A love triangle forms in 1960‘s China between a doctor, his (modern, educated) city girlfriend and his (simple, kindly) country wife. I enjoyed the way this novel transported me to another place and time while the romance/drama was symbolic of the changes that modernization brought to China. The writing was excellent.
Married man & single woman fall in love. Or so they think. So begins a period of waiting. Waiting for divorce, waiting to be deflowered, waiting to avoid spinsterhood, waiting & waiting. In the West, the common advice is to follow your dreams. This novel suggests that we should take care not to be drowned by them. 1. My nephew was born two days before lockdown so I still haven't met him. It's hard.
2. Three Women by Lisa Taddeo
3. I decided to finish work(ing from home) early today and give the rest of the day to myself.

These empty bookshelves are breaking my heart. I can't wait for my books to get here! (Along with all our other possessions, but mostly I just want the books.)
@TK421 You will not be ended like this guy by waiting your #Staycationintimrswap boxes🎁🎁☺️They are supposed to arrive on Wednesday only 2 days. There was a problem with zip code received in email but they fixed it and it should be no problem. I will send you the tracking # by email. Let me know when you received them because I will wait to open my box when you receive yours if it arrives late which I don't think so. 2 more days🤗 @Chrissyreadit
I read this book many (18 or so) years ago...it is about a man caught between living with the traditional #chinagirl in his arranges marriage and the modern woman he is in love with. I‘ve read and enjoyed several books by this author. #wanderingjune @BarbaraBB
Waiting for @WanderingBookaneer in her classroom so we can go home and read! #shelfie #bookshelflove

She said she'd come at four, has she forgotten?
I've thought of nothing else this endless day.
Perhaps she is regretting that moment when she kissed me.
That moment of surrender...
Or was it all a sport for her amusement?
A heartless little game some women play?
How can she have forgotten?
She made me feel she meant it.
How can she not remember?
Waiting, all my life, a kind of waiting.
Never sure why I was waiting.
I find it really hard to read in a waiting room with people talking and the tv on. Does this happen to anyone else?!
Hard limit: rape scene written by a male author from a female POV. Hell to the no.
My daughter is getting her laptop set up at college orientation and this is the Parent Waiting Area. This might be the first time during the 2 day Summer Welcome session that I don't mind waiting.
Actual live footage of me waiting for my #bottleandbookswap bottle to arrive so I can ship it to my partner
I love the language. It is lush with descriptions that read more like poetry. Jin has a talent for the small moment & possesses a gift for characters‘ inner dialogue & reflection. The story itself is not much of a story. The reader, like characters, spends the book waiting for *something* to happen. That feeling isn‘t satisfied. Includes a graphic depiction of rape, but is well-handled. Overall, a decent book about the mundane nature of love.
The language in Waiting is so lush & beautiful...it encourages a slow reading pace, and a feeling of anticipation—like waiting for something long hoped for.
When you‘re waiting for your parcel and your swap buddy is MIA...
Keeping me company.

I wanted to like this, the start was promising but the writing, plot and believability fell apart from there.
I am so annoyed. I ordered a Kindle Fire 7 on Friday. My brother in law ordered his on Saturday. He has his and I don't have mine. Worse, the tracking only shows that mine left some shipping facility in Jacksonville on Saturday. Nothing after that. WHERE'S MY PRECIOUSSSSS. I WANTS IT.
#SecretSantaAutumnSurpriseBox sent off - as a registered large letter, because that's faster (said the guy behind the counter). #HalloweenGoesPostal #FallBookExchange should arrive at it's UK destination within the next week.
A box with diverse German marzipan is on it's way to Norway.
I have 90min between two appointments. Would rather spend them on my sofa cuddling my cat but going home and coming back doesn't make sense timewise.
#waiting theme for #October: ...Waiting. I‘ve purchased this book several times in life, and never gotten around to reading it. Now I‘m motivated to try again. #uncannyoctober #litsyreads @RealLifeReading

#BookMail from yesterday 📬🎉
I've been meaning to get my hands on this book for a while now and finally did! It's about adultery—the main character returns to his home to end his marriage every summer from the Chinese Army but can't bring himself to do it, postponing the engagement he's kept with a nurse in the city for 18 years. Sounds fascinating.

Got me entirely hooked! So so angry with Lin Kong though. What an a*se.
Life is such a precarious thing. Today we're alive, tomorrow we may be gone. What's the point in trying so hard to live like a human being every day?

I just did a book purge from my "to be read" bookshelf. 26 books are going to find a loving new home!
Here's a #greatfirstlines from Ha Jin's beautiful #awardwinning novel: "Every summer Lin Kong returned to Goose Village to divorce his wife, Shuyu."
A very small part of my #bookhaul from this weekend's clearance book sale. I went with a friend, shared a basket, got separated, and she had to leave early. She's now holding my books hostage.
