4y

Tove_Reads I found it to be weird and pointless, unless it had something to do with the next book. 4y

AnneCecilie I think @butterfinger is on to something, it was there to give us more people to suspect. It also shows how easy it is to fool Erling who thinks he is a man who knows everything. 4y

Butterfinger Everything about it was so sad. I can understand why she needed to be drawn into that dark place. So sad how she is mad at Dan. I hope they have a breakthrough. 4y

Tove_Reads I‘m super tired of reading about how hard it is to be a mother. We get it. But, now E has three kids. I don‘t see it‘ll get better because of that. Anna has gone through too much, but I still hope she‘ll let Dan in and very soon. He‘s so good to her, and nothing is his fault. 4y

AnneCecilie I didn‘t like the cliffhanger and when this books starts, it‘s obvious that they all survived. I don‘t understand why she has to put Anna through so much pain. @Butterfinger @Tove_Reads 4y

EadieB Anna's pain is so unnecessary. She already had so much to deal with her husband's abuse. I'm getting tired of Erica's motherhood too. Erica needs to get back to work and Anne needs to treat Dan better. @AnneCecilie @Butterfinger @ToveReads 4y

The last book left us with several cliffhangers, and again Läckberg is moving fast and it‘s several months later, but we get to see the consequences

This books deals heavily with women that are abused by the husbands, and we meet several women who has run away, an organization that helps protect them and its employees

I love this series. I probably say that every time I post about it. This is number 7. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a ton happening in this one and I didn't have it all figured out before the ending which is always good.

Patrick is coping with life after a health crisis and Erica with life after a tragic accident. There was something essential missing from this book that I find in other LĆ¤ckebergs, but I can't put my finger on it. I'm tired of their home life. Decent read, least fave in the series. #NordicNoir

Tove_Reads @EadieB Still worth to read it, but I‘m just tired of the family life aspect. It‘s ok in one or two books, but it gets of fast in crime books. Might be better than I gave it credit for, but I‘d like more of police work and Erica as a professional. 4y

EadieB @Tove_Reads I agree that her domestic life is getting too much and she needs to go back to work. Everyone likes the first book because she was working and now she is a boring character. 4y

Read-eat-travel-repeat There are actually 2 more - Buried Angels and The Ice Child. I thought this one was the most recent too - for whatever reason, the other ones are harder to find. I think that the English translations and US releases are behind the Swedish ones. I'm going to have to order them through ILL , I can't wait! 8y

Matilda @Bookgirl I can see crime fans, especially of Swedish crime, being fans. Lots of characters and things to keep you interested. I started losing a bit of it holding my attention for like 15% towards the end. I had figured a good deal out and the rest I didn't need but that's subjective for what I like. I could have done without what felt problematic to me of having the gay husband rape his wife. 8y

I feel a little bad not liking an ARC from NetGalley. Seems so ungrateful! But this is not a successful book. There are some good ideas here, good characters, and a twist I didn't expect. That said, it's a mess. Far too many plot points that are pointless, far too many character POVs that aren't needed, and just a general lack of a good editor. I don't recommend this.

Only clocked an hour and 18 minutes of reading today due to my weekend trip with my daughter. I'm not complaining; any time I can bond with my teen is totally worth it. Now I've moved from one kind of "Lost" to another as we continue our binge of the TV show on Netflix. (Yay for iPads!) Sneaking in a little reading for #24in48. So far this book has at least 8 different viewpoints from the present and 2 from the past. A few pages at a time, at most, from each POV. Feeling a bit scattered. Hope it improves!
