Beloved New York Times bestselling author Susanna Kearsley delivers a riveting novel that deftly intertwines the tales of two women, divided by centuries and forever changed by a clash of love and fate. For nearly three hundred years, the cryptic journal of Mary Dundas has kept its secrets. Now, amateur codebreaker Sara Thomas travels to Paris to crack the cipher.Jacobite exile Mary Dundas is filled with longing-for freedom, for adventure, for the family she lost. When fate opens the door, Mary dares to set her foot on a path far more surprising and dangerous than she ever could have dreamed. As Mary's gripping tale of rebellion and betrayal is revealed to her, Sara faces events in her own life that require letting go of everything she thought she knew-about herself, about loyalty, and especially about love. Though divided by centuries, these two women are united in a quest to discover the limits of trust and the unlikely coincidences of fate."A grand adventure...Susanna Kearsley just keeps getting better and better!" --LAUREN WILLIG, New York Times bestselling author

On vacation this week hanging out at my sister‘s house with my dad while she takes her kids camping and taking advantage of having a backyard to read in. Another engrossing read from Kearsley, two time periods with equally strong heroines- Sara who is working to crack the code and translate the diary Mary wrote during her adventures helping Jacobites. I skimmed some of the fairytales but otherwise this ranks amongst my favorites by the author.

kspenmoll Enjoy your time! Love that coffee mug! 2y

My favorite lines so far: "... even though he was a cat and therefore understood the rules of solitude, it was still disconcerting to glance up and find... [he] was watching me, the way cats did, with steady and unblinking eyes."

If there's any creature on this earth that understands the rules of solitude, it's the cat.

One of my local #indiebookstores This is The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, where I got to go to two book signings-both had two authors speaking. Once with Diana Gabaldon interviewing Susanna Kearsley and once with Lauren Willig and Deanna Raybourn. #aprilbookshowers

CoverToCoverGirl Coincidentally I met Diana today and had two books signed.. she's amazing! (edited) 8y

That embarrassing moment when you realize you missed a day of your own photo challenge. 😂 I'm a day late for #aprilamazingreads' fantastic character - and I've decided to avoid obvious candidates like Elizabeth Bennet or Hermione Granger or Anne Shirley, and go with Sara Thomas from A Desperate Fortune, because I love that she has Asperger's and is still an amazing heroine in this romance!

ValerieAndBooks Ooh, will have to stack this! 8y
howjessicareads It has some "Easter Eggs" to some of Kearsley's earlier titles - The Winter Sea and The Firebird @ValerieAndBooks; but you can def read it as a standalone! ? 8y

A book + a drink I love. Day 27 of #17booklove!! But, I know the Diet Coke habit is terrible for me, so that's partly why we are starting a Whole 30 tomorrow. Sniffle, I will miss you D.C.

RadicalReader @jess.how what's a whole 30? 8y

This one was really good. Just a slight step down from my #1 by Kearsley, The Firebird. No one is going back in time but code-breaker must crack the journal's cipher to find out more about this French Jacobite sympathizer. Both contemporary and past narratives are solid. And there are cameos from characters in other books. Tee hee!

On a Susanna Kearsley kick this weekend--just finished The Shadowy Horses and now on to A Desperate Fortune. You can definitely see the progression of her writing as her later books are much tighter and more polished.

Mehso-so

I've heard such great things about this author but I struggled with this book. I didn't get attached to the characters and almost bailed on it a couple of times. I finished it last night though. So, do I try again with this author? Which book do you suggest?

annahenke Winter Sea is my favorite by Kearsley! 8y
ellareads @annahenke I love the cover on that one. I'll keep it on my TBR list. Thanks! 8y

Friday Fun Post! One of my favorite autographed books! I loved meeting Susanna Kearsley. She is a wonderful person and lovely writer.

Bakingbookworm I met her in November and she was lovely, friendly and so down to earth. She autographed my favourite book of hers - The Winter Sea. I do so love meeting authors! I told my daughter that for me meeting fav authors is like her meeting Taylor Swift. She just nodded her head in understanding :) 8y
Karenlovesbooks @liberty Thanks for the idea to do this! Great fun! 8y
Karenlovesbooks @Bakingbookworm I also love meeting my favorite authors and Susanna Kearsley is definitely one if them! 8y
