You Can't Keep a Good Woman Down
You Can't Keep a Good Woman Down: Stories | Alice Walker
In Alice Walkers second story collection, women stand their ground in the midst of crisis This collection builds on Alice Walkers earlier work, the much-praised In Love & Trouble. But unlike her first collection of stories, the women in these tenderly wrought tales face their problems head on, proving powerful and self-possessed even when degraded by otherssometimes by those closest to them. But even as the female protagonists face exploitation, social asymmetries, and casual cruelties, Walker leavens her stories with ample wit and, as always, an eye for the redemptive power of love. A collection that reveals a master of fiction approaching the fullness of her talent, these are the stories Walker produced while penning The Color Purple. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

These collection of stories are about Black womanhood, touching on various topics like sexuality, lust, abortion, porn, rape, race, and many others. They‘re insightful however I‘m somewhat disappointed. A handful of them stood out for me - Nineteen Fifty-Five, The Lover, The Abortion, and Laurel; the others weren‘t so impressive.

#MayMoms - Groovy: I couldn‘t wait to get to today‘s prompt because ‘groovy‘ is a captivating, super dope word. It drips the vibe of sunshine, frenetic energy and hip/trendy intensity. There was a giddiness in finding (the) someone or some book to fit the description. Actually I had someone in mind the entire time. Author…Alice Walker.👇🏽

Nute She delivers grooviness with a pervasive look and style of those times and these times too. But more than diggin‘ afros, head scarves, psychedelic prints and platform shoes; she (re)presents with a strong awareness of self, potency, depth, color saturation, and an unwavering voice of fair treatment for women and all ordinary folk.
She vibes groovy on all levels 💯

Nute @Eggs I like the use of the word “authentic” when reflecting upon Alice Walker.🙂 2y
Nute @Dragon I agree!🙂 2y
Nute @TrishB Thank you, Trish! Your words are always kind!💕 2y
Nute @kspenmoll Thank you, Katherine! Alice Walker came to mind immediately after reading the print. Awhile ago, I had come across a very cool photo of her wearing a bright colorful head scarf and large dangling earrings with a ‘so what‘ expression on her face, but I couldn‘t find it again on the Internet. This photo works well.💕 (edited) 2y
Nute @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks, Misty! I am enjoying the prompts for Hashtag MayMoms.💕 2y

Happy Birthday Alice Walker! Born in Eatonville, Georgia on this day in 1944, Alice Walker has - since the 1970s - been writing beautiful, soul-touching poetry, fiction, essays, and more. I feel gratefully enriched by her body of work. My stack only represents a portion. #alicewalker #blackwomenwriters

Nute Seeing this stack of books gives me so much joy!💕 3y

Some of these were great while others fell flat. Race, gender, relationships....these three themes are pretty consistently and thoughtfully included.

Alice Walker. I mean what more can a person say. This collection has all the things you could want. Social commentary, humor (the first story has really stuch with me), sadness and just pure great writing.

This story feels like some real Get Out level shit...jesus. I can't believe they categorized it as a comedy, that's just so wrong.

The other half of the African-American display. Hopefully you can better make out the covers and titles. Have you read any of these, do any seem TBR-worthy for you? #LitsyLovesLibraries

CathyJ I am currently listening to Homegoing on audio and recently bought The Underground Railroad. 7y
SG2014 In high school, my friends and I would walk through the library and pick out books with the ugliest covers.... Roots was one of them...I felt bad for it, so I decided I should read it. It was amazing and doubly so because I only realized at the end, it was a true story. 7y
azulaco Roots really is amazing. Homegoing, The Underground Railroad, and Song of Solomon are all good too. I‘ve only read Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin, but based on that I‘d add any of his other works to my TBR. He‘s incredible. 7y

So after I wrote out my #januarytbr for book clubs and for the poetry challenge, I looked around my TBR and my bookshelves for other books that work well for January. I decided to go with a feminist protest theme to commemorate the Women's March last year. I think these books may help fire me up for the fight to come.

Natasha.C.Barnes Ok, so Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist isn't really about feminism but it is about protest, plus it's partially read left over from 2017. 7y
bookloo Screenshotting this so I can add to my TBR. Some of these I haven‘t read! 7y

My broken foot has meant that my reading had increased no end. #sickday
This was an eye opening book, it was brave and honest, imparting knowledge about the realities of being black women in a way only Walker can. This was an eloquent discussion about race, class and gender that I fully adored. #feminism

OH MY LANTA. This is so good. She writes in such a subtle way about what it means to be a black woman in America. I have no direct knowledge of the experience personally, and I'm sure she doesn't speak for all, but it's opening my eyes further into what intersectionality means

This is why I love used books. I may just be creepy, but I wonder about the people who owned this before me. There are all kinds of notes and scribbles in here, and it's simply gorgeous.

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories, especially the one with the man who becomes crippled and the one about skiing. It took me a long time to finish reading it in it's entirety.
