Although my beloved Broadhurst's Booksellers is no more, browsing in another shop I found that they have an entry in this 1982 Guide to the Secondhand and Antiquarian bookshops of Great Britain, so I had to buy it. When I come to read it, I will undoubtedly be checking which are still open, and will be making appropriate entries on Library Thing. ⬇️

Bookwomble Kate O'Brien's English Diaries and Journals is a slim essay on the subject, a somewhat tanned cover, but some nice plates inside.
Lastly, an "unexpurgated" translation of The Decameron, privately published by the Navarre Society, with some similarly unexpurgated illustrations, ??️? No publishing date, but a previous owner, "Bultitude", has inscribed it "22nd January, 1943". ⬇️
1mo
Bookwomble At that date, its 42/- cover price would now be worth about £80, so the £6 I paid send a bargain, despite it showing signs of its age. 1mo

LeahBergen What a glorious photo! 1mo
bibliothecarivs Is this photo from the shop or from your home later? 1mo
Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs I wish I needed a bookcase ladder! 🤔 Actually, I do, but haven't the space for one, so I perch precariously on a stool for my top shelves! I took the picture in the tagged bookshop before heading for the till 😊 1mo
Bookwomble @kspenmoll Yes, I was pleased with this little group. I've been meaning to get a copy of the Decameron for 40-odd years, so not before time 😊 1mo
Bookwomble @LeahBergen It's atmospheric ? The new proprietor who took over when Mr Parkinson died a couple of years ago is starting to get a bit of his own stamp on the place, which is nice. Unfortunately, he does have a tendency to play his "background" music in the foreground, which can be rather unnerving when you're trying to quietly browse ?? 1mo
LeahBergen Eek! I feel your pain. 😬 1mo

Pickpick

I'm quietly devastated to learn that the bookshop I've been going to for 50 years permanently closed a few days ago, with all the staff being made redundant ☹️ It's strange to think that I'll never go in to browse along the shelves again and come away with my brown paper parcel of books. It's not really sunk in yet, but it's starting to feel like a bereavement 🖤

lil1inblue 💔 💔 💔 I feel ya! 6mo
The_Book_Ninja Aw damn I‘m sorry to hear that. I lost my favourite record shop a few years back. It really does leave a hole if it‘s somewhere you make meaningful purchases in. You get to know the staff and they get to know you. The high-street is getting obliterated 6mo

Out of this newly-arrived, as yet unshelved stack of #OldPenguins 🐧 at the bookshop, I liberated six!
@Leftcoastzen My attempt to reduce my book-buying rate is going as well as yours! 📚🤪📚

Ruthiella For a minute there I thought you had bought them ALL! 😅 8mo
Amor4Libros @Ruthiella I thought the same thing! 🤣 8mo

Bookwomble @Ruthiella @Amor4Libros As tempted as I might have been, I think neither my bank balance nor my shelves would take the strain! 8mo
Bookwomble @RowReads1 There's are just the new acquisitions they've made. To the left of the frame is a wall of shelves full of them! 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧 8mo
Bookwomble @merelybookish I did what I could! 😄 8mo
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen We're going to need a bigger van! 😅 8mo
Lesliereadsalot Have you been to Words on the Water in London? Am wondering if it‘s worth making time for on my London trip in October? 8mo
Bookwomble @Lesliereadsalot I haven't been to it, unfortunately. I used to live near London, but this wasn't there while I was. It looks good though. I see it's close to the British Library, London Zoo and Camden Market, all of which are worth visiting and easy to pop round to the Book Barge if you do 😊 8mo
Lesliereadsalot Thanks! 8mo

I was very saddened to learn today that Laurie Hardman, owner of my favourite bookstore, passed away a few days ago. Hugely knowledgeable and had a wry sense of humour. A great percentage of the books on my shelves passed through his hands.
When I ordered a Dave Brubeck biography from him, he recommended I listen to another great jazz pianist, so I'll put on a Bill Evans record this evening and raise a glass to Laurie 📚🎹🥃📚❤️

RaeLovesToRead Sorry to hear this. I believe I've visited this bookshop 💙 9mo

TheBookgeekFrau How sad 💔 But it's cool that so many of your books will keep his memory close. What a great legacy! 💕 9mo
Bookwomble @RaeLovesToRead @LeahBergen @quietlycuriouskate @TheBookgeekFrau It is sad, and rather a shock as his illness apparently progressed rapidly and he'd not even shared with his staff until a couple of months ago. They've set up a book of condolence in the shop, which I've written in, in order to give his family an indication of the fondness and respect in which he was held by local bibliophiles ❤️‍🩹 9mo
The_Book_Ninja That‘s very sad😥. Will the shop stay open? 9mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Yes, thankfully. Jo, the manager, said that Laurie was determined the shop he took over from Mr. Broadhurst would continue to trade, so he has made provisions in that regard. I'll be doing my best to contribute to its continuation, so my book buying ban (which is in tatters anyway!) may not last long. 9mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble Laurie‘s legacy continues 🙌🏼 9mo

@tpixie A shelfie of vintage Penguins, alas, not in my home, but at my favourite bookstore. Mainly the classic orange covers, but some of the other flavours, too ?
(To any community other than Litsy, having this photo on my phone from 18 months ago would surely mark me down as "atypical" ? It was a new display in a part of the shop previously closed off - I was agog! ?)
#OldPenguins ?

Leftcoastzen So cool! 13mo

tpixie @Bookwomble thanks for sharing!!! We Litten‘s love our ‘book porn ‘! It is amazing how looking at books can move you- lol like looking at babies, or baby animals!!! What a great collection! (edited) 13mo
PaperbackPirate 😍 My local bookstore has always had a last chance $2 wall which after a few minutes always felt overwhelming, but they recently organized it by color and now it‘s so much fun to go through! 🌈 13mo
Bookwomble @PaperbackPirate Shelving books by colour does look nice, though as a classification system it's less practical, unless an imprint publishes it's genres that way, which, obviously, Penguin did 🙂 I can imagine that the books on your local's discount shelves feel less chaotic and more soothing to look through now! 13mo
PaperbackPirate Yes it wasn‘t organized in any way before. I tried doing my own shelves by color for a bit but I could never find anything! 😂👵🏻 13mo
LeahBergen I just love the look of Penguin spines! 13mo
Bookwomble @LeahBergen There's something timeless and comforting about them 😊 13mo

Why is it the the room you're not allowed to go in is the one that looks most interesting? 🤔🧐

BarbaraBB Super intrigued by that room!! 2y
Bookwomble @BarbaraBB The facing wall had mainly military history, but it looked like there was a gallimaufry of titles scattered about. The store recently bought two huge collections of sci-fi and crime novels, so they're dusting off and opening up rooms they've had locked as long as I can remember, and I've been a customer for over 40 years! This one is an attic room 🕷️🕸️🕷️😊 2y
BarbaraBB You make it even more intriguing! 2y

jlhammar Oooh, that does look tempting! 2y
The_Book_Ninja Not a single 2nd hand book shop I haunted as a kid is still open🙁 2y
fredamans At least shut the bloody door so bibliophiles cannot see it.... geezus... why would you do us like that?! 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Ah, that's sad. Obviously, I can still visit Broadhurst's, which has been going since 1920, and sells new as well as secondhand and antiquarian books. There's another secondhand one, Parkinson's, which has been going since the early '80s at least, though sadly the original owner died recently. I thought it might close, but it has recently reopened and retained the name. 2y
Bookwomble @fredamans I don't think that doorway has a door in it at the moment 😀 To the right of the photo is another room with a firmly closed door (not that I tried it!), which was open last week and which I know to be full of books, too. I think they're both to be made accessible once the booksellers have finished reorganising 😁 2y

So, I was at a Knotty Ash charity shop and spotted a secondhand mattress which I thought would do for the spare room. A bit soiled, but I think the jam butty stains will come out. I didn't noticed the rip in the side until I got home, which was initially disappointing, but when I checked the damage I was pleasantly surprised to find someone had hidden money in there! What a lucky windfall 🤑 So, long story short, I bought some books today 😏📚

vivastory There has to be a story somewhere there...🤣 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Search for Ken Dodd and The Beatles on YouTube; Ken Dodd and Knotty Ash Jam Butty mines, and Ken Dodd and tax evasion, and you'll get some idea 😀 2y

To celebrate a temporary fractional increase in my salary, I've spent more than the sum I will receive on books 🤨
Twenty-First Century Tolkien is an analysis of the Prof's relevance in modern society; a couple of Sparks in a uniform edition I have one of already (tbr, of course); poetry by a Ghanaian writer for my reading challenge, and; a book about being a lonely sad sausage.

Bookwomble I hope my use of an Oxford comma in the above list won't result in a reprimand from our new Health Minister, as the woes of the NHS obviously has everything to do with grammar, and nothing to do with decades of ideological underfunding and stealth privatisation 🙄 2y
TrishB I have no words. 🤷‍♀️ Where are we headed. 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB Hell in a handcart? 🧐 Our only hope is that the Tories have cut the handcart service funding, and the route to Hell now runs a Sunday service all week. Standing room only once the handcart leaves Purgatory! 🔥👹🔥 2y

Leftcoastzen I need to move to the United Kingdom! Seeing a book in brown paper w/ string makes me weak in the knees.😀 5y
Bookwomble Ha, ha! I can think of no better reason to emigrate to our troubled little country ? If you do, my bookshop is tagged and I'd recommend a visit (it's "mine" insofar as I shop there, not, sadly, because I own it). 5y
Nute Are all book purchases wrapped like this for every customer? That touches my heart! 5y
Bookwomble @Nute They offer to wrap rather than bag, and I rarely refuse! Part of their training of new staff our learning to tie a parcel neatly and securely, but not too tight - it's a bookseller's rite of passage 😄 5y
