Human Comedy (Rev) | William Saroyan

The place is Ithaca, in California's San Joaquin Valley. The time is World War II. The family is the Macauley's a mother, sister, and three brothers whose struggles and dreams reflect those of America's second-generation immigrants In particular, fourteen-year-old Homer, determined to become one of the fastest telegraph messengers in the West, finds himself caught between reality and illusion as delivering his messages of wartime death, love, and money brings him face-to-face with human emotion at its most naked and raw. Gentle, poignant and richly autobiographical, this delightful novel shows us the boy becoming the man in a world that even in the midst of war, appears sweeter, safer and more livable than out own."

Spent the day walking the beach and drinking beers and reading the tagged book and it was the most perfect Sunday. I love my new home so much!

Laughterhp Is that the view from your house? 5y
TheBookStacker @Laughterhp no I wish. I can walk to the beach from my place but I definitely can‘t afford to have a view like that. 5y
Laughterhp Haha, still a great view to walk buy and that‘s awesome you can walk to the beach from your place! Sounds awesome. 5y

My SIL does not have time to read these days- and is very easily distracted BUT misses books! I suggested audiobooks while driving and cooking/cleaning- but with so much on her plate it has to be very funny and keep her interest- any recommendations?

Crazeedi Bill bryson, its laugh out loud funny 5y
Butterfinger I loved Born a Crime. 5y
Cortg Trevor Noah's Born a Crime immediately comes to mind.

Cortg @butterfinger Like minds! 5y
julesG Should she like romance, I can recommend Julia Kent's Fluffy series and billionaire series. I laughed my way through IKEA listening to 5y
ImperfectCJ @julesG Listening to an audiobook in IKEA is brilliant! It would make getting lost in the maze of their displays much more pleasant! 5y
julesG @ImperfectCJ Definitely something to try. I often go shopping listening to audiobooks. 5y
Hooked_on_books Of course there‘s Born a Crime. But one I listened to lately and loved was Boomsday. Janeane Garafalo does the narration and is just awesome. 5y
Kenyazero The book itself is funny, and the audiobook enhances it! 5y
CandyCarrion Mogworld is super funny if she enjoys fantasy at all! :) 5y

An absolutely beautiful book, the story about a family in small town America during the 1940s. The simplicity of the story is what draws me to the author but the characters are relatable and likable.

A small but mighty story packed with lovely lines and moments. I especially loved this line from the author‘s dedication to his mother: “I have taken all this time to write a story especially for you because I have wanted it to be an especially good story, the very best I might be able to write, and now at last, a little pressed for time, I have tried.”

I absolutely adore this book, actually all of his books. He is so descriptive with his writing his characters are full of life and besides I live here in Fresno where so many of his stories take place. If you haven't read any thing by him please take the time to enjoy him.

“When you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive." -- Pulitzer Prize Winner William Saroyan, who died on this date in 1981. This photo of me and the man was taken by Aaron Spagnolo in Yerevan in 2012.

Bambolina_81 That's a great photo 😊 8y

What my children appear to be on the surface is no matter to me. I am fooled neither by gracious manners nor by bad manners. I am interested in what is truly beneath each kind of manners…I want my children to be people– each one separate– each one special– each one a pleasant and exciting variation of all the others

You must remember always to give, of everything you have. You must give foolishly even. You must be extravagant. You must give to all who come into your life. Then nothing and no one shall have power to cheat you of anything, for if you give to a thief, he cannot steal from you, and he himself is then no longer a thief. And the more you give, the more you will have to give.

This book is wonderful story called The Human Comedy, all the characters are wonderful but Homer and Ulysses in particular, is based on Saroyan's life, living fatherless with his siblings and his mother. It is based on the real town of Fresno, California, Saroyan's home-town.

I live in the San Joaquin Valley and Mr. Saroyan grew up here I've lived on a couple of the streets mentioned in his books and I think I like these stories because they are about regular people, growing up, being kids, family problems just regular stuff.
