This is my third Ann Patchett, and like the other two that involved semi-utopias cut off or estranged from the outside world (e.g., opera hostages or Amazonian tribe/scientists), Tom Lake features two: a Michigan cherry farm during the pandemic and a theater community by the lake of the title. There's always trouble threatening paradise, but unlike most of her literary peers...👇
Billypar ...Patchett seems to draw more energy from the warm moments than the tragic ones. At times, I wondered if it would be too much, but it mostly wasn't. The scenes were genuinely sweet because the characters were so lifelike and real. And even though I'm not quite as old as the lead and don't have 3 daughters on a cherry farm, I sympathized with how much she preferred her simple life to her brush with celebrity as a young woman. 4d
