Rose Marshall died in 1952 in Buckley Township, Michigan, run off the road by a man named Bobby Crossa man who had sold his soul to live forever, and intended to use her death to pay the price of his immortality. Trouble was, he didnt ask Rose what she thought of the idea. Its been more than sixty years since that night, and shes still sixteen, and shes still running. They have names for her all over the country: the Girl in the Diner. The Phantom Prom Date. The Girl in the Green Silk Gown. Mostly she just goes by Rose, a hitchhiking ghost girl with her thumb out and her eyes fixed on the horizon, trying to outrace a man who never sleeps, never stops, and never gives up on the idea of claiming whats his. Shes the angel of the overpass, shes the darling of the truck stops, and shes going to figure out a way to win her freedom. After all, its not like it can kill her. You cant kill whats already dead.

📖 HA! No. Sadly, I do not. And I worked at a car dealership for a number of years, so it's particularly shameful that I never bothered to learn! 🙈

📖 Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire! My book buddy Dave gifted me this book years ago and features a hitchhiking ghost! 😱 It's a fantastic read! Thanks, @DaveGreen7777 ! 🥰

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 11mo
DaveGreen7777 Awww, glad you liked this book, Becky! 😀 I actually have a copy myself, I might have to read it this year as I go through my bookshelf of terror! 😱👻 11mo
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 You totally should! It was so good! I'm so glad you gave it to me! You really do pick out the BEST book presents! 😍 11mo

Welcome to the world of hitchhiking ghost Rose Marshall—run off the road on prom night 1952 by a man who sold his soul to drive forever young. Originally published in several short stories, Sparrow Hill Road reads as time jumping but still narratively cohesive vignettes following Rose through life, death, and afterlife, learning the rules of the Ghost Roads. THESE VIBES made for such a fun read for my work trip to Winslow, Arizona off Route 66!

I love how, in this entire series, the roads and highways are almost their own character within the story.

I love traveling in any fashion, but there‘s something about the long stretch of asphalt disappearing into the horizon that just holds my heart.

#SundayFunday Hope you‘re all having a safe and fun day, and don‘t forget to tag me!

Rose is hitchhiking ghost, and while most urban legends paint her as a murderous ghost, she actually saves those she cans and helps others to not die alone when she can't. This first book is a series of short stories, and the timeline is a bit all over the place, but oh how I wish the Winchester Boys had found Rose and teamed up. The ghost mythology itself is worth the read!

Seanan McGuire could write instruction manuals and I‘d read them.

This is a collection of short stories all about Rose, a ghost who hitchhikes across North America trying to save motorists from impending accidents. The stories were originally written to appear one per month in a magazine over the course of a year. They flow together nicely into a novel in pieces.

This would be a perfect Halloween read, or really anytime you want light horror.

Soubhiville It takes place in lots of different states, but I used it for #Wisconsin for #ReadingtheStates2021, as a chunk took place in Madison. Would also work for #Maine or #Michigan, also parts of #Canada. 4y

I really enjoyed this tale of a hitchhiking ghost and her adventures in the afterlife. The introduction mentions the winding path this book evolved from which included songs and short fiction. I‘m now curious what the second installment holds.

I loved this. Sparrow Hill Road is kind of a ghost memoir - it's the story of Rose Marshall, a teenager killed by a jerk in his bid to stay young forever. Sadly for Bobby, Rose escapes before he can claim her soul. She's still dead, but as a type of road ghost, we get to follow along as she navigates the rules of being dead. I enjoyed the lore and Rose. Highly recommend if you want ghosts, not gore. #screamathon

Not strictly book-related but today has been a good day. Work was busy, but not traumatic. I got one project finished and managed to make a good dent in two more work projects with only 30 minutes of work-at-home time. Did 3 rows on my 2018 temperature afghan. Started this audiobook, which I‘m LOVING, and now I‘m going to read a chapter or two of Trolls before heading to sleep. Here‘s hoping you all have a great week, too! 😘

Rose Marshall is hitchhiking across the country, acting as a guide to those who die on the road, all while trying to keep ahead of the man who killed her.

Y'all I love ghost stories so much!

I loved how it felt like an exploration of how a story shifts and changes as it's told, while also building this amazing other world.

It felt a little disjointed at times, like tumblr posts collected together. But I will be picking up the sequel! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Clare-Dragonfly Oooh. I didn‘t really like the one Seanan McGuire book I read (first in the Toby Daye series) but this sounds so good… 5y

‘Most of what we know about the life and death of Rose Marshall, often referred to as “the Girl at the Diner” or “the Ghost of Sparrow Hill Road,” is circumstantial and unclear. We have verified the dates in this document to the best of our ability, but as most of the participants are deceased, we are unable to swear that all the dates are accurate.

Cailey_Mac *continued* Of this much, we are sure: Rose Marshall lived. Rose Marshall died. And as of the time of this writing, Rose Marshall does not yet rest in peace. 5y

I liked the world and the characters. The episodic structure sometimes made it hard to feel compelled to read it when so many other books are trying to pull focus. I‘ll read the second one for sure. I think I‘ll like it better now that I know what to expect.

The book was organized into connected tales: true stories, ghost stories, campfire stories and scary stories. Decent world building, interesting characters, and everything you needed for a ghost story, but in the end nothing really resonated with me. Someone else might love it, but it was meh for me.

I loved the world-building,just like everything she ever writes. Her worlds are always so intricate that you almost have to believe that it's real!I enjoyed it,but felt kinda like the first 2/3 were prequel short stories, which I guess were necessary to introduce the characters and let the reader know about the past, but it didn't feel like a cohesive story until the last third.I also didn't like that time was not linear at all. Will continue series

We're getting so close! It's very difficult to finish an audiobook when 2 people that work full time are listening to it together - even though we had 2 days off together (Christmas almost didn't count though- we were going from family to family). Anyway, this book is written a little differently from Seanan's others, but still includes her flair for intricate mythology, which is what I love most about her work

DGRachel I think this is the book of hers that I have in print. It was recommended by a local bookseller. Someday I‘ll get to it... 6y
rjsthumbelina @DGRachel I know that feeling! I love her October Daye series and her Wayward Children series both. So good. This one still has the really intricately developed mythology behind the stories that I love, but the plots tend to jump all over the place, which is a little jarring. It probably would make more sense in print than in audio 6y

Finished! This is, to me, the ghost story version a fairytale retelling. It takes myths and legends AND GHOST STORIES and tells the story of one of the ghosts. If you ever told a ghost story, listened to a ghost story you should read this book. It‘s a wild ride with some neat little twists, especially at the end. Those we meet in life and death truly are important. Bittersweet but worth it.

I stayed up too late reading and now I‘m at work and all I can think of is getting back to this book. It‘s good, and a super fast read. It‘s a ghost story but not scary (so far). It take urban legends and ghost stories and creates a story that ties them together. For anyone looking for a spooky read for October that‘s not going to scare the living daylights out of you, this might be a good fit.

DGRachel The assistant manager at Barnes and Noble brought me this book when she went to the back to pull a new release I was looking for, saying based on the other books I was buying, she highly recommended it. Nice to see Litsy love for it, too! 6y
